    3. Dori, You raise some excellent questions! I do know a living person (in Georgia) can get inaccuracies to a birth certificate changed on something called, I think, an amended certificate. However, for one that was done many years ago, the best thing might be to send some documentation to the LDS folks and request that changes be made to their records. Also, you could post the information on the internet at Rootsweb World Connect or other such sites. It is frustrating to see wrong information "out there". I have something similar with a Revolutionary ancestor to whom extra children were attached. It is very difficult to get people to change their records I have found. Many are more interested in the quantity of their compiled records and not the quality of the research. Keep trying! Others may have better suggestions. 2. But what do you do when you have researched the documents and the documents are wrong?? A close friend for whom I have tried to establish a family tree has pointed out the errors as follows: My friend is one of 10 children born to Mr. X and Mrs. X ---- when the birth certificates were written five indicated that Mrs X was born in Illinois, five indicated that she was born in Kansas. (It WAS Kansas.) Mrs. X death certificate indicated that she was the daughter of Mr. CHARLES something (of Illinois). She was the daughter of Mr. ANDREW (something) of Illinois. (I have the census copy). The information given to the doctor writing up the birth/death certificates was given by someone who knew absolutely nothing positive about Mrs. origins, but this all appears in the IGI files. WE know the difference, but when generations down the line may try to establish the tree, they will have a very hard time trying to figure it out. What to do when the birth certificates of 70-90 years ago are wrong?? DORI

    3. Cathy and others, About ten years ago, a rerpresentative of the LDS Church spoke to our genealogy group in Brunswick, Georgia, and said that about 25% of their genealogy information was INCORRECT. This is because they take the family information sent to them and simply do not have the manpower or time to check it out. In many cases conflicting information is received. However, she said that each year they are improving the accuracy of their data, SO by now it should be somewhat more reliable. My advice is to document everything and question everything. 3. I haven't seen a reply to this question and would like to tell you of my experience. I spent 15 days at the LDS library in SLC and had a wonderful time. They have a large group of volunteers busy transcribing church records, etc onto the IGI. Those records are as good as the original books. However, there are problems with other sources, especially the very early ones. One of the most striking example of that is the birthdate for one of my ancestors. There were six birthdates given, each from a different person who had sent in his or her pedigree chart. No primary source was given. Also in the early days the Mormons who filed their own family histories did not have primary sources for all their information and sometimes relied on family memory or tradition. The batch code number tells the source of the information and you can get that from the library by sending them the code #. There are certain code #s which are never primary sources but I don't remember them anymore. I am sure a phone call to SLC library would get you someone who would give you the source. You want a primary one - church, courthouse, family Bible, etc. Cathy ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, October 21, 2002 11:38 AM Subject: Books and Records - Late 1700's to 1840 > I'm emailing a few of my related mailing lists in hopes of getting specific answers back from those lists. > > Can anyone tell me if we should rely 100% on the microfilm that the LDS and FHC have on file regarding births, deaths, deeds, probate, wills, marriages, etc. > > I'm asking because one of the family members who is helping with research got alot of films from the LDS and FHC and found nothing to what she was looking for. 2. Hi list(s), I received a query in regard to saving the WELDIN - ALLMOND Family House at 302 Philadelphia Pike in Wilmington, at the corner of Lore Avenue, Marsh Road and Philadelphia Pike. Please read the following & if anyone can help in any way possible please contact: Nancy Dunlap [email protected] QUERY: <<I live next door to the house that George and Elizabeth (Allmond) Weldin lived in, in Delaware. Currently a 7-Eleven wants to buy the property and put in a convenience store and gas pumps. The neighborhood is trying to save the historic house. I am working on research about the families that lived there. I saw your name when searching a genealogical web site and was hoping you might have further information about them. Please write back. You can see our website at www.geocities.com/friendsofpennyhill . Thank you in advance, Nancy Dunlap>> From: [email protected] Date: 2002/11/01 Fri AM 09:24:18 EST To: [email protected] Subject: Re: weldin allmond Hi Nancy, What kind of info are you looking for on the WELDIN-ALLMOND family? You didn't give any dates on them & you did not mention the place in Delaware they are from. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) RESPONSE: <<The property in question is at 302 Philadelphia Pike in Wilmington, at the corner of Lore Avenue, Marsh Road and Philadelphia Pike. It looks, from deed records, the property was originally in the hands of the Allmonds, and deeded to Elizabeth Allmond when she married George Weldin around 1790. The house appears to have been built about that time. The Weldins appear to have kept it in the family until sometime around the late 1800's . At some point, the state of Delaware owned it, I think, but then Benjamin Veasey was the owner until the 1920's. In order to save the house, I need to know more about the owners so that we can push the "historical significance" aspect. Land Use people indicated to us that just because something is old, they don't consider it valuable. Seven Eleven sure doesn't care. They said, at a recent meeting, that they don't even believe it is older than this century. You can just look at it and see otherwise. Nancy Dunlap Please send e-mail to 7-Eleven to register your opposition to the demolition of the Weldin House. [email protected]>> Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) P.S. Please pass this onto others who might be interested.

    1. Re: Ancestry.com Online Census Images (page numbers)
    2. James Bowling
    3. Martha, and to others using the Ancestry.com Online Census Images...unfortunately, page numbers listed rarely match up to the actual page in the census. I usually try to check the actual page number first, if it is listed, then look for other page numbers on the individual census images. Usually you can find a page number in the upper right corner or left corner of the image. Some images also have two page numbers (left and right corner) that don't usually match each other. The ones in the upper left tend to be handwritten numbers, and many times match the page numbers for Ancestry.com (but not always). The ones in the upper right tend to be "stamped" on numbers that would be more like page numbers noted in a book, and many times don't match Ancestry.com's reference number. Think about the fact that the census was usually written in a book form, so you sometimes "skip" pages (i.e. page 125 will actually be two images, and then you will find 126). I'd also suggest reading the FAQ about searching page numbers on Ancestry.com, as it is helpful. I find it hard to locate things easily, but once you start doing it over and over, it gets easier. Hope this helps some!!
