Surname indecipherable. #55 surname could be Lirey (possibly for Leary) or Liney or Livey. #57 surname probably McCue. #59-60 surname possibly spelled McConossy or McConomy or McConorry or McCononery. #67 age could be 38. #75 surname could be Parke or Parker. #80 age possibly 16 or 14. #83 age possibly 26. #84 surname could be Warnock or Warnoak. #85 surname could be O'Brien or Brien. #92 surname possibly Withero. #98 occupation possibly servant, but very light film. #104 middle initial could be J or A. #105 surname possibly Cronan, alternative spelling for Cronin. #106 surname could be McGonegal or McDonegal. #107 first name possibly Pat. #109 age could be 28 or 23. #133 surname could be McMonagh or McMonagle. #136 surname same as #59-60. #139-140 though these surnames were written differently, it is possible that they were meant to be the same name. #147 surname looks like Bonar or Bonas; age could be 76 or 16. #153 surname could possibly be Bell or Bela; last letter is obscured. #154 surname could be Maxwell or Maswell. #163-166 surname same as #133. #165 this could be the child who died. Though the final column was cut off on copy, part of the column has the child's name written in it, which on other lists is often the beginning of a note giving the death information. This was not found for any of the other passengers, so it is likely that this child did not survive the voyage. #184 surname could be spelled Stans or Stairs perhaps. #189 age could be 7 or 9. #201 age could be 16. #203 age possibly 20. #205 age could be 15 or 16. #206-207 surname could be Faiel or Friel or Farel perhaps. #208 name could be John M. Alen or McAlen, but not at all certain of surname; very light. #209-210 surname possibly McNutt or McNabb. #213 gender written male, and Isabella had been written over another first name, possibly James.

In several areas, it seems as if the origin changes about halfway through what may be a group emigrating together. #20-27 town spelled as found, and with w for last few. #31-39 town spelled as found, but probably Newtown Limavady. * This was probably near the date of departure from Ireland. It probably arrived during the summer months. These lists were found by Fothergill, while searching through the British Archives, in British Museum Manuscript Add. 35932. It was subsequently published in "Ship Passenger Lists" by Carl Boyer 3rd, in 1977, Newhall, California. Library of Congress Catalogue number: 76-37355.

Hi Lists, I received the following from another list & asked for permission to post it. I found this very interesting & thought it might be helpful in regard to money being used in this time period: ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, November 24, 2002 8:15 PM Subject: Re: [PACHESTE] SCHEME Of A LOTTERY, 1762 In a message dated 11/23/2002 2:36:03 PM Central Standard Time, [email protected] writes: January 14, 1762 The Pennsylvania Gazette > > SCHEME Of A LOTTERY, for raising Fifteen Hundred Dollars, to help to > > finish the New Presbyterian Church, now erecting in the Forks of > > Brandywine. > Wait one. > > I guess I don't understand a 1762 posting that refers to money as dollars'. > > I thought the currency of the realm at that time was pounds ... and shillings ... and pence, etc. > > Can someone explain this ?? > > DICK FOLKERTH > Dallas, Texas Allow me to venture a guess as to what the term dollars might have meant in 1762. As you know, George III was slipping in and out of insanity, and would not allow any mintage of royal coinage. I don't know the exact timing of this, but suffice to say his attitude and the rapid expansion of commerce in the colonies caused a lasting and inconvenient shortage of coinage, even down to farthings, pence, and shillings. One of the more popular coins used was the Spanish Eight Reales, often called a dollar. Eventually, the Bank of England bought a number of these coins from Spain, and stamped a tiny royal bust on the neck of the Spanish king. This lead to the creation of a rhyme: The bank to make its Spanish dollars pass Stamped the head of a fool on the neck of an ass. Notwithstanding the legitimization of the Dollar many of them were used in their "native" state. Actually the Spanish Eight Reales piece was legal tender in the United States until (I think) 1856. Incidentally, the dollar, being of good silver, was cut into "bits"...eight of them, thus "two bits", a quarter, "four bits", half a dollar, if you are old enough to remember the use of those terms. One bit was a "picayune", an eighth of a dollar, and one supposes, the price of a pack of those New Orleans cigarettes called "Picayune"; strong enough to curl your hair! Or perhaps the entire Scheme of a Lottery was a fake! Phil Andrew Lache pas la patat

Dear Friends: For many years I have been trying to locate a photo of my mother's first husband who was born in Cherry Hill (Cecil Co., MD.) in 1885 to James & Mary (nee Drennen) Cole. I am searching for: SAMUEL EDWARD COLE (or Edward Samuel) of Newark, DE. He was a member of the Concordia Hill Lodge No. 67, F. and A. M. of Philadelphia in the early and mid 1900s and an officer in the Knights of Pythias. A member of the Methodist Church of Newark and a volunteer fireman. He died in Newark, DE. in June 1940 while living with his sister Ida (Mrs.Wm. ) Morrison of 28 Choate St., Newark. Samuel Cole was a well-known employee of the Curtis Paper Mill and he and my mother, Clara, lived at 48 No. Chapel St., in 1918. Any help or suggestions you can offer would be much appreciated and a reward paid. Thank you. Peter B. McCue 14 Orchard Place East East Hanover, N.J. 07936-1555 [email protected]

