How about >Thomas's son, Samuel 1706 - 1764. What was his occupation? Most of what we know about these early families comes from the wills that they left. Those wills that have been found and contributed to the documents that we have on-line can be found at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~javan/desloges/records.htm#WILLS If you read through those wills, you will see that both the Thomas and Samuel you inquire about were plantation owners. Most of the early settlers who were plantation owners were wealthy and had a sizable estate to leave to their heirs. Those that were not wealthy may not have left wills, so one could assume that a subsistence farmer who struggled to keep his family fed probably did not leave a will. Accordingly, it would be very difficult to specify a time when all of the DeLoach men were no longer plantation owners but were farmers. We know that in some branches of the family, such as in Northampton County, NC, they were still operating plantations at least through the Civil War. Other branches, such as those in Edgecombe County, NC, were farmers in 1790. >I have lost my bookmark to your web site.
