    3. For anyone interested, here are DeGruy entries in the Orleans Parish Poll Tax Rolls 1869-1870 I'm not sure what we can glean from this other than the person listed was still living during these years and we can find out what ward they are in. Evidently the second number refers to a page number... and on the page would tell us whether or not they paid their poll tax.... so limited information... but, here it is for what it's worth: Degruy, Charles 7-19 DeGruy, Charles 5-26 Degruy, Edouard 5-73 DeGruy. F. 5-26 DeGruy, Francis 6-20 Degruy, H. 7-19 Degruy, J.V. 5-21 DeGruy, Joseph 5-73 DeGruy, Louis 5-25 DeGruy, O. V. 6-19 Degruy, P.O. 7-21 no Dufouchars or Verloins listed First Ward: From Felicity to Thalia Second Ward: From Thalia to Julia Third Ward: From Julia to Canal Fourth Ward: From Canal to St. Louis Fifth Ward: From St. Louis to St. P:hilip Sixth Ward: From St. Philip to Esplanade Seventh Ward: From Esplanade to Elysian Fields Eighth Ward: From Elysian Fields to Lafayette Ninth Ward: From Lafayette to lower limits of city Tenth Ward: From Felicity to First Eleventh Ward; From First to Toledano, upper limits of city "By 1870, the city of New Orleans and Orleans Parish annexed the City of Jefferson, which had been part of Jefferson Parish. This area became the Twelfth, Thirteenth, and Fourteenth Wards of New Orleans. [There are a couple of wards which will be published at a later date] The poll tax was, in 1868, a requisite to voting.... It was leveled on all male inhabitants of the State over the age of 21. It was not to exceed $1.50 a year. Proceeds were earmarked for school and charitable purposes. It was finally abolished in 1934. Addresses were omitted in this book but can be found on the original microfilm.
