Re David's comment at the bottom of the entry having to do with the interment record of Dona Juan Glapion: David Perrin's marginal notes: Renee, you are right, I just found this. 1st Marriage St. Louis #1 Cemetery Pierre Verloin DeGruy & Juana Glapion Second Marriage Azelie St. Amand I am not sure that this Pierre Verloin DeGruy [who was married to Azelie] is the same as Don Pedro Verloin Degruis.... In another place I had Pedro [Pierre Dufouchard Verloin] Degruy..... This is one of those things that I think have yet to be "proved." I'm not sure how to do this.... but I think we need to mark this in some way.... as needing further checking.... If anyone has a definitive records on this... please let me know. Thanks, Renee

The Village of Chartres in Colonial Illinois, 1720-1765. LaCompagnie des Amis de Fort de Chartres, 1977. p556-558] "C. C. Robin, whose Voyages dans l'Interieur de la Louisiane ... was published in Paris in 1807, gives an interesting account of the development of the sugar industry in Louisiana. He states that in 1802 there were seventy-five sugar plantations and a number of sugar refineries and describes the design and construction of Verloin de Gruy (deGruise)'s ciruclar sugar mill, which was probably located on the plantation that the 1834 Zimpel map shows on the west bank of the river and that John H. B. Latrobe sketched in the same year. 'All construction work is done by the Negroes on the plantation, and it must be admitted that some of the Louisianans show much intelligence in this work. Here is a remarkable example: The San Domingan who directed the construction of the first sugar houses built the grinding mill in a hexagonal or octagonal form. A Creole named De Gruise, a descendant of one of the French officers who came out at the founding of the colony, without instruction, but by native ability, found that an angular edifice was both displeasing to the eye and wasteful of material, but circular construction was too difficult for the local colonial laborers. M. De Gruise had heard of la Halle in Paris (the central market of Paris now known as Les Halles) and from descriptions of it, he had built in brick two leagues from the city, on his house, a rotunda so like it, that on seeing it I expressed astonishment. I was even more astounded upon learning how M. de Gruise had conceived and executed the work.' In his journal Latrobe describes the visit to a sugar plantation about two miles above New Orleans, at which time he had 'an opportunity of learning something of the manufacture of this artilce.' He states that 'the mill that I have drawn in my sketch book ... is one of the old-fashioned ones, and, I should judge from its appearance that it had been erected some fifty or sixty years ago [150-1740] . It was originially intended for horse power in grinding the cane. Steam has been introduced now, and the buildings put up since are very different in their appearance from the one which I have drawn.' Latrobe's pencil sketch show a circular domed structure that may well be the one mentioned by C. C. Robin some thirty years before." [Robin, C. C. Voyages Dans L'Interieur De La Louisiane. Paris, 1807 IN Green Fields: Two Hundred Years of Louisiana Sugar. p69 & 70.] "In 1741, a young French officer with an artistocratic name, Antoine Valentin de Gruy Verloins Dumesnil Fouchard de la Folie, arrived at the 'Establishment' as contemporaries called Fort de Chartres. Before 1741, almost nothing is known about De Gruy, as he usually signed his name. In that year, he first appeared as a witness on a bill of sale for a stone house near Fort de Chartres. He certainly was a member of the large De Gruy family from the area around New Orleans... Perhaps he and other members of his aristocratic famliy, down on thier luck in France, had come to Louisiana to make their fortunes. Enough information exists about Antoine's activities in the Illinois Country to verify that business, not soldiering, constituted his principal occupation. Virtually all of the officers assigned to Fort de Chartres supplemented thier meager military incomes with business enterprises--fur trading, lead mining or salt manufacturing..." [Ekberg, Carl J. Antoine Valentin de Gruy: Early Missouri Explorer. Missouri Historical Review 76.2 (1982): 136-150.]
Well, you haven't heard from me in a while and you'll be gettin slim pickins until the first of November when the first part of my "other" work will have ended.... But... today in the mail... it was Christmas.... genealogical gifts from David Perrin......and I want to share..... So, I'll type in a little info and you can create a folder for Antoine Valentine and Marie Therese.... As I send entries, you can separate out these various entries into different folders. Eventually when we get a web site, we'll transfer everything there. As I send this material, if you have discrepancies please let me know and give me what you have and I'll note your comments. This reads [not in its entirety]: "K-177a [H717] Was present Mr. Antoine Valentin Degruyverloin, Lord Dumenil Fouchard, Ecuyer de la Folie, officier of a company of infantry of the detachment of the Marine garrisoned in Illinois, residing in this town of Kaskaskia, parish of the Immaculate Conception....." David notes that "He signed his name: De Gruysverloin [with the two dots over the 'y']" David notes that he got this photocopy from the HNOC on Royal Street in New Orleans. David notes that: "He [Antoine] was a duc in France." Another note says that: "Duc de la Folie is a high title in France. His father was also a duc + as his mother was a Marquis"
I found a book yesterday entitled "Abstracts of St. John the Baptist Parish Civil Records 1757-1798. Does the Conrad book run from 1757 through 1803? Is the Conrad book an English translation? The book I found was compiled and translated by Judy Riffel and published by the LeComite des Archives de la Louisiane. I began copying all references to degruy and found that I had about 38 pages before I had done 1/2 the copies. If you book has the same info, I will not continue to copy the rest of the entries. Probably 90% of the entries I found with the degruy name were where Verloin was a witness to a document or a surety at a probate or a liquidation of an estate. They were not the kind of info that would lead to further knowledge of the family. It would appear, from the number of times he served as a witness on legal documents, that he was a respected member of the community. A look at the index of the book I used shows why genie research is such a challenge. I was surprised at the spelling variations on the degruy name. Particularly since it was the same few people with spelling variations. Some of those variations are probably due to the translator's interpretation or the interpretation of the person who handwrote the original documents. I didn't realize the content of the entries until I got them home and began to read them. I was interested to see the same names over and over in the entries. Most of those surnames are still common here. Note the appearance of the name Andreas Draeger (now Tregre) in those extracts; he is the "father" of all the Tregres on the German Coast. I have the book "A Tregre Family Reunion". It begins with Andreas and runs through my husband's father's generation. If any of you come across a Tregre in relationship to your degruys, please post a message here and I will look up your Tregre and send you whatever info is in the book. Carolyn Tregre
Well, I got a kick from Celine's message about the entry saying Degruy was Dutch.... because not too much earlier, I got the following message from Katrina deGruyther, who is Dutch. A while back I had seen the name Degruyther.... probably on Rootsweb and I sent an email to her asking if she thought there was any connection between Degruy and Degruyther.... It took a while but she answered [below]..... and she didn't seem to think so.... but shortly thereafter we got Celine's message and it just seemed like a weird coincidence... so I'm passing it along..... don't know what it means as I have thought of the Degruys in light of being French and originating in Switzerland... but not having a Dutch connection... R. Hi, I don't believe that the Degