In a message dated 1/25/00 3:35:01 PM, Pmauer writes: The State of Iowa is considering closing their records to the public. This has already been done in the State of Illinois where you have to rely on someone in the courthouse to look things up for you for a fee of $2.00 and if you want a copy, that is $8.00 more. Many of the people from the East went to Iowa and you may need to obtain some of their records, if not now, in the future. Even if you are not an Iowa resident, please be part of the numbers to be heard about how important it is to have these available. Send an email to keith_weigel@legis.state.ia.us and betty_soupkup@legis.state.ia.us Please forward this message to: 1) as many people you know who reside in Iowa 2) as many genealogical societies as you know 3) as many other organizations whose voices might make a difference 4) everyone you know who are involved in genealogy and history research --------------28DF1081B8C018EB36A31F5B--

Special thanks to Alfred Chassereau, William Scott Jr and Ernest Roach. Eli Wornell "Gus" DeLoach b.26Feb1866 Bulloch Ct d.16Apr1957 Statesboro of heart failure. Thought some of you might be interested. I have no connection to any of this. Just thought it to be something for those searching their ancestors in Hunt Co., would like to know.........You can contact BosieB@pulse.net for more information.. ========================================= Columnist pens Civil War book Captain A.B. Barnes of Greenville was another of those daring rebels who chanced life itself in order to escape the rigors of prison life. The prison he was placed in had a smallpox epidemic with from six to 10 prisoners dying each day, which was brought on by poor sanitation and overcrowding. In the book "Texas Boys in Gray" by Evault Boswell, published by Republic of Texas Press, 377 reminiscences of men who fought for the Confederacy are recorded, representing 158 towns and cities in Texas. W.F. McElyea, who lived in Greenville in 1910, also gives his testimony of how the soldiers protected their flag: "At the battle of Mansfield, our flag was shot down three times and caught and never reached the ground." Other area veterans of the Confederacy listed in the book include D.A. Edwards of Celeste, Z. McDonald of Commerce, J.H. Conrson and B.L. Vance of Como,>>>> Matthew Deloach <<<<and R.R. Williams of Cumby, Aron Wilburn of Honey Grove, W.F. Rensaw of Quinlan, Edward Perry of Wills Point, Henry Garrison, H.M. Harrison, Tom Hill, A.J. King, George O'Neal and J.H. Parrish, all of Wolfe City. The largest group responding to Miss Yeary's inquiry was from Farmersville and include P.J. Baily, G.E. Barringer, E.W. Beeland, William J. Chandler, John Hale, W.H. Harris, Rowland Hudson, Richard Kerby, John Loughridge, W.L. McCandless, R.S. Philpott, John Shipp and Johnathan Woodall. All of the research for "Texas Boys in Gray" was done at the Greenville Public Library from the original book that was the work of Miss Mamie Yeary of McGregor who sent out a questionnaire to the veterans of the Civil War who lived in Texas. Miss Yeary compiled the information in a book called "Reminiscences of the Boys in Gray," and it was printed in 1912. There are over 800 pages in the original book. "I first saw the Yeary book in the old Greenville library back in the sixties," says Boswell. "It was locked up in the rare bookcase and could not be taken from the library." It will be released March 20. AmericaFaye@webtv.net Please Visit my web page at http://community.webtv.net/AmericafayeII/Reflections0 A Great Search Site ! http://www.alltheweb.com/">FAST Search:

