Renee How far back do you have copies of the Terrebonne Lifelines bulletins? I have 1982 on to present copies. Judy Perrin
Hi, My October issue of New Orleans Genesis just came - in time for November. Anyway there is an article in it entitled: "Ball of Confusion: Celestin Glapion and the Glapion Family of Louisiana" submitted by Barbara Trevigne. [This is a very long article, abt. 21 pages.. so we can only pick out a few items.. There are several mentions of Degruys: Mrs. Pierre Verloin de Gruy, Verloin de Gruis. Confusing to me are the names associated with the Glapions which seem reminiscent of some of the names associated with the Degruys. Wonder if there is anyone out there who understands this enough to explain it to me. [I should call David.....] Anyway, what do you think of this.... some names/titles listed affiliated with Glapion: page 304: Charles de Glapion, Sieur du Mesnil "According to Stanley C. Arthur's, "Old Families of Louisiana," the first Glapions to appear in the early eighteenth century in Louisiana were brothers; Chevalier Christophe de Glapion, Sieur du Mesnilgauches, who was born circa, 1741, and Charles de Glapion, Sieur du Mesnil. Their parents Charles, Seigneur du Mesnilgauches, and Jeanne Thiboust, were from the French parish of Saint Scholastique in Normandy. Both brothers were distinguished French colonial officers. The family surname was shortened and later appeared as Duminil, Duminy de Glapion, and finally as Glapion...." In the next paragraph they mention "Christobal de Glapion whose son, Louis Christophe Duminy de Glapion, cohabitated with the Widow Paris, Marie Laveaux." On the next page "On 31 January 1785, Christobal de Glapion married Jeanne Sophie LaLande Ferrier. Christobal and Jeanne Sophie produced twelve children. Sacramental records identify their children as Jeanne "Juana" Coulon Glapion, [Mrs. Pierre Verloin de Gruy].... [not giving all the rest but that name repeats in various forms "Elizabeth Hortense Dummini Glapion [Mrs Thomas Casey]..... Ysabel Duminy de Glapion... Next paragraph: [pg 305] "On 15 November 1801, an agreement between the Chevalier Christophe de Glapion and his son Christobal Dumini de Glapion, contracted in the presence of Joseph Delhome and Verloin de Gruis, formed a partnership for the purpose of growing sugar cane. However, Christobal Dumini de Glapion did not live long enough to reap the finanacial succes sugar produced; he was buried 10 September 1804." The top of the next page [pg 306] continues the similarities... with one possible typo... In all probability when the senior Christobal de Glapion was buried at age thirty-nine in St. Louis Cemetery No. One, Jeanne Sophia Lalande Ferrier and her children were already living in New Orleans. By 1817, the family was living in Faubourg Treme' number 25 Hospital Street. That address is currently the 1100 block of Governor Nicholas. The Widow Glapion, Jeanne Sophie Lalande Ferrier remained in Treme' until her death at eighty on January 27, 1835. Her surviving son, Christophe de Glapion, served as executor of her estate. Other heirs included her daughters, Heloise Glapion Durel; Arthemise Glapion Tricou; Hortense Glapion; Mme. Andry and Debuys [Renee: think that should be DeGruys?] by representation of their mother Sophie Glapion; and Madame DeGruy and Brandon by representation of their mother Jeanne Coulon Glapion." And one line of the following paragraph: "...or Louise Darcental whose spouse was Louis Foucher." That's about all we can deal with in this email.... but I just wonder about the Sieur du Mesnil and the Duminy and Dumenil. What is the significance? Is it simply that they came from some of the same areas of France as our DeGruys? BTW, to focus on that "Madame DeGruy and Brandon": Pierre Verloin DeGruy[sometimes Dumini, Dumenil, DuFouchard] [son of Joseph Verloin DeGruy and Marianne Couturier] was married first to Jeanne de Glapion and when she died in 1805, he remarrried to Marie Francoise Daspit St. Amand. One of their children Pierre Huxelle [P H] Degruys Verloin married first Julie Eveline Boutte and then Marie Cecilia Cunningham. And this Marie Cecelia first was married to Paul Antoine Brandon, son of Robert Robelard Brandon and Jeanne Zulme' DuFouchard Verloin DeGruy [who was the daughter of Pierre verloin DeGruy and Jeanne de Glapion So you get an idea of how intertwined and confusing it all is. Actually it's rather exhausting and so..... I'm signing off. Welcome to anyone who can make it all more understandable! R

