ELMO ALVAREZ DeGRUY SR Elmo Alvarez DeGruy, Sr., a retired merchant seaman, died Sunday of lung cancer at his home. He was 76. Mr. DeGruy was a lifelong resident of New Orleans. He spent 23 years in the merchant marine. He also was a former agent for Peoples Life Insurance Co. and a maintenance worker for St. Cecilia Catholic Church. He was a member of the National Maritime Union and a parishioner of Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Survivers include his wife, two sons, a daughter, two brothers, two sisters, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren A Mass will be said Saturday at 11 am. at Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Visitation will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. Burial will be in St.Louis Cemetery No. 3. A photo was with the article.
