    3. Lou - The Orleans Parish Birth Certificate records on the Orleans Parish GenWeb site shows her parents as David Withmeyer and Josephine Brasholz. However, It is interesting to note that there are 4 siblings and on one of them the mother is listed as Josephine Hanle. Here is the hyperlink: http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/orleans/vitals/births/index/nobiwiwn.txt The marriage records on the site shows that David Withmeyer, age 26, married Josephine Brasholz, age 19, on 6/14/1888 as documented in Vol. 17, p. 736, of the Orleans Parish Marriage Certificate records. Neither are listed as being born in New Orleans, though before 1870 the records show that people did not regularly register births with the public records (and not always afterwards). 3. Lou - I can help a little with the information I have. Lucien Floristien Degruy (1/8/1822 - 5/15/1894) was the son of Pierre Verloin DeGruy and Francoise Azelie St. Amant. He married Adelina Theresa Price on 1/7/1842 and had at least one child, Florestine DeGruy. It is possible that he had more, but birth and baptismal records for the 1830s through 1860s are still incomplete. I do not think he is an immediate ancestor of yours, though it is likely that he is a cousin of one of your ancestors. My records show that Lucien Horace DeGruy was the son of Antoine Onesime DeGruy (abt. 1810-10/16/1888) and Louise Evaline Cauvin (abt. 1815 - 1/18/1893). I am not sure how Antoine Onesime was related to the rest of the DeGruy family. Lucien Horace DeGruy had at least five siblings. If you wish, I can send you a .pdf file of the descendants of Antoine Onesime. Her birth is shown on the Orleans Parish GenWeb Archives site as on 2/5/1890 as documented in Orleans Parish Birth Certificates, Vol. 102, p. 372. This was one of the names recently made available to us from the chart prepared by Aida Degruy and recently loaded on the DeGruy Family Web site as Dufouchar de Gruy Family Tree. She is buried in the Withmeyer plot along with a few others of differing surnames (Graff, Brasholz, etc). I spotted her while I was visiting the Valence Street Cemetery in New Orleans last Fall where I have German great grandparents on my mother's side buried there. Have been meaning to share but forgot I have them. Renee will post on the DeGruy website. I discovered the grave while browsing the Valence Street cemetery grounds on Oct 31, 2009. The adjacent plot is Wm Burst. Coincidentally Burst is my great-grandmother Afra Burst's family surname, but I've not heard of William so don't know of any connection, but suspect there is. Afra is buried with her husband Simon Rapp in the Rapp plot which is not too far from the Burst and Withmeyer plots. fyi, Mary Lynn This is a "discussion" list. 3. In answer to your 'puzzling question', part of the reason Benjamin Henry Latrobe moved to New Orleans was to re-group financially after making a bad investment in Fulton's steamship business. He died three years to the day after his son did, in New Orleans, at his residence, Clouet Street and the river. Unfortunately the City does not honor Latrobe with a monument there. The site would be a wonderful location for a riverfront park. An architect could easily follow the rich description which Mrs. Latrobe gave in her wonderful letter home, describing the house, gardens, gallery, etc. At that curve of the river, the prior occupants could have seen from their gallery the cannon flashes on the night of December 23, 1814, when the Carolina opened fire on the British, who were making their first night's camp just two miles downriver, to start Gen. Jackson's most important (and greatly overlooked) pre-emptive strike which put the British in disarray and secured the eventual victory on January 8, 1815 known as 'the' Battle of New Orleans. -----Original Message----- From: degruy-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:degruy-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Eugene Ray Sent: Saturday, June 26, 2010 2:00 PM To: degruy@rootsweb.com Subject: [DEGRUY] JEFFERSON-LATROBE masonic tie >father of american architecture left his prestigous wash. position FOR FEVER-RIDDEN NOLA POST >was it a masonic mission or a DESIRE FOR SUGAR WEALTH $$$ two degruy sugar mill sketches HISTORIC N.O. 3. Dear Degruy Cousins, The message below appeared on another Rootsweb discussion list. Please consider signing this petition. Please pass it on for others to sign who may not be on our Degruy list. Merci, R ************************************** Please sign the petition to save the French degree program at Southeastern University in Hammond, Louisiana. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/1/keep-the-french-department-at-southeastern-louisiana-university It was only 1 or 2 generations ago that French was a major language here in Louisiana. The system beat it out of our parents and grand-parents and made them learn English. Many Louisianans still speak French, and as such the impact of French on our state has been incalculable. Other than Quebec, Louisiana is the largest French speaking area in the Western Hemisphere. There's too much Acadian & Cajun culture to be lost by eliminating these courses. More schools should offer these courses instead of trying to get rid of it. I might understand a school in someplace like Kansas eliminating French (nothing against Kansas), but not here in Louisiana. ****************************************

    3. Listers, I sent a couple of photos to Rennee on Sunday morning of the grave site for a Barbara DeGruy (Feb 5, 1890-Oct 25, 1949). Afra is buried with her husband Simon Rapp in the Rapp plot which is not too far from the Burst and Withmeyer plots. fyi, Mary Lynn

    3. Evening, Bob Mhoon has kindly shared two files with us. Here are his words: "This is the Contract (translation) for the July 1806 marriage of Sieur Achilles Berard and the Demoiselle Marie-Hortense Boutte. She was the daughter of Francois Cezare Boutte and Marie Therese Degruis. In my home town (New Iberia, LA) there is Hortense St. that was named for the bride. It ended directly behind our family home. I've also attached a news clipping discussing the fight for oil rights in Barataria though it probably is of little interest to the group. You are free to share this information however you like." I've uploaded this to the Photo Section of the website, even though they aren't photos. There are quite a few cousins on this list with Boutte-Degruy connections. So there will be quite a few who will be interested in this materia. As [bad] luck would have it, Barataria and oil are in the news again right now.... but not exactly in the same context. Thank you, Bob, for sharing these files with us. R
