Dear Friends in DE., PA. or even NJ. I am searching for information on the Knights of Pyhtias or for a photo of my mother's first husband: SAMUEL EDWARD COLE who was Chancellor-Commander in July 1907 the Osceola Lodge in Newark, DE. Lodge #5 was the last surviving lodge in DE. and became attached to the state of PENNA. when the Domain of Delaware surrendered its charter. It is still in existence and is being administered by the Grand Sec'y. of Penna. He is Donald H. Grant at 25 S. Morton Ave., in Morton, PA. Anyone who can provide me with a photo of my mom's first husband will be a friend for life and I will gladly pay for any costs involved. Mr Cole died in Newark, DE. in 1940 and is buried in Pleasant Hill MD., Methodist Cemetery. Thank you. Peter McCue peter19252000@juno.com Dec. 27, 2002
I found the following in the Calendar of Kent County Delaware Probate Records 1680-1800: "Houstown, James Yeoman. Admin of, to Hannah Houstown, widow Nov. 14, 1760. Reg. of Wills, Liber K, folio 246 Note: Arch Vol. A25, page 45 shows Hannah, the widow, later married William Cleaver" I suspect that this James Houstown might be the father of Anthony Houston, born 10 March 1757 in Kent County and died 18 August 1831 in Scott County, Kentucky. Can someone tell me what I need to do to get a photo-copy of the will from the microfilm in the archives so that I can check out the will in more detail? Thanks in advance, Jim Houston
Kathleen Hope your visit with family and Holiday are extra Special. You deserve a Hiatus! Have fun..I'm sure everyone on this board will behave! LOL! And if I may speak for all of us who use DEKENT-L@rootsweb.com MERRY CHRISTMAS and a HAPPY NEW YEAR...
Kathleen, Hope you have a great Christmas. Enjoy all of those children and grandchildren while you can. Ours are scattered all over the country. From Florida to North Carolina to Virginia to California to Missouri to Nevada to Colorado to Tennessee to Indiana to Michigan. It's been since 1986 since all of our eight kids were together. Even then not all of their spouses or kids were able to get to their grandmother's funeral. Since then we've added several grandkids and thirteen great-grandkids. Some we've never seen except in pictures. Patricia
Dear List Members, On Monday, December 23, I begin my Christmas Holiday week. I am spending it with my four children, their wives and husbands and my 9.5 grandchildren. It will be the first time in over 10 years I have had all my children with me for Christmas. I am thrilled to say the least. It is hard, as many of you know, when all of your children and grandchildren live thousands of miles from you. As you have already guessed, I will not be spending as much time as usual online watching over your list, but I will be back to full time on Tuesday, December 31st. I have also chosen not to have a list-sitter watch you while I am away. I really do not think you need one. I will be checking in each evening after the grandchildren and down for the day. If there is a problem which you think I need to address, send a personal message to me at KathleenBurnett@earthlink.net. I will check those first thing each night. If off topic messages are sent or if suddenly someone calls for a Roll Call, please just let it pass. Just smile and remember what I would say and hit that delete button. I will take care of the problems for you as soon as I check in. I have the best lists on Rootsweb and the greatest members so I know you will be just fine. I wish for each of you and yours a special Holiday Season filled with love, friendship, friends and family. I thank each of you for your friendship and for your support this past year. You fill my my world. Kathleen Burnett List Mom

am researching COHEE. Some of this family originated in Kent County, DE and migrated to Butler Co. OH. From there some (or their descendants) went to Clinton Co, IN. The specific line I am interested in is that of some of the male children of Benjamin COHEE Sr. His sons: Lemuel Cohee b. Abt 1770, DE; d. 1810 DE; m. Anne Cooper 2/17/1807. Benjamin Jr. went to Butler Co, OH bet 1813 - 1816. He then migrated to IN in 1830 (of this line I have information) William COHEE b. abt 1770 d. abt 1840 (unknown location) m. (1) Rebecca Richardson;(2) Cynthia Satterfield (don't know if he went to OH) James COHEE b. abt. 1775 Kent Co, DE; d. abt. 1832 Butler Co, OH Vincent Dill COHEE Sr. b. 1/8/1781 Kent Co, DE; d. 11/12/1868, Butler Co, OH (have info on this line) ********I am specifically looking at these three brothers in hope of finding the father of my direct ancestor, Lemuel COHEE, b. DE 3/7/1811 d. Clinton Co, IN 3/27/1857 It is possible he left Delaware. I suspect one the of the brothers listed in bold print is his father. OR: possibly another COHEE is father of Lemuel b. 1811???? Your help is greatly appreciated!! Thank you! Sharon Cowen secowen@c-magic.com

Hi Lists, I received the following from another list & asked for permission to post it. I found this very interesting & thought it might be helpful in regard to money being used in this time period: ----- Original Message ----- From: <Folkerth@aol.com> To: <PACHESTE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, November 24, 2002 8:15 PM Subject: Re: [PACHESTE] SCHEME Of A LOTTERY, 1762 In a message dated 11/23/2002 2:36:03 PM Central Standard Time, debra.street@verizon.net writes: January 14, 1762 The Pennsylvania Gazette > > SCHEME Of A LOTTERY, for raising Fifteen Hundred Dollars, to help to > > finish the New Presbyterian Church, now erecting in the Forks of > > Brandywine. > Wait one. > > I guess I don't understand a 1762 posting that refers to money as dollars'. > > I thought the currency of the realm at that time was pounds ... and shillings ... and pence, etc. > > Can someone explain this ?? > > DICK FOLKERTH > Dallas, Texas Allow me to venture a guess as to what the term dollars might have meant in 1762. As you know, George III was slipping in and out of insanity, and would not allow any mintage of royal coinage. I don't know the exact timing of this, but suffice to say his attitude and the rapid expansion of commerce in the colonies caused a lasting and inconvenient shortage of coinage, even down to farthings, pence, and shillings. One of the more popular coins used was the Spanish Eight Reales, often called a dollar. Eventually, the Bank of England bought a number of these coins from Spain, and stamped a tiny royal bust on the neck of the Spanish king. This lead to the creation of a rhyme: The bank to make its Spanish dollars pass Stamped the head of a fool on the neck of an ass. Notwithstanding the legitimization of the Dollar many of them were used in their "native" state. Actually the Spanish Eight Reales piece was legal tender in the United States until (I think) 1856. Incidentally, the dollar, being of good silver, was cut into "bits"...eight of them, thus "two bits", a quarter, "four bits", half a dollar, if you are old enough to remember the use of those terms. One bit was a "picayune", an eighth of a dollar, and one supposes, the price of a pack of those New Orleans cigarettes called "Picayune"; strong enough to curl your hair! Or perhaps the entire Scheme of a Lottery was a fake! Phil Andrew Lache pas la patat

About 15 years ago I purchased a sealed box at an auction in Delaware. In the box was a small (about 2 in x 3 in) brass plate which looks to have once been on a tombstone.
