    1. Hudson family research
    2. Dear Gwen, I noticed you asked Dave Kearny to look for Hudson family members. Maybe some of my Hudsons are yours as well? I have two Hudson women (sisters) who married two brothers of my great-grandfather. Of course, I am wondering if they have turned up in your tree! Dear Gwen and anyone else who recognizes this clan! I have included brief summaries of my known HUDSON connections below. WILLIAM H. HUDSON (b. 1840-41, DE, as per 1870 & 1880 census) married: ANNIE G. MARKER (b. 1841-42, DE, as per 1870 & 1880 census) Annie's maiden name comes from death and marriage certificates of daughter, IRENE/IRENA/ARENA/RENA (HUDSON) STILL. One record lists Annie's first given name as Nancy (daughter's death certificate); the rest of the records, including the census reports show her name as Annie. Children of WILLIAM H. HUDSON and ANNIE G. MARKER: Child 1: IRENE W. HUDSON (b. June 12, 1867, Milford, DE; d. October 09, 1949, Milford, DE) Notes regarding her given name: The 1870 census lists her as ARENA HUDSON. The 1880 census lists her as ARENA HUDSON. Her 1886 marriage record lists her as RENA HUDSON. The 1900 census lists her name as IRENA STILL. The 1910 census lists her name as ARENA STILL. The 1920 census lists her name as IRENE STILL. The 1930 census lists name as IRENE W STILL. Her 1949 death certificate lists her name as IRENE STILL. Irene married ALEXANDER STILL in 1886. They had two sons named ALEXANDER and CHARLES. Note: Irene's death certificate was signed by a DANIEL STILL who is not yet identified. Child 2: MARTHA ELLA HUDSON (b. Nov. 1869, Milford, DE) Notes regarding her given name: The 1870 census lists her as MARTHA E. HUDSON. The 1880 census lists her as ELLA HUDSON Her 1889 marriage bond shows her name as ELLIE HUDSON. The 1900 census lists her as ELLA STILL. The 1910 census lists her as M. ELLA STILL. Note: The 1910 census taker for the area the STILL family lived in listed all middle initials before first given names on every report. Therefore, it is likely that he believed her name was ELLA M. STILL. The 1920 census lists her as ELLA STILL. The 1930 census lists her as ELLA W. (sic). Her son William H. Still's 1966 funeral records at the Lofland Funeral Home in Milford, DE lists his mother's name as MARTHA E. STILL. ELLA married WILLIAM H. STILL (brother of ALEXANDER STILL who married sister IRENE) By 1900 they had given birth to 8 children, 5 of home are living (as per 1900 census). Only 4 ever show up in the census lists as living with them. A 5th child may have been born prior to their marriage and appears to be living with her paternal grandfather in 1900. I don't find her again until she is living with her spouse in 1920. That child's son is shown living with William and Ella in the 1920 census list and he is listed as their grandson; the same child is also shown living with his parents across the street from his grandparents. That child's living descendants have no indication that their something-grandmother had been born out of wedlock, but they also did not have her marriage record and were unaware that their birth date for her (and her birth year as stated on the 1900 census list) was one year earlier than her parents' marriage bond. By 1910, ELLA is listed as having had 8 (possibly 9?) children, 6 of whom are listed as living. However, the four children living with them in 1910 are the same four children found living with them in 1900. Where did that 6th child go? This may be a census taker error. WILLIAM ROBERT HUDSON (b. 1872-73, as per 1880 census; Dec. 17, 1872 as per WWI Civilian Draft Registration -- also only source that lists his middle name.) In 1910, he is shown living in Milford with wife, D. Margueritt. They have been married 15 years and had one child who was no longer living. In 1920, he and Maggie are living in Milford. No other members of the household. In 1930, he and Maggie are living in Milford. No other members of the household. Note: In 1920 & 1930 he is listed on the same page as ALONZO STILL And, just to keep things interesting, ALONZO STILL's father, ALEXANDER STILL (son of another ALEXANDER STILL who is a very likely candidate to be the brother of another WILLIAM H. STILL who is the father of the STILL boys who married the HUDSON girls) has other HUDSON women living in his household. In 1870 ALEXANDER (age 25) AND ANN E. (age 24) STILL have sons ALONZO (age 5) and DAVID (age 3) living with them. . . AND he also has ELLEN HUDSON (age 45) and SALLIE HUDSON (age 21) living with them. In 1880 ALEXANDER (age 45 -sic) and ELIZA (age 35) have sons ALONZO (age 15), DAVID (age 13), daughter SARAH E. (age 9), and son JOHN (age 3) living with them. . . and SALLIE HUDSON (age 25)
