I recently made a trip to Virginia to search for records for the early DeLoach families, with an objective of identifying the land that passed from Rowland Griffen/Griffeth to Michael and Jane DeLoach. The first stop was the Library of Virginia in Richmond. There, I learned that this property was originally granted to a Christopher Lewis on 26 July 1652 for the transportation of 15 persons. In other words, Christopher Lewis obtained the 50 acres of Headright land that was granted to each new settler of the Virginia Colony in exchange for their passage from England to America. He later sold the land to Francis Sowerby, but I could not find a record of that transaction. On 9 April 1663, the land was granted to Rowland Griffen by Governor Francis Morrison. I did get a copy of this record, but have not yet transcribed it. The only description of the land that I have so far is that it was on the Blackwater River/Swamp, about a mile southward of the Henry White Plantation. The next stop was at the Isle of Wight Court House. I made copies of every document that I could find that mentioned the DeLoach (plus variant spellings) surname. We already have many of these posted, thanks to Lois Keel and Von Mings Stachon. As soon as I can decipher these, they will be posted also. After leaving the court house, I drove around the back roads of Isle of Wight County. This land is table top flat and in most places only a few feet above sea level. The Blackwater River/Swamp is mostly a dense swampy area, varying in width from 100 yards to 1/2 mile. In some places, there is no discernible river channel, just a tangled swamp. Some of the plantations have been preserved, many have disappeared. I drove by miles of land that had once been cleared, but now was overgrown. There were frequent remnants of farm houses and other old buildings. Without any actual landmarks to go by, it was impossible to find anything that might have been the original Griffen/DeLoach Plantation. A lot more research is required. I went to Smithfield, which is famous for its hams, and is also the location of the Isle of Wight Museum. Unfortunately, the Museum was closed for repairs. I believe that they sell a map of Isle of Wight County, showing all of the plantations that have been restored or preserved. We can hope that the one we're interested in is one of those. Mike

This is my family. Benjamin Franklin DeLoach was my grandfather. It goes this way: Benjamin Franklin DeLoach was married to Catherine Cade, the daughter of Ignacius Cade and Janet Blue. His father was Samuel DeLoach, who was born about 1801 in South Carolina. He was married twice: first to Elizabeth Harp. He lived in Monroe Co. Ga. 1830, Harris Co., Ga 1832, Macon Co., Ga., 1840, Barbour Co., Alabama, 1850, and Pike Co., alabama, 1860. His second wife was Catherine Gilchrist, my grandmother. She was born 25 Dec1821 in Robeson Co., NC. and died 31July1901 in Alabama. Samuel was the son of William DeLoach who was born in 1780 In Edgefirel Co., S.C., and was living in 1840. His wife was Frances Gossett, who was born in Harrie County, Ga. William's father was Thomas DeLoach, Jr., born 20Oct1759, died 29July1819. Thomas Jr's father was Thomas DeLoach born 1726 in Brunswick Co., Va, married Patience Allison about 1749, died about 1805. Thomas was the son of William DeLoach, Jr., born 1695 or 1702 in Old Surrey Co., Virginia, married Judith Wall about 1725 in Virginia, died 1775. William Jr's father was William DeLoach, born about 1678 in Isle ofWight Co., Virginia, Married Eleanor Collins. He died 1747, Brunswick Co., Virginia.. And William was the son of Michael DeLoach (DesLoges) our first DeLoach relative in the USA. Michael lived from 1945-1698. MDF (loachy)
Excuse my goof. I meant to say that H.D. may possibly be Henry since his wife's name was Nancy and this one is listed as Nany. Just a shot in the dark. Gail
I found Sandiford Deloach in the 1860 Barbour County census as follows: Sandiford Deloach M 60 N.C. Katy F 55 N.C. Caroline F 25 Ga. Rena F 15 " Sarah F 14 " Catherine F 12 " Nancy F 10 " Polly F 6 AL Rena F 6/12 AL This listing is in the Louisville, Alabama P.O.. The family is next door to a John Deloach, 27, b. Ga. wife, Susan, 24, b.N.C., daughter, Nancy A., 6/12, b. AL. Could be a son. This does not say that Sandiford's wife's name is Arenia, but with the daughter named Rena, Katy or Katherine may be the wife's second name. I also found H.D. Deloach, age 48, b. NC and his wife Nany, 43, b. GA., H.D., 21, b.GA., and N.A.(female), 18, b. GA. This listing is in Russell County, Alabama, Beat 9, Watoola P.O.. I would be glad to do lookups, if you would like to contact me personally, email me at [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected]) . I hope these listings will help somehow. Gail Ellis

That's right, which is why I said he may be descended from Joseph and Louisa. I have not found the names of the children that Sandeford and Arenia Thomas DeLoach had, nor those of Henry and Nancy Parker DeLoach. Sandeford DeLoach filed several land patents in Barbour County, AL from 1858 to 1860. It could be that some of that land was in the part of Barbour County that became Bullock County, AL in 1866. Dose anyone have the 1850 or 1860 census for Barbour County, AL? Mike
Joseph and Leacy Johnson DeLoach did not have a son named Samuel - but Joseph's brother, Jesse DeLoach (who married Polly Bridgers and moved to Wilkinson Co., Ms.) DID have a son named Samuel who was born in 1812. Samuel, Jr. and Jerusha DeLoach (Joseph's parents) also had a son named "Samuel" who was born about 1776. The name "Samuel" is so common in all the branches off of Samuel DeLoach and Mary Boykin that it could be almost any of the descendants. Sorry I can't pinpoint him for you.
