    3. John, The Powder works did exist, although the Hagley museum doesn't have personnel records that far back...My 2nd great grandfather also worked at the powder works late 1800's. 2. Hi June I have Ann Grubb Sinclair who married Collins Denny in 1817. I believe Collins Denny was from Smyrna (Duck Creek Quaker Meeting). From what years are you Denny's? My great great grandparents home is for sale in Middletown DE and I am so tempted to pose as a potential buyer to see the inside of it! I have taken a few photos of the outside, I guess that will have "to do" Lynn Newark, DE

    3. How great it must have been to go through the old trunk, Suny!!! My ancestors were from Smyrna, DE and the house still stands at 123 W. Commerce St. I believe it is a Funeral Home now. I went to Smyrna about 15 years ago and took some pictures of it. I found an old picture of it at American Memory Site by typing in Benjamin Benson. It is under HABS for Delaware. It was completed in 1831. How I would love to see the inside. I speak with Mr George Caley, who is a genealogist in Smyrna often and plan a trip there in the Spring. When I was there 15 years ago, I also took pictures at the Asbury ME Church yard, where I found my GG grandparents Benjamin Benson and Maria Shewell Benson's tomb stones. Here are some of the names I am working on from that area: 1.Benson 2.Shewell 3.Denny (Denney) 4.Crockett Thanks for reading all of this, June

    3. June, why don't you talk to the realtors or owner of the house and see if you can't get a quick tour. They might even like finding out abt the history. One of my brothers visited my grandparents home in Portland OR a few years ago. My grandparents died in abt 1960. The owners were very interested to know my Danish carpenter grandfather had built the house himself in the 1940's. You have much more history. Very politely check. Let us know if you do. Listed you will find Milton's Historical Society among others. I just back from De recently visiting my Callaway cousin, and trying to restore my grandfatherx5 house that I inherited. It is approx 200 years old. Recently found his wife Elizabeth's trunk in the attic with all her personal writings. Found amazing memoirs about her children Elizabeth and Mary and others. It helped me understand my direct line much better. Not all of us can be so lucky to find this treasure. :) If you are researching family from De, you should definetly decide to take a trip there. You will enjoy all it has to offer. Also stop at Dover State Archives, they been helping me for several years. Any questions feel free to email me personally. 2. George F. Sanborn Jr.
    3. Dear Listers, I would like to know whether there is anybody on the list who is researching families named Robinson (possibly Robertson and Robeson). In particular, I am looking for people of those names who might have lived in or had ties to Philadelphia in the 1700s. I have an ancestor named Alice or Elsie Robinson who married in Philadelphia in 1778, and I have been unable to find her parents there. Could she have been from Delaware? I suspect that she was from a family with Loyalist leanings as she married a man in the British army just before the Tories were evacuated from Philadelphia to New York City. Any clues will be gratefully received. George Sanborn Desperate in New Hampshire

    1. [DELAWARE] messages abt my DE Fleetwoods, reply from another Fleetwood researcher
    2. Dear Madeline Fleetwood Jewett and other Fleetwood researchers, This is a long message. It includes: (1) a message I posted to genforum about (a) my Fleetwood family and (b) Fleetwood tombstones found in Blades, Sussex Co., Delaware. (2) a response to my genforum message by Madeline Fleetwood Jewett. (3) my list of Fleetwood tombstone inscriptions from the Blades Cemetery, Blades, Sussex Co., Delaware. I tried to post a response as requested by Madeline to the genforum site, but it would not "take." Therefore, I am posting this to several rootsweb lists and to Madeline with the hope that the new interactive sharing of information between rootsweb and genweb messages (which I really am not clear about!) will enable interested readers to get access to the information without it being posted to genforum. First, my original message posted to genforum on Jan. 22, 2002, with a few edits to make it clearer. (Madeline thought it was a confusing message): Because of proximity, I believe it is highly likely that the Sussex County, DE, FLEETWOODs are related. In the census lists for MD