Nancy, The people I'm researching are Heinrich Bartels (may have been Americanized to a different first name..Henry or Fred) he was born 1856 Germany. He and wife Anna Angerstein came over to New Castle DE probably about 1885. There is a Fred Bartell(?) in the index at 1217.34 Vol. 1 pg 244, Declaration of Intent, 1st papers. Also, Gottlieb Lokan (sometimes spelled Lokau) whose papers are at 1217.34 Vol. 6, pg 2, Declaration of Intent, 1st papers. Also, Albert Angerstein, 1896 Germany to New Castle: 1217.41 Vol. 4, pg260 Final Papers, 2nd papers. These are my grandchildren's ancestors...their mother's ancestors. Any help appreciated. Martha
Dear Martha and list, I thought maybe I should mention that if the census index found at the DE archives is the same one that is found on ancestry.com, then you may have family on the census that did not make it to the index list. I started searching for my Still family in Delaware before the index was published (couldn't wait! -- thank goodness the state is small!). I found quite a few Stills, most of whom were related to me. However, when I compared the entries I found by going from page to page in the census with the index list, fully two thirds of the Still families I found did not appear on the list. Ergo, the old advice. . . If you are pretty certain that someone was in a certain area and they don't appear on an index, do the search the old fashioned way -- page by page. And, then, of course, if you don't find your targets where you thought they were or elsewhere, remember that the census takers were not always perfect (who is?) and go elsewhere for confirmation -- like church records or land records, etc. Karen Minneapolis In a message dated 10/24/02 3:45:50 PM Central Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: > > Is there someone living in Dover or who is going to Dover to > the Public Archives who would copy several Naturalization > records, for a fee, of course. If you had a subscription to ancestry.com, you would have access to the 1930 DE index as well as the census images. I have found it most worthwhile to be a subscriber to a couple of the genealogy sites. That way I can do research in my nightgown if I wish. I do not mean to push any particular genealogy site, just saying that it is worthwhile for me, especially as I live in Florida. Hi One & All, Yesterday, 22 Oct 2002, Ginny DeNENNO & I went to St. Martin's Cemetery to recover metal gravemarkers, which had been removed from graves & were thrown behind a large tree over the years. I asked & received permission from Bruce DORBIAN, Marcus Hook borough manager & director of the Marcus Hook Community Development Corporation. I, also, asked for the rod iron gate from the PHILLIPS burial plot. This gate was torn from the fence & on the ground when I found it 2 years ago. Rev. David RIBEIRO, pastor of the congregation, now in "Old St. Martin's Church" was kind enough to store the gate for us. These items were given to the "new" museum of the Delaware County Historical Society. The metal gravemarkers could not be replaced on the graves because of their condition & no one knows were the graves are today. The following is a list of the items retrieved & some new info that is not in either of the surveys done, in the past, on St. Martin's Cemetery: Name: Date & other info, Foundry named on the back if any: of the metal gravemarkers: 1. I have three different LDS birth and death dates for my gggrandfather, including the misspelling of his wife's name. These all have names attached I have tried to connect to and have corrected.I know the mistakes since I personally have the Bible, visit the cem., and city records, taxes, census, etc. I have tried three times to correct another group from Family TREE, that claims my grandfather is the son to his brother, and his brother for real had no children yet is credited with my grandfather and three other births. Unless you see the actual record and see the documentation take it with a grain of salt untill you do. Can anyone tell me if we should rely 100% on the microfilm that the LDS and FHC have on file regarding births, deaths, deeds, probate, wills, marriages, etc. I'm asking because one of the family members who is helping with research got alot of films from the LDS and FHC and found nothing to what she was looking for. I was wondering if alot of the historical societies, genealogy societies in each county and/or state would have alot of books that haven't been microfilmed. Thanks for any help. Teri Tighe

Good morning list, In the past, I mentioned the SOUTHERY-SUDDERY Log House Dr. Mead SHAFFER just recently rebuilt on his property in Bethel Twp., PA. Last month, I asked Doc if he would consider hosting a reunion for the descendants of Robert SOUTHERY-SUDDERY & yesterday he gave me the go ahead. He hopes to have the reunion this spring, 2003. If anyone is a descendant of Robert SOUTHERY-SUDDERY & is interested in attending this reunion please e-mail me. I'm compiling an e-mail list. First come, first served, just incase we have to many responses. At some point I'm sure there will be a cut off, sorry to say. I would be very interested in knowing your direct lineage to Robert SOUTHERY-SUDDERY. For those of you who are not familiar with Doc SHAFFER's Saturday night dinner parties -- they are "the talk of the town." It is consider an "historic moment" to be invited to Doc SHAFFER's House -- a true walk back in time. The aroma of baking bread, in 18th century ovens, the smells of something roasting on an open fireplaces. Gee, is this Christmas Eve 200 years ago???? I'm sure the SOUTHERY-SUDDERY Reunion will be something you will treasure, in your memory, for a long time to come. :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCHS)
Hi List: Searching for a child born around 1916-'17 or '18 in Hartford, CT. to CLARA GUSBERG (who married Samuel Edward Cole in Hartford, CT. in Aug. 1917) I believe the child (gender unknown) was placed up for adoption. When I requested information on this even in CT. I was told the information could not be released because of CT. Statute 7-51 (which I am not familiar with). Anyone with information on this birth please contact me directly. Thank you. [email protected]
Am researching Henry Benn who was in Appoqunimink Hundred in late 1700s before moving to Central Pennsylvania. Several Benn families in Appoqunimink but have not been able to tied any together. Henry is alleged to have married a Huff. Anyone researching either family?
