Barbara, Regarding your query of where I found "South Carolina Militia Companies", I am sure it was on a SC site but not sure where. Did you search using that name? Sorry I cannot help anymore. Wanda
Barbara, Your inquiry with Wanda concerning Michael Deloche in Revolutionary War stoked my interest. Please beware that the conflict in the southern colonies during the Revolutionary War devolved into a type of civil war, that is, colonial loyalists against colonial patriots. Case in point was the Battle at Widow Moore's Creek Bridge just 20 miles outside of Wilmington, NC where about 700 Scots Highland emigrants and 800 Loyalist militia were defeated by 1000 patriot militiamen on Feb 27, 1776. Although not realizing it at the time, the Patriot victory helped to check the Loyalist sentiment in the colonies, but it fanned the fires of the revolutionary fervor to bring most of the North and South Carolina colonies into the fight against the British army. I visited this battlefield at Currie, NC several years ago and found reference to a DeLoach on the Loyalist roster. Below is a weblink for a Patriot veteran of Moore's Creek, Onemimus Futch, Sr, who was a member of the South Carolin! a militia with Hardy DeLoach...Hardy De Loach is the father-in-law to his son Jacob Futch. Interesting connection for DeLoach's who may have opposed each other in this early conflict of our country's birth. Enjoy, Jay ________________________________________________ http://www.allcensus.com/genealogy/pafn35.htm Onesimus Futch Sr. According to Evelyn Futch Smith. North Carolina Palatine - Germans, Evelyn Futch Smith (and from Leon Rivers records), Onesimus was born 1745 in Orangeburg District, NC. The Georgians by J. H. Austin gives his birth as before 1737 in Virginia. He received a land grant as a planter in 1767 and another grant April 13, 1780. And Colony of North Carolina Abstracts of Land Patents show on July 22, 1774 Charles Simpson bought 400 acres in New Hanover Co, "on the east side of Widow Moore's Creek, joining Onisemus Futche" near Tuckashoe Swamp. On October 26, 1767, Peticrew Moore purchased 150 acres also in New Hanover Co, "on the east side of Widow Moore's Creek, joining the swamp side and a point formerly made for Daniel Holland by Onesimus Futch". He is listed as jury member on April 5th, 1771 on a damage lawsuit with 6 pounds assessed in Wilmington, North Carolina, He owned land on 22 Jan 1773 in Wilmington, New Hanover Co, NC. The abstract specifies on January 22, 1773, John Devaun acquired 100 acres in New Hanover Co, "between James Bloodworth and Onesymus Futch on the east side of Widow Moore's Creek below the great Pocoson". Onesimus served in the military in 1776 in Wilmington, New Hanover Co, NC where he served as a private in a South Carolina Regiment during the Revolutionary War. The battle at the Widow Moores Creek Bridge took place on his land just across the river from Wilmington, North Carolina. Serving in the Continental Army with him were Francis McCall, Joshua Pearce, Lewis Lanier, Luke Whitfield, Benjamin Whitfield, Benjamin Jackson and Hardy DeLoach (Hardy De Loach is the father-in-law to his son Jacob Futch). Onesimus Futch Sr., being a member of the South Carolina militia, found himself fighting the Tories of Sir Henry Clinton who was sent to Cape Fear River area of North Carolina. He was with Colonels Richard Caswell and John Lillington on February 27, 1776, when about a thousand members of the Patriot Army defeated an army of Scottish Highlanders at the Widow Moore's Creek Bridge near the port city of Wilmington. He Granted Land on 14 Dec 1826 in Georgia and is in the Georgia La! nd Grants for Military Service, Revolutionary War, and in the Secretary of States Office, Atlanta, Georgia, is the following document: STATE OF GEORGIA By His Excellency, George R. Gilmer, Governor and Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of this State, and of the Militia Thereof: To Whom All These Presents Shall Come Greetings: Know Ye that in pursuance of the several acts of the General Assembly of this State, passed the 9th of June and 24th December, 1825, and the 14th and 27th of December, 1826, to make distribution of the land acquired of the Creek Nation of Indians by Treaty, concluded at the Indian Springs, on the 15th day of February, 1825, and forming the counties of Lee, Muscobee, Troup, Coweta and Carroll in this State, I HAVE GIVEN AND GRANTED, and by these presents DO GIVE AND GRANT unto ONESIMUS FUTCH, R.S. Signed by his Excellency the Governor George R. Gilmer _________________________________ 1830 Bryan Co, GA Federal Census: Revolutionary War soldier. Onesimus is now 70-80 years old. This supports the date of birth as being 1750-1760. Thus the birth date of 1745 is quite probable. Onesimus also owned several slaves according to the 1830 census of Bryan Co, GA. He died about 1832 in either Bulloch or Bryan County, GA. Some researchers have Onesimus Futch as the son of John Futch but after many researchers have reviewed all known information on the early Futch family, it is now thought that Onesimus was the only son of Martin Futch as entrys in his Will makes us consider Onesimus Futch as his only heir and therefore his only child. ____________________________________________________________________________________ >>> "Barbara Daniels" <[email protected]> 3/17/2008 11:55 AM >>> Hi Wanda, I have searched and searched for information on Col. There may have been a lot of DeLoach families in Liberty County in the early days, but I just did a line by line search through the 1860 Liberty County Census images in the GA USGenWeb Archives, and I did not see a single DeLoach listed. There were two listed in the Liberty 1880 census, but they may have been too young to own slaves in the 1860-1870 time frame. In the neighboring Wayne County 1860 census, there was a D.I. DeLoach, 45 years old, a farmer and single. The 1860 Slave Schedule shows him owning two adult slaves and one child. So, this is where I'll try to develop additional leads. I'm not sure who this D.I. DeLoach might have been. He was born in South Carolina in about 1815, and may have been the DeLoach listed in he 1850 Wayne County census index. Anyone with additional information? Mike