and DE, there are a number of Fleetwood children found living with (adopted by) other familes. Was there at least one nuclear family group that disintegrated? I fear that my Milford, Sussex Co. (and maybe Milford, Kent Co.), DE Fleetwoods may have been from a disintegrated family since I cannot seem to connect them to the nearby Bridgeville and Seaford Fleetwoods. This is what I know so far: Curtis Fleetwood (from my mother's family Bible) OR Jehamara Fleetwood (from his daughter Ida May's death certificate) married Susan C. Scott. I can find Susan in a 1920 census living with her son-in-law Harry Lee Hill and daughter Minnie (Fleetwood) Hill. She is listed as a 68-year-old widow (thus born 1851-52). There is a Susan C. Fleetwood buried in the Milford Cemetery, b. 1862, d. 1927. Our Susan's death certificate from the DE archives shows she died in 1927. Did someone shave 10 years off her life? Accidentally? Did Susan do it herself? I think the Susan C. in the Milford Cemetery is our Susan. She is not buried with her husband unless he has no stone (cemetery records destroyed in a fire). I have been able to find no records of a Curtis Fleetwood married to a Susan, nor any records of a Jehamara Fleetwood at all. There is an 1880 census with a "Jer." [b. 1856-57] and "S.C." [b. 1852-53] Fleetwood which COULD be this family group. There are three children listed: Wm. H. [b. 1872-73], Geo. A. [b. 1876-77], and baby 11 months old, paralyzed [b.1879]. Although I have no information on the two boys, the names do match names of this couple's children found in my mother's family Bible (more on that later). The only problem is that Jer.'s stated age would not likely enable him to be the parent of the son Wm. H. in this census. Perhaps Jer.'s age was recorded incorrectly or I am reading it incorrectly. This is a brief synopsis/outline of what I know of the children of Jehamara Fleetwwod or Curtis Fleetwood and Susan C. Scott: (1) Ida May Fleetwood [b. Sep. 1880, DE, prob. Milford; d. May 1943, Milford, DE] married George Joseph Still [b. Sep. 1872, 1873, or 1874, DE (conflicting records); d. Jul 1953, Milford, DE]. They had two children. (my direct line). (2) Minnie Fleetwood (b. Apr 1884; d. Jul 1957, Milford, DE) married Harry Lee Hill [b. Aug 1882; d. Mar 1955, Milford, DE]. They had 2 children. (Minnie's name may have been Minerva since Ida May's youngest daughter was named after Minnie and her name was Jennie Minerva) (3) Harry Benjamin "Mike" Fleetwood [b. May 1891, DE, prob. Milford; d. Jan 1968, Blades, Sussex Co., DE (near Seaford)] married Ora Page Elliott [b. 1900, d. 1958]. They had one child. Children (4), (5), (6), and (7): In my parent's family Bible (Gertrude Marie Clarke and Disston McCullough Carter), there is a place to record the mother's and father's family trees. In addition to the previous children of Curtis orJehamara and Susan C. (Scott) Fleetwood, the following children are listed. There were no dates recorded. I have not yet located records on these remaining children -- I would LOVE to make contact with their descendants or people researching them! (4) William Fleetwood (5) James Fleetwood (6) George Fleetwood (7) Mary E. Fleetwood Finally, in the Blades, Sussex Co., DE, cemetery, where Harry Benjamin and Ora Page (Elliott) Fleetwood are buried, there are many Fleetwood gravesites. If anyone is interested, I can send you transcriptions of the gravestones (all but two or three which could not be read). Karen Carter, Sandy, UT Madeline Fleetwood Jewett posted the following message on genforum in response to my message: Karen, Your message was very interesting though a little hard to follow. I will get out my map and see how close your family was to mine. My father was born in Brighton. His father's name was Eustace Charles fleetwood and worked for the railroad. born in East Grinstad. I have gotten his birth certificate and his father was John William.Eustace was my grandfather and he was born in 1857. I can get no record of his death and so the inscriptions of gravestones is an appealing thought. I am fairly certain that that union disolved in one way or another and my grandmother remarried. She came to America to visit her son (my father) twice. Just when I don't know for sure. If any of this information is helpful great but I would like to see the cemetary inscriptions, they might be helpful to me. thank you Madeline. My response: Jan. 31, 2002. Here is a list of the tombstone inscriptions that are in the Blades Cemetery which is in Blades, Sussex