Debbie I have the following information and was wondering if you had anything in any of your records: 1860 Ellingsworth Noble C. Sussex County DE 016 Broadkiln Hundreds DE 1860 Slave Schedule DE5551159 Of course, I realize this is different from what you have been posting, but I have not had any luck in finding much else. Any leads greatly appreciated. I inherited the cookbook from my mother, Rachel Rotthouse Webster, who got it from her mother, Mabel Garfield Talley Rotthouse. Mabel and her husband, Harry R. Rotthouse, my grandfather, are buried in the cemetery at Grace P.E. Church, just north of Talleyville. Thought someone would be interested in how businesses advertized, as well as the ones who helped pay for the cookbook. None of my family, that I can tell so far, were advertizers, but grandmother did have at least one receipe in the book. I grew up at Highland Orchards on Foulk Road. The farmhouse and barn are still there. Penny Webster Brown now in Florida

This is on the Bonds of Marriage from another (North Carolina)State's laws. It also discusses Banns of the Marriage and Surety/Sureties with an example of a posting at the bottom. North Carolina Marriage Bonds Very interesting reading. It explains it well. Take care. Vickie
What are Marriage Bonds? - Rockbridge Marriag... I found this explaination on a Google Search. It is probably the same as in most states except amounts varied. I have some with $200. Bonds. They are signed by prospective groom but also by a son in one case (his dad was a widow) and another by a best friend (at least we think so).I have included the site incase someone wants to check it out. Couldnt find an explaination using Delaware. But I have also been given the same explaination above when I question it at the Archives in Dover. Hope this helps. Take care. Vickie What are the Marriage Bonds? Marriage bonds were issued by the courts. A bridegroom signed a bond for a specified amount, usually 50 pounds, later $150.00. He and his surety promised the Governor of Virginia he and the bride were legally entitled to marry the marriage would then be preformed. They were sort of a legal promissory note to ensure the marriage was legal. If the bride or groom were already married, not of legal age, without proper consent, or some other other cause, the marriage would not be legal. The bond ensured that it was. If there was legal cause to void the marriage, the groom and his surety would have to pay the amount of the bond to the state. In Virginia, 21 was the legal age. In cases where the bride or groom were under age 21, their parents or guardians had to give consent for them to marry. Many of the marriage bonds within carry consents of the parents. These consents are generally signed by witnesses or relatives. Often affidavits accompany the marriage bonds. These affidavits are often by a neighbor, a relative, or some other party well acquainted with the bride or groom and serve as proof of their age. Each and every name in these marriage bonds, consents and affidavits are clues. Use them wisely and relationships can often be determined. Also note that original signatures are on these documents. You may be able to solve the problem of "names's the same" with these documents. Perhaps there were two John Smiths in the area at the same time. Using the original signatures of the fellows may help to sort them.
