Hi lists, Does anyone have a connect to the following BERRY-WEBBER- VOSS-WYATT-MEDFORD Families? This is my BERRY Line: My Arthur John b. 31 May 1851 in Caroline Co., MD, is NOT the child of Wm & Martha (Vaulx/Voss) WEBBER but was raised by them. Wm WEBBER is named as Arthur's father on his death certificate but I do not believe this to be correct -- mother is unknown. Arthur John is the son of Margaret BERRY who m. a Wm MEDFORD on 14 Oct 1848 in Caroline Co., MD & was accused of adultery in 1851. Hence, Arthur John WEBBER is Margaret's illegitimate son! (See WEBBERs in the 1860 -1870 census below.) Ref: "HEIRS and LEGATEES of CAROLINE COUNTY" page 57, by Irma HARPER. Martha (Vaulx/Voss) WEBBER had a brother Holiday VAULX/VOSS, who m. a Nancy E. BERRY, on 21 Oct 1850 in Caroline Co., MD & she is the sister or cousin of Margaret (Berry) MEDFORD. This relationship is the reason why Margaret's children Arthur John & daughter Mary MEDFORD (fathered by Wm MEDFORD) came to be living with & raised by the WEBBERs!!! Margaret may have died about 1858 or she just left the children with the WEBBERs, in that year. A John STAFFORD maybe Arthur John's real father. (See info of the court cases below.) William MEDFORD vs. Margaret MEDFORD: [Wm MEDFORD who m. Margaret E. BERRY, accuses her of adultery] 1851 1st Monday in July 1852--Margaret MEDFORD to appear in court on this date in Denton, Caroline Co., MD complaint by Wm MEDFORD. Issued the 26th of May 1852. Witnesses: Holiday VOSS John W. VOSS Zebulor LAYTON John STAFFORD Note: Henrietta Wood told me there were papers missing from this court case. 2nd Monday in March 1858--Margaret MEDFORD to appear in court on this date in Denton, Caroline Co., MD complaint by Wm MEDFORD. Issued the 24th of November 1857. 1860 Census--Denton Post Office, Caroline Co., MD WEBBER William 47 M W MD Farmer R/P $2500 P/P $380 Martha 39 F W MD James 18 M W MD William 13 M W MD Ann 10 F W MD Charles 8 M W MD John 6 M W MD Mary 4 F W MD Holiday 2 M W MD Richard 10/12 M W MD *MEDFORD Mary 14 F W MD Arthur 9 M W MD (my line)* *Mary is the daughter of Wm W. & Margaret (Berry) MEDFORD, Jr. 1870 Census--3rd Dist., Denton Post Office, Caroline Co., MD WEBBER William 54 M W MD Farmer R/P $1800 P/P $800 Martha 48 F W MD Holiday 13 M W MD Richard 11 M W MD Martha J 9 F W MD George L 2 M W MD * Arthur J 19 M W MD *Why is Arthur John the last child on both the 1860 & 1870 Census? Is he a child of someone else??? Yes, Margaret BERRY! I believe a William BERRY is the father of Margaret & Nancy E. BERRY because of the following connections: LAND 29 Dec 1840 -- 9 Jan 1841 William WEBBER to Daniel WYATT & John THAWLEY, his securities for a note given to William W. MEDFORD for abt $40 - livestock & furniture. Wit: Thomas MELVIN. Ack. bef. Elijah R. MANSHIP. Ref: "Caroline County Maryland Land Records," Book #17, 1840-1843. 12 Jan 1841 - 22 Jun 1841 Daniel WYATT & Mary his wife of KCD to William BERRY of CACO - cons. $20 - pt. of "Friendship," adj. "Punch Hall" - cont. abt 3 acres. Daniel & Mary his wife e/a bef. Thomas MELVIN, Elijah R. MANSHIP. Ref. "Caroline County Maryland Land Records," Book # 17, 1840-1843 NOTE: "Punch Hall," today is, "Burrsville" & sits on the Caroline Co., MD & Kent Co., DE State line but is considered to be in MD. KCD = Kent Co., DE CACO = Caroline Co., MD I hope this all wasn't to confusing to you! :) The BERRYs in Kent Co. DE & Caroline Co., MD do have a connection. Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS)