Well, this is a good chance to straighten out our understanding, Mari. Who do you have as the children of Alphonse Gaiennie, Sr. and Marie Alix Fazende.... and..... Do you have the parents of Alphonse Gaiennie, Sr. and the names of all his brothers and sisters. [I know I don't have this information.... and there may be others out there who would like to know.] Thank you very much. I'm always happy when we are able to straighten out some of our confusions! I don't have the son's name either, but A. F. was Alphonse Gaiennie, Jr., son of Alphonse Gaiennie, Sr. and Marie Alix Fazende. A. F. Sr. was the brother of my grandfather, Louis Raphael Gaiennie, Sr. Mari Jayne Gaiennie Burke
Anyone know who this is? 18 November 1905: A son was born to Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Gaiennie yesterday. So which son is this? [I'm assuming A. F. is Alphonse Florestan... but I guess that could be wrong. This is found on page 41 of Terrebonne Life Lines Summer 1987 Vol 6 No 2
Hello Raymond, Thanks for your kind message of Oct 29th. I was so happy to review the good factors of your life, in contrast to the profound experience of your tumor and surgery. I am reminded of our good days together at LSU in 1964-1966 when you won the Alcoa aluminum award, in my fourth year design class You and Louis Acosta, who won the Portland Cement scholarship to France, were certainly outstanding students and i am not surprised to learn of the fine professional accompolishments since then. Your profound spiritual book, "God Smiles For Me" has been a great read here, and is now circulating among friends. If you come to California, as part of your book signing schedule, please plan on visiting us in San Diego. Warrick's , in nearby La Jolla, is an excellent book store that hosts many book signing events, Writing about one's life is a vital and educational experience, which I have been active in over the past five years. This year I am organizing my professional archive as it is destined for the Historic New Orleans Collection. One cannot seperate one's life and work and, in this final quadrant of life, it is a profound spiritual process. I apologize for the shortness of this message. I had actually composed a long and complete message for you that was lost last night in a malfunction of my MSN communication system. I have ordered a new system and when it arrives I will re-compose that message for you. I send to you, and your family, my very best wishes for this autumn season, and look forward to further communication with you. I try to stay in touch with former students from LSU , Tulane and San Diego State. Quite a few of our former students have gone on to excellent professional careers. Sincerely, Gene Ray

Well, thank you, Jerry! I can honestly say that I'm always happy when someone is helped by our research! That's why our Degruy list was created... to be of service as we take this walk together through the genealogical halls of time :-) Now.... for those of you with Celestin ancestors here are a few more.... The following information refers to a son of Jean Celestin and Felicite Martin, the Jean Celestin who married Pamela Marie deGruys. This information is found in Vol. 20 No 2 of Summer 2001 Terrebonne Life Lines on page 140: "Jean Celestin [Jean] was born circa 1832 a native of Montmeyan, Dept. du Var, France. He married Pamela Marie deGruys, daughter of Joseph Verloin deGruys and Charlotte Falgout, on 22 Mar 1854. He died on 27 Jan 1885 at Thibodaux, Louisiana. The church record says he died the 28 of January, that is probably a burial date. He was buried at St. Joseph Cemetery, Thibodaux, Louisiana. In August 1876 he was a baker. His bakery was at the corner of Patriot Street, Thibodaux, Louisiana. On 23 Jan 1885 he wrote a will. Emile E. LeBlanc, Clerk of Court; Evariste Maronge and Theophile Thibodaux witnessed the will. It was written at his house in Thibodaux because he was very ill. He bequeathed everything to his wife, Marie Pamela Verloin De Gruy. Pamela Marie Degruys was born on 23 Mar 1832 at Louisiana. Children of Jean [John] Celestin and Pamela Marie deGuys all born at Louisiana were as follows. 5 i. Marie Celestine Celestin was born on 11 Dec 1854. She married Marius Rapon on 3 Jan 1871 at Thibodaux, Louisiana. In this marriage record, her mother is recorded as Pamela Verloin in stead of DeGruys. 6 ii. Letitia Felicia Celestin, born 8 Sep 1856; married Jules Boudreaux 7 iii. Jean Albert Celestin was born on 7 Jun 1859. He died circa 19 Sep 1903 at New Orleans, Louisiana. 8 iv. Joseph Remi [Henry] Celestin was born on 6 Jul 1861 9 v. Charles Amedee Celestin, born 26 Mar 1864; married America Margaret Hanagriff 10 vi. Emee Celina [Aimee] Celestin was born on 25 May 1866 11 vii. Georges Alphonse Celestin was born on 21 Jan 1868 12 viii. Felicien Cesar Celestin was born on 12 Nov 1869. He married Robertha L. Hanagriff on 27 May 1895 at at [sic] the home of C. A. Celestin, Houma, Louisiana. They were married by Rev. Mr. R. H. Prosser, Episcopal Minister. Felicien died on 6 Oct 1898 at Bayou Black, Louisiana, at age 28. He died of consumption 13 ix. Felix Edouard Celestin was born on 10 Feb 1872. He died on 6 Dec 18987 at New Orleans, Louisiana, at age 25. He was buried at St. Joseph Cemetery, Thibodaux, Louisiana. 14 x. Cora Elodie Celestin was born on 30 Sep 1875. She is not listed in the 1880 census nor has any other reference to her been found. It is presumed she died young. Subsequent generations are listed but are not being included here as I saw no further or specific references to DeGruy.

Good Morning, Just a quick message to let you know that three pages found in the Attakapas Gazette XVII, #3 Fall 1982 have been uploaded to our Myfamily site under the "Reviews" Section. Several of our Degruys are listed along with other allied families. I've posted them there for your convenience. They are found in an article on page 120-123 entitled: "Revised Index to St. Mary Parish Estates 1811-1900" It is continued from XVII, No 2. The article was edited by Mary Elizabeth Sanders. The article lists the estate number, the year opened and the party involved. Should any of you obtain the original data, please share. Renee
