    3. Wonderful information, Helen. Thanks so much! I have something on these folks.... not a whole lot. Let's see who else responds and then we can figure out how we can confer and fill out the empty spaces. Renee PS... you might chat with David about this. He's spoken about them frequently. I think he knows where the houses they lived in are. On 9/22/10Wednesday 8:26 PM, LESTER KENDRICK wrote: > The information following is from the Succession of Mrs. Foucher De Circe'. 1. [DEGRUY] Foucher De Circe' Family No. 2
    2. LESTER KENDRICK
    3. 4. After having established their domicil in Paris, they removed from Louisiana and transferred to France the larger portion of their property. They bought a large and valuable chateau, (called Harseucourt) [line right through the name of the chateau, misspelled?] near Paris, where they resided during part of the year, up to the time of their death. They also have in France their family tomb where both have been buried according to their own directions. 5. Louis Frederic Foucher had resumed in France the title of Marquis de Circe which belonged of old to his family. Their only son having been baptized under the name of Louis Pedre Foucher, L. F. Foucher instituted judicial proceedings to have the baptismal record amended and by decree of the French Court, the addition of the title "de Circe" was recorded on the margin of the original inscription. L. F. Foucher was a registered elector on the list of voters of his "Arrondissement" in Paris and was allowed to exercise the political rights of a French citizen. 6. The debts and charges against the estate of L. F. Foucher de Circe', in Louisiana, were as follows: Taxes and expenses of administration and cc as per Tableau (in 33,781 of 2nd Dist. Ct.) of Dec. 20, 1870 duly homologated Taxes and Expenses: $24, 196.05 Services of attorney of Succession (E. Bermudez) subsequently paid $5,000. And the Drainage Tax and Charges on the property in the Parish of Jefferson $55, 368.10. Say, Eighty four thousand five hundred and sixty four 15/100 dollars $84, 564.15 It is admitted that the amount of drainage tax is correctly stated, but that it was now paid by the Sucession and the State does not acknowledge it as a debt due by the Succession.

    1. [DEGRUY] Pay Attention, Cousins: Upcoming at HNOC - Carl Ekberg
    2. Degruy List Administrator
    3. Cousins, Pay attention those of you who live in the New Orleans area! You have a chance to meet Carl Ekberg, PhD who was professor emeritus at Illinois State University and who is an expert in the French in Colonial Illinois. He is the scholar who has written so much about Fort de Chartres, Kaskaskia, etc. I am in his debt for the many times he has helped me with my own "Illinois Country" research . He has given many suggestions to help us research our Antoine. He is the one who brought the famous "lead plates" into our consciousness and informed us that our Antoine buried one somewhere in Missouri. We owe Professor Ekberg a great debt. I hope if you attend this event you will thank him personally for all he has done for our research. A list of many of his books can be found at the end of this email Here are some details, or you can go to the HNOC site. *Saturday: Two screenings of "Under These Same Stars"* <http://thnoc.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=Ne75sgAuABL-----AAQ83A> * Saturday, September 25 9:30 a.m. & 1 p.m. Williams Research Center 410 Chartres Street Admission is $5. */Reservations: (504) 523-4662 or //wrc@hnoc.org/ <mailto:wrc@hnoc.org>/ / The Collection will present two screenings of the film "Under These Same Stars---The Céladon Affair" on Saturday at the Williams Research Center. Based on historian Carl Ekberg's book /Stealing Indian Women/, "Under These Same Stars" tells the story a mixed-race hunter's need for companionship and of a slave woman's choice between her children and an opportunity for love and freedom. It is based on a French colonial story from 1773. After each screening Ekberg, Dan Johnson (director of the film), Bob Streit (screenwriter, actor, and associate producer), and Molly Johnson (associate producer, costume director, and production coordinator) will discuss the film and take questions from the audience. Published Works: Early Modern Europe: A Book of Source Readings (with Herbert Harvey Rowen), 1973 The Failure of Louis XIV's Dutch War, 1979 A Cultural, Geographical, and Historical Study of the Pine Ford Lake Project Area, Washington, Jefferson, Franklin and St, Francois Counties, Missouri (with Edward P. Jelks and Joan I. Unsicker), 1981 LaSalle and his Legacy: Fenchmen and Indians in the Lower Mississippi Valley, 1982 Colonial Ste. Genevieve, French Roots in the Illinois Country, Patrice Press, 1985 An Account of Upper Louisiana, 1989 Excavations at the Laurens Site: probable location of Ford De Chartres (with Edward B. Jelks and Terrance J. Martin), 1989 The Legacy: A Survey of the Historical Architecture of the Town of Normal (with Ann Patton Malone and William D. Walters) 199 French Roots in the Illinois Country: The Mississippi Frontier in Colonial Times, University of Illinois Press, 1998 Francois Valle and His World: Upper Louisiana Before Lewis and Clark, University of Missouri Press, 2002 Louis Bolduc: His Family and His House (with Anton J. 1. [DEGRUY] Records obtained from the Saint Genevieve Archives
    2. Degruy List Administrator
    3. Hi, Well I went ahead and uploaded [in the Files section] the 9 pages of the Aufrere record in the Ste. Genevieve Archives collection and the 3 pages of the De Gruis record. The Aufrere pages are a lot clearer than the Degruis. I haven't been able to "fiddle" with them in Adobe because Adobe isn't allowing me to make any changes. The only think I can think to do is to scan the hard copies I made and try to make those more legible. That will take some time and due to my travel schedule, I just wanted to get something uploaded. Here are some notations: De Gruis record in Ste Genevieve Archives There are 3 pages having to do with the De Gruis record found in the Ste Genevieve, Missouri Archives . The citation simply says: From Page 27] Mines -- Miscellaneous - Archives from Ste. Genevieve Courthouse Year #1787 No. 34. Notations say: De Gruis et al Concerning concession, others having rights are Bte. Vallé, Pratte & Bolduc These three pages having to do with De Gruis case regarding Mine La Saline and the records were found in a microfilm collection in the St. Genevieve Library in the St. Genevieve Community Center The originals are in the St. Genevieve Courthouse, and I do not think the originals are available to the public. The boxes the microfilms were found in read: "Ste. Genevieve, Missouri Archives 1756-1930 They were found in the top drawer of the 2nd column of drawers. ---------- and also: Version:1.0 StartHTML:0000000206 EndHTML:0000005578 StartFragment:0000002576 EndFragment:0000005542 SourceURL:file://localhost/Users/RHB/Desktop/Aufrere%20record%20in%20Ste%20Genevieve%20Archives.doc Aufrere record in Ste Genevieve Archives There are 9 pages having to do with the Aufrere vs Tellier case found in the Ste Genevieve, Missouri Archives: These nine pages having to do with Aufrere vs Tellier case were found in a microfilm collection in the St. Notations say: Roll 19, Aufrere #7 F 304 From [Page 39] Aufrere vs. Tillier in re debt Year 1775 No 7 These are French colonial and territorial records of the District of Ste. Genevieve and Ste. Genevieve County records and court records. Approximately one-third of the documents are dated 1756-1804; the rest are dated 1805-1930. An itemized inventory accompanies the microfilm. A hard copy book which indexes these records exists. I found it in the St. Louis County Library Special Collections. Surprisingly the Ste Genevieve Library did not even know of the existence of this book. More information on these records can be found at http://whmc.umsystem.edu/invent/3636.html#min Because of difficulty operating the equipment I did not have time to photocopy anything more than the Aufrere records and 3 pages of a document having to do with Antoine "de Gruis". There may be other records there, but that will have to be saved for a future date. ------------- R