Good morning list, I received this from another mailing list & I'm passing it on! :) Happy hunting, Helen (DCGS) Subj: [CLARE] Ali's Clare Roots From: LizHaren@aol.com To: IRL-CLARE-L@rootsweb.com Ali's Irish roots revealed online.ie 08 Feb 2002 Muhammad Ali is Irish, according to new genealogical evidence. Researchers at the Co Clare Heritage Centre have unearthed documentation to show one of Ali's great grandfathers came from the county town of Ennis. It seems Abe Grady, born around 160 years ago in Co Clare, emigrated to the United States in the 1860s. He settled in Kentucky and later married an African-American woman. Their son also married an African-American and one of the daughters of that union was Ali's mother, named Odessa Lee Grady. She married Cassius Clay senior, and they settled in Louisville, where their son, later to become known as the Louisville Lip, was initially given his father's name on his birth in 1942. He later changed his name to Muhammad Ali when he converted to the Nation of Islam after winning the world title in 1964. Genealogist Antoinette O'Brien said: "Through research being carried out for the Irish language TV station TG4 on Ali, we established Ali's great-great grandfather, John Grady, the father of Abe, rented a house and a small garden in Ennis with a rateable value of fifteen shillings (75p) in 1855. "There is no doubt that Abe Grady was Ali's great grandfather. I am not sure whether Ali knows about this - we have not yet managed to contact him." The development has delighted the small town of Ennis. Local council chairman Michael Corley said: "We would like to honour Ali as one of the heroes of the 20th century and invite him here." Hi Listers: I am seeking any info on the family of my mother's first husband: SAMUEL EDWARD COLE. He lived with his sister: Ida Morrison (Mrs. William) at 28 Choate St., in Newark where he died in 1940. "Ed" Cole worked for the paper mills; was a volunteer fireman; Knights of Pythias Osceola Lodge #5; Concordia Lodge #67 of the Masons and a life-long Methodists. His parents were: James & Mary Elizabeth (nee Drennen) Cole. In addition to his sister Elizabeth (Lizzy) McCreary (who lived at 423 E. 6th St., in Wilmington, Cole also had brothers: William, Tolbert & George. I know that Tolbert and his wife Elizabeth lived at 48 Choate St., in Newark in 1920 and that Samuel Edward Cole and my mom, Clara, lived at 48 No. Chapel St., Newark at least in 1918 when "Ed" had to register for the draft while on medical leave. I will pay for any photo of Sam E. Cole and any reasonable research costs for other family information which declining health and advancing age prohibit me from doing myself. THANKS. peter19252000@juno.com

Dear Madeline Fleetwood Jewett and other Fleetwood researchers, This is a long message. It includes: (1) a message I posted to genforum about (a) my Fleetwood family and (b) Fleetwood tombstones found in Blades, Sussex Co., Delaware. (2) a response to my genforum message by Madeline Fleetwood Jewett. (3) my list of Fleetwood tombstone inscriptions from the Blades Cemetery, Blades, Sussex Co., Delaware. I tried to post a response as requested by Madeline to the genforum site, but it would not "take." Therefore, I am posting this to several rootsweb lists and to Madeline with the hope that the new interactive sharing of information between rootsweb and genweb messages (which I really am not clear about!) will enable interested readers to get access to the information without it being posted to genforum. First, my original message posted to genforum on Jan. 22, 2002, with a few edits to make it clearer. (Madeline thought it was a confusing message): Because of proximity, I believe it is highly likely that the Sussex County, DE, FLEETWOODs are related. In the census lists for MD and DE, there are a number of Fleetwood children found living with (adopted by) other familes. Was there at least one nuclear family group that disintegrated? I fear that my Milford, Sussex Co. (and maybe Milford, Kent Co.), DE Fleetwoods may have been from a disintegrated family since I cannot seem to connect them to the nearby Bridgeville and Seaford Fleetwoods. This is what I know so far: Curtis Fleetwood (from my mother's family Bible) OR Jehamara Fleetwood (from his daughter Ida May's death certificate) married