County, Delaware: Same plot: G. H. Fleetwood 1864-1940 Mary E. Fleetwood 1973-1959 _______ Same plot: Calvin R. Fleetwood - April 25, 1928 - Jan. 5, 1970 Joyce A. Fleetwood - Mar. 30, 1945 - (BLANK) _______ Large plot with pillar stone and other stones: Inscriptions on the pillar were difficult or impossible to read. The only information I could get off of it was: one side: (illegible) Fleetwood - Nov. 22, 1898 - Apr. 12, 1924 one side: Jeaneete D. Fleetwood - July 2, 1920 - Aug. 13, 1923 Could read nothing (if there was anything) on the other two sides. Joint standing stone next to the pillar had inscribed on it: Earl C. Fleetwood - 1896-1978 Blanche E. Fleetwood - 1907-1976 At the foot of each grave was a smaller stone reading, respectively, Father and Mother. Separate stone: just the initials J. D. F. Separate stone: illegible _______ Large joint stone with heart in center has both names and years of birth and death on each side of the heart. Inside the heart is their marriage date. In addition, on each of the two graves, separate stones include full birth and death date information and indicate "Father" and "Mother" at the tops of the stones: Eunice M. Fleetwood - July 31, 1899 - May 16, 1989 Married Oct. 21, 1921 G. Lynk Fleetwood - Dec. 1897 - Oct. 28, 1970 ________ Same plot: Harry B. Fleetwood - May 23, 1891 - Jan. 17, 1968 Cpl Co. E 59 Pioneer Infantry World War I Ora P. Fleetwood - 1900 - 1958 _______ Stone standing alone: Horace N. Fleetwood - 1868-1937 _______ Same stone: Kathy S. Thanks! -----Original Message----- From: LOUWELOUWE@aol.com [mailto:LOUWELOUWE@aol.com] Sent: Sunday, January 27, 2002 11:29 AM To: shari@tyaskin.com Subject: Re: question Shari, Thanks a bunch. Hi list, I was wondering if there was someone out there who could do a census search for me? I'm trying to figure out who the parents were to my great great grandfather. Some info we have shows he was from Delaware, other info shows other places. I've searched the other places and have come up empty. I don't have a lot to go on but this is what I do know. Jonathan S(amual) Johnston was born 16 May 1833, Delaware (I'm assuming). He had at least one brother, William M. Johnston, born 2 December 1829. Some of his paper work says Delaware, some shows England and still others show elsewhere. According to the cemetery records we have on Jonathan, his father's name was Joseph and he too was born in Delaware. The Delaware part of it I don't think is correct because of something I found on another record from William's family. However, it is possible. At this point, I just don't know. No mother was listed, however, Hanna (Hannah) could be her name. I do not know this for fact though. What I need then, is a census that possibly shows a head of house hold named Joseph with a child named William and one named Jonathan. There could be other children but at this point I don't know. Is there a census record for that time period? Would someone be willing to look it up for me? This has been a major brick wall for me and I would love to find that one piece I need. Are there birth certificates for this time period as well? I am sorry to say that I don't have any county. All I have is paper work showing Delaware. I live in Tacoma, Washington so I could do some lookups in exchange if someone needed anything from this area. I do not subscribe to this list yet so please email me directly at Louwelouwe@aol.com . Thank you in advance for any help or suggestions. Rhonda, Tacoma, WA

"The November 30, 1864 battle of Honey Hill, S.C. is virtually unnamed in most histories of the war. From all standpoints, it was a terrible blunder and a comparatively unimportant expedition on the sea coast, overshadowed by the wondrous movement of the armies under Thomas, Sherman and Grant... 2. Kent, Gary
    3. Hello, my great grandmother's cousin, JAMES STROUD, and his wife EDITH STROUD, were living in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1913. James was born in England in 1871. I was wondering if any one knew anything about this couple, or their descendants. Also, if someone had access to the 1910 or 1920 census for Wilmington they could see if this family was there then and give me details. Alternatively information from the city directory of this time would be very helpful. I come from the Australian branch of this family and am eventually hoping to find descendants of this couple to exchange information about our respective families. Delaware research in Australia is not easy! Thanks, Gary Kent