    1. [DELOACH-L] William Henderson Deloach
    2. Toxey A. Hall
    3. Re: William Henderson Deloach My grandmother referred to him as "Uncle William". He was her grandmother Roach's brother. He seems to have been an interesting man. The little bit I know about him, and that highly romanticized perhaps, is roughly as follows. He was a Confederate cavalry officer. As the story goes, he was captured and imprisoned on an Island in the middle of a river somewhere. He and a few other prisoners found a knife and tunneled under the wall . As they were attempting to swim across the river to freedom, one of the men got in trouble and screamed, alerting the guards. They were recaptured and finished the war in prison. After the war he was a country miller and invented the two devices described in the patents as enhancements of the threshing process. I can imagine that the "horsepower", which was, in effect a mobile grist mill with which he could thresh grain in situ, reveals a merchandising talent. Mama believed that the turbine water wheel was the original turbine device. According to Mama, he became quite prosperous, and operated a factory in Atlanta for the manufacture of his inventions. After his death sometime early in this century, his sons moved the business to somewhere in Alabama, as I understand it. Notes: 1. This information is based on things my maternal grandmother, Jimmie Belle (Entrekin ) Ashmore told me when I was a child. My memory could be faulty. She was the daughter of William Henderson Entrekin and Mary Virginia Roach . It is she to whom I refer to as Mama. This is a highly personalized writing. 2. Mary Virginia Roach was the daughter of John Washington Roach and Amanda Ardelia Deloach (406 xi) 3. Amanda Ardelia Deloach was the sister of William Henderson Deloach 4. William Henderson Deloach is listed in the descendants of Michel Des Loges as descendent 400v. 5. The fact that William Henderson Deloach and William Henderson Entrekin have the same first and middle names is probably coincidental. 6. John Washington Roach ( "Grandpa Roach") Was a Confederate Officer, Later a Physician and also a prosperous farmer. He disapproved of the Entrekins because he (accurately) considered their prospects poor and particularly because they were Republicans. He kept his daughters under close wraps hoping to make good marriages for them. 7. To further irritate the situation, WH Entrekin Married a second Roach Sister Eva after the Death of Mary Virginia. At approximately the same time his first cousin Charles Entrekin married a third Roach daughter Ardelia. The last two and possibly all three of the Roach-Entrekin marriages were elopements. 8. The Entrekins were descendants of Quakers who came to America with Lord Baltimore. They were from the Mount Zion Community in Carroll County Georgia. Republicans were fairly common there, apparently because of Methodist activity from the North. I understand a paper roughly entitled "The Southern Puritans" has been written about this group. 9. After the death of Eva, WH Entrekin took his family back (from Claxton /Daisey GA) to Mt. Zion because of family connections and because Mt. Zion had a good school and Republicans. Eva died within two years of the marriage (c 1901) and He died during a typhoid epidemic a year or so later. He did not actually contract the disease, but died as a result of overwork, and fatigue because he was tending sick people at night and working a farm during the day. He left six orphans. 10. Dr. Roach was estranged from his Entrekin daughters and did nothing to help these grandchildren. However, they overcame and survived as a close family, with occasional contact with Roach Aunts and cousins who apparently didn't share Grandpa Roach's bitterness. 11. My grandmother remembered "Uncle William" Deloach with particular fondness. She named her only son Charles Deloach Ashmore. Toxey Ashmore Hall

My GGGrandmother was his sister, Amanda Ardelia Deloach. She married John Washington Roach. Their Daughter, Mary Virginia Roach married William Henderson Entrekin (the names are coincidental). Their daughter, Jimmie Belle Entrekin Ashmore was my grandmother. William Henderson Deloach was a favorite Great-Uncle of hers. She considered him a very interesting man, as well as a very good man, and told me a few stories about him. Regards, Toxey>

    2. Toxey and Andy, Since my DeLoach line resided in Sullivan Co., TN at one time, I am have wondered if this deed is a clue as to the ancestry of my John DeLoach b. 1785 SC: <<The following information was received from the Registrar of Deeds in Blountville, TN. A.C. Bedwell & J.R. Collins to DeLoach Mill Mfg Company $104.00 Blountville, Tenn, Nov. 15" 1888>>> Maybe down the line we will find there is a link some how to the ancestors of your William Henderson DeLoach. Unfortunately, I don't think there are any easy answers to this puzzle. Mike....have you looked up Mr. Bedwell and Collins in the Sullivan Co. census? I don't have those census, and the Sullivan Co. page only goes to 1850. Lisa DeLoach Waldman

    1. [DELOACH-L] Averilla DELOACH of Edgecombe Co NC
    2. Averilla DELOACH was the daughter of Samuel DELOACH of Edgecombe Co NC, and is mentioned in his 1764 will as Averilla RUFFIN, wife of Richard RUFFIN. She is also in the will of her mother, Mary BOYKIN DELOACH, who died ten years later. Averilla, sometimes called AVEY, or, erroneously, AMEY, had a sister, Millie, who married William BLOODWORTH. Richard RUFFIN died, and Avey married Noah PITMAN. Noah had bought land in 1779 from William BLOODWORTH'S brother Thomas. Noah PITMAN also apparently died as well. Meanwhile, William and Millie DELOACH BLOODWORTH had a daughter AVEY (sometimes also incorrectly referred to as AMEY)b abt 1788. In 1790 Avey PITMAN died, and the following will abstract exists: (Gammon, D., Edgecombe Co Will Abstracts, 1732-1792, 64): AMEY (X) PITMAN 3 Nov 1790 Feb Ct 1791 O C/165 Daughter ELIZEABETH PITMAN - mare bridle and saddle, cattle, etc. and the rest of my estate is to be sold and money put at interest until the said ELIZEABETH comes of age. Ex. Abishai HORN Wit. The > account was rendered by Melea Bloodworth, widow or relict of said > William Bloodworth, guardian, Feb Ct. 1796. ************ What other documents might shed light on this matter? How do the BOYKINS fit in? What happened between the proving of Avey Pitman's will in 1791 and William Bloodworth's assuming the guardianship of his daughter Avey in August 1792? The estate portion must have been considerable; the matter dragged on long after William Bloodworth's death in 1794, after which Henry Bloodworth assumed guardianship. Henry moved to Tennessee about 1796, and Elizabeth Boykin to Kentucky. Avi Bloodworth died in Sumner Co TN in 1803, but the matter was still far from settled even at that late date.