Susan C. Scott. I can find Susan in a 1920 census living with her son-in-law Harry Lee Hill and daughter Minnie (Fleetwood) Hill. She is listed as a 68-year-old widow (thus born 1851-52). There is a Susan C. Fleetwood buried in the Milford Cemetery, b. 1862, d. 1927. Our Susan's death certificate from the DE archives shows she died in 1927. Did someone shave 10 years off her life? Accidentally? Did Susan do it herself? I think the Susan C. in the Milford Cemetery is our Susan. She is not buried with her husband unless he has no stone (cemetery records destroyed in a fire). I have been able to find no records of a Curtis Fleetwood married to a Susan, nor any records of a Jehamara Fleetwood at all. There is an 1880 census with a "Jer." [b. 1856-57] and "S.C." [b. 1852-53] Fleetwood which COULD be this family group. There are three children listed: Wm. H. [b. 1872-73], Geo. A. [b. 1876-77], and baby 11 months old, paralyzed [b.1879]. Although I have no information on the two boys, the names do match names of this couple's children found in my mother's family Bible (more on that later). The only problem is that Jer.'s stated age would not likely enable him to be the parent of the son Wm. H. in this census. Perhaps Jer.'s age was recorded incorrectly or I am reading it incorrectly. This is a brief synopsis/outline of what I know of the children of Jehamara Fleetwwod or Curtis Fleetwood and Susan C. Scott: (1) Ida May Fleetwood [b. Sep. 1880, DE, prob. Milford; d. May 1943, Milford, DE] married George Joseph Still [b. Sep. 1872, 1873, or 1874, DE (conflicting records); d. Jul 1953, Milford, DE]. They had two children. (my direct line). (2) Minnie Fleetwood (b. Apr 1884; d. Jul 1957, Milford, DE) married Harry Lee Hill [b. Aug 1882; d. Mar 1955, Milford, DE]. They had 2 children. (Minnie's name may have been Minerva since Ida May's youngest daughter was named after Minnie and her name was Jennie Minerva) (3) Harry Benjamin "Mike" Fleetwood [b. May 1891, DE, prob. Milford; d. Jan 1968, Blades, Sussex Co., DE (near Seaford)] married Ora Page Elliott [b. 1900, d. 1958]. They had one child. Children (4), (5), (6), and (7): In my parent's family Bible (Gertrude Marie Clarke and Disston McCullough Carter), there is a place to record the mother's and father's family trees. In addition to the previous children of Curtis orJehamara and Susan C. (Scott) Fleetwood, the following children are listed. There were no dates recorded. I have not yet located records on these remaining children -- I would LOVE to make contact with their descendants or people researching them! (4) William Fleetwood (5) James Fleetwood (6) George Fleetwood (7) Mary E. Fleetwood Finally, in the Blades, Sussex Co., DE, cemetery, where Harry Benjamin and Ora Page (Elliott) Fleetwood are buried, there are many Fleetwood gravesites. If anyone is interested, I can send you transcriptions of the gravestones (all but two or three which could not be read). Karen Carter, Sandy, UT Madeline Fleetwood Jewett posted the following message on genforum in response to my message: Karen, Your message was very interesting though a little hard to follow. I will get out my map and see how close your family was to mine. My father was born in Brighton. His father's name was Eustace Charles fleetwood and worked for the railroad. born in East Grinstad. I have gotten his birth certificate and his father was John William.Eustace was my grandfather and he was born in 1857. I can get no record of his death and so the inscriptions of gravestones is an appealing thought. I am fairly certain that that union disolved in one way or another and my grandmother remarried. She came to America to visit her son (my father) twice. Just when I don't know for sure. If any of this information is helpful great but I would like to see the cemetary inscriptions, they might be helpful to me. thank you Madeline. My response: Jan. 31, 2002.