Hi List: Seeking info of my mom's first husband: SAMUEL EDWARD COLE born in Cherry Hill (Cecil Co. ) Maryland in 1885 to James & Mary (nee Drennen) Cole. I know he married my mom CLARA GUSBERG in Aug. 1917 in Hartford CT., where they lived for a short while then they moved to Newark, DE. by June 1918 when Samuel had to register for the draft of WW-1. By 1919 the Coles were no longer living together. He had worked for the Curtis Paper Mill; was an officer in the Knights of Pythias; the Masons, a volunteer fireman in Newark and a member of the Methodist church. He died in 1943 and is buried in The Methodist Church Cemetery in Cherry Hill, MD. I would pay for a photo of him. [email protected]
Hi List: Can anyone twll my where I can get pictures of former employees of the Curtis Brothers Paper Mill? Someone told me the town of Newark, DE. may have all the old records. [email protected]
Hi lists, I just received a copy of a death certificate, today, from: New York Department of Records & Information Services Office of the Commissioner 31 Chambers Street, Suite 305 New York, NY I also received a letter, with it, stating they have photographic records of every house & building from circa 1939-1941 in New York City. They go on to say, this would be a very unique gift for any one interested in genealogy - family history. If you have the exact street address and/or block & lot number for the building you will be able to order a photo. $25.00 for 8" x 10" $35.00 for 11" x 14" plus postage (high-quality black & white prints) I think this is really great that you can obtain a photo of the family home or business. If NYC is doing this you may want to look for other cities & towns across the US, who may have the same service available. :) To those of you who are interested in New York City & this service: Phone: (212) 788-8580 Website: www.nyc.gov/html/doris Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)

Good morning, I want to thank everyone who made phone calls, wrote letters & sent e-mails to the Delaware County Court House (DCCH), in regard to research records -- making it known that the public was not pleased with the few genealogy records made available to us! I have seen some improvement :) Please read on! About a month ago, I asked about Naturalization Records & was lead to an area where the following Naturalization Books are stored in the Office of Judicial Support, (near the Passport Office). These records have never been available to the public before. Here is information regarding the Naturalization Books: Volume: Date: #1 27 Feb 1860 - 27 Sep 1876 #2 27 Sep 1876 - 20 Oct 1883 #3 25 Oct 1883 - 23 Sep 1886 #4 23 Sep 1886 - 27 Sep 1888 #5 27 Sep 1888 - 2 Oct 1890 #6 2 Oct 1890 - 3 Oct 1892 #7 3 Oct 1892 - 7 Oct 1892 #8 7 Oct 1892 - 30 Dec 1892 #9 30 Dec 1892 - 13 Mar 1893 #10 13 Mar 1893 - 17 Sep 1894 #11 17 Sep 1894 - 2 Oct 1896 #12 2 Oct 1896 - 22 Sep 1897 #13 22 Sep 1897 - 28 Sep 1899 #14 28 Sep 1899? - 23 Mar 1903? (missing)* #15 23 Mar 1903 - 23 Sep 1906 *Rumor has it -- this Naturalization Book may be at the Neumann College Library -- sent there by mistake when the Tax Dockets were sent to Neumann, a few years ago. The information in these books, gives the name & date the immigrant became a citizen, the country they immigrated from & the name(s) of the witness(es). Little else is available in these documents. Now, for the Petition Books for Naturalization -- these books are just fabulous for genealogy information! :) They contain the following documents: 1. Certificate of Arrival 2. Declaration of Intention 3. Petition of Naturalization In the above named documents you have: Photo IDs; names; dates of birth; place of birth, (town, city, county, region); date of immigration; wife's name (if married) & some times info on her; occupation; etc. I only had the pleasure of viewing Volume #39 -- the rest are in storage & will be brought to the court house soon -- so I was told. Very soon, I hope, because these books are invaluable. This could not have been accomplished without your support. Many, many thanks! Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) P.S. Please pass this info on to others, who are interested in the records at the Delaware County Court House.
Good morning lists, I sent this out yesterday but I never received a copy -- I don't know if anyone else did -- so I'm posting again. Very sorry if you receive this more than once. Hi list, I'm posting this query for a friend -- please respond to: [email protected] -- not to me. :) Thank you! Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) Hi: My name is Helen FALLS -- my grandfather was Alonzo B. ATKINS, his father was Josiah Alonzo Bayard ATKINS, b. 1846, his father was James Alonza Bayard ATKINS b. 1816. I have been unable to find the father & mother of James A. Bayard ATKINS. I think that he may have married a daughter of the James A. BAYARD family who were in Wilmington, Del. and were congressmen for Delaware. I visited Chester Co. Historical Society, DCHS, Swarthmore College, Archives in West Chester, and found a lot of biographical information but not the children of the BAYARD, I am looking for. Since they were so prominent in Delaware I feel that it would not to hard to find out whether my theory is correct. I was in Pa. but discovered this information on Friday, but had to return here to Florida on the 22nd of Sep. Is there anyone that would have any info or suggestion that would be of help to me Thank you, Helen R. Falls