Mike, My DeLoach's came to Liberty Co. before 1820. Hardy DeLoach was granted land there for his Rev. War service. Over the years, they spread to adjoining counties, Bulloch, Tattnall, & Chatham among others. Hardy's family all owned slaves, as far as I know, and @ one point John Calvin DeLoach (my gggrandfather) owned the most slaves in Bulloch Co. The "DeLoach's Church Minutes" (Founded by JCD and his brother, William DeLoach in 1840) that I transcribed is online on the Bulloch Co. website and lists several blacks as joining that church. _Minutes of DeLoach's Primitive Baptist Church_ (http://www.rootsweb.com/~gabulloc/churchrecords/deloach_minutes.html) There are to date several black DeLoach families in Savannah, Chatham Co., Ga. Also, FYI, On the 1910, 1920 & 1930 Census of Liberty/Long Counties, Ga., be aware that these families may not have moved during that time as Long Co. was cut from Liberty Co. in the 1920's. I hope this helps your researcher. If not, let me know, & I'll do some more digging for you. Cuz'n, JEAN **************The year's hottest artists on the red carpet at the Grammy Awards. I received a request for help from a lady who is researching Jesse(ie) DeLoach and his wife Hannah Bell. Jesse was born in March 1863 in Liberty County, GA to a slave family. I could not find a census record for him and his family until the 1900 Liberty County census: DeLoach, Jessie Head B Mar 1863 37 GA GA GA Farm Laborer DeLoach, Annah Wife B Fe 1870 30 GA GA GA DeLoach, Aaron Son B AP 1889 11 GA GA GA At School DeLoach, Marion Daughter B May 1890 10 GA GA GA At School DeLoach, James Son B Jun 1893 7 GA GA GA At School DeLoach, Wesley Son B May 1894 6 GA GA GA DeLoach, Jessie Son B Jun 1897 2 GA GA GA DeLoach, George Son B AP 1897 3 GA GA GA DeLoach, Mary Ellen Daughter B Nov 1899 7/12 GA GA GA There is a marriage record for him in Wayne County, GA: Jesse DeLoach 27 Oct 1882 Hannah Bell The 1910 and 1920 Liberty County census records, and the 1930 Long County, GA census shows essentially the same information with the ages incremented, and Annah being spelled Hannah. It seems logical that Jesse's parents were owned by a DeLoach family in Liberty County, and upon receiving their freedom from slavery, they adopted the DeLoach surname. Does anyone have a list of DeLoach families who lived in Liberty County during the 1860-1870 period who either did of may have owned slaves? Is there any other information which might help in this research? Has anyone found information for an African American family named Bell in Long County? Thanks. Mike
Hi Mike, Thanks for your email and explanation about the DNA Project. I got the impression from your previous email that participants were supposed to receive some results directly from SMGF and since I had received nothing I advised you as requested. Thanks again for the clarification. All results that I have seen have been in your emails. Hi Charles, SMGF does not return the results of their DNA tests to the participants, either directly or on their Web site. What they do is post whether or not a participants test matches or does not match a standard set of marker results. The participant can only be identified on their Web page by looking at the small Pedigree Chart that is posted with the results. Since we have the ancestry of all of our participants in the DesLoges data base, we can identify the name of the participant. If you go to the SMGF YDNA Search page: http://www.smgf.org/ychromosome/search.jspx then do a search on the surname DeLoach, you should find 13 participants listed who have specified the name DeLoach in their pedigree. Look at the Pedigree Chart for participant #8, and you will probably recognize it. I have to "play with" the SMGF chart extensively to find the matching numbers of our participants. Once I have found them, they are posted here: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~javan/desloges/dna/results/results.htm If you elect to have a more extensive test done through one of the commercial companies, they will send you the results by mail, along with a certificate and a detailed explanation of what your results mean. Any results, regardless of how you get them, are meaningless unless you can compare them to other persons. Besides our project there are a couple of Web sites where you can compare your DNA tests with thousands of others who have been tested. These are: Ybase http://ybase.org/ Ysearch http://www.ysearch.org/ Both of these sites also let you do a surname search, even if you do not have test results of your own for comparison. Please let me know if you have other questions.