Good Evening List, I am hoping someone can help me with an address and / or for the Grand Union Hotel in Wilmington in 1900. I have been trying to located a census record for Joseph W. GATLEY who was living there at the time. He is not listed in the indexes (that I can find) probably because his children are over the age of ten and he may be a widower. Thanks for you help. In a message dated 11/12/02 1:01:27 AM EST, [email protected] writes: > [email protected] Kathy, I use the Wilmington City Directories too. The nice thing about them is they were published yearly. So if Henrietta was widowed in 1900 you can work backwards to find when George was last listed to narrow down his date of death. Just one thing to think about........if Henrietta was widowed in 1900, then that information was no doubt compiled in 1899 so she could have been widowed sooner depending on his date of death and date of publication. My gr grandmother Annie E. Davis MAXWELL was not on the 1900 Census with her family but was still on the 1900 Wilmington City Directories. She gave birth in 1899 so she may have died in child birth, after child birth or any time before the census was taken. Im currently searching for her death certiicate to deteremine that amoung other things. Also, sometimes if you are at the Archives in Dover and can narrow down a date to within a couple of years....the staff is great there and may be able to assist you in finding what you need. The Archives helped me find another gr grandmother's death certificate.Dora Elizabeth Hitchens Cooper BRITTINGHAM. They helped with the reference numbers and microfilm roll numbers and I got it. SHe was a big block wall. The only name I knew of was BRITTINGHAM...That certificate gave me. Her DOB, DOD, Cause of death, where death occurred, husband (which I knew), date of last residence, Father, Mother including maiden name(Hitchens) and that her body was transported by train to Delmar for burial (didnt say Delmar, DE or MD or what cemetary....... but Delmar isnt that big). This solved quite a mystery as to why she was not buried with her husband and when she died. Throughout my researches, I discovered she was married before my gr grandfather, SKS's gave me information on both her marriages(1. Joseph W. COOPER, 2. George T. BRITTINGHAM) from Ruth Drydens books. So it is possible she was buried with the first husband or in some family graveyard. One day I will go there and search it out. I was so amazed that a death certificate (1924) would have so much information, including that Dora lost 4 years between marriages. lol She was four years younger on her marriage to George and death certificate than stated on her marriage to Joseph and the census from 1880. Seems many women dropped years off to marry younger men,,,,since it was not the fashion for them women to be older. It appears to have happened on almost every side of my family and the in laws sides too. I hope this helps for you to narrow down your dates. I dont know where you live, but (I havent been there yet) I have been told the Wilmington Public Library has quite a collection too. There are also Obits there and at the Morris Library At the University of Delaware. Obits are great because they sometimes give siblings and parents names too and if you can narrow down the date of death it should be easy to locate. Also drop the "e" off of Clarke if you havent already. I have a Demmey family Ive been searching, as simple as it sounds, I never thought to drop the last "e". Someone else just found my (another) gr grandmother Elizabeth Demmey on SSDI, it was Elizabeth Demmy. Im not sure which spelling was really correct, originally, but Demmey is what was transcribe from someone else's hand writting. Im sure now when I go back to the archives, I will find her in the census records under the "new" spelling. It was so obvious, yet , I just missed it! I hope this helps and wish you the best in your searches. If I can help in anyway, let me know. Take care. Vickie
Hi Cathy, Thank you for your thoughts. I will try the Historical Society. A few years ago, a kind person took pictures of Henrietta's stone for me so I was lucky there. Hopefully I will find something to help with my research. Thanks so much for your suggestions. Kathy
Did you try the DE Hist Soc? They have some records. I visited Mt Salem years ago on a cold rainy day. I climbed up to the church and found the minister. But he said it wasn't attached to his church and he had no records. It was a most miserable day for me. I know of ancestors buried there but was unable to find their stones that day. Hello, I was wondering if anyone has received cemetery records from Mt Salem Cemetery? I did inquire a few years ago and was told there is a $25 charge to receive any records. Before I order them, I'd like to know if they do respond. I have very little information on my gr gr grandmother Henrietta SQUIBB CLARKE who is buried there but don't want to waste money if they are not reponsive. Henrietta has a stone but no other known family member there does. I am also wondering if Mt Salem was affiliated with any particular church in Wilmington. Henrietta was living with a HOFFECHER family at age 8 in 1860, I have several records from my gr grandfathe (b. 1878) and one of his brothers (b. 1874) which state Henrietta was married to George Washington CLARKE. I can't find them in 1870 or 1880. She is listed as the widow of George W. in the 1890 Wilmington City Directory. She died in February 1900, I have her death certificate. I have no information on George other than his name. Thanks for any suggestions. Kathy Karn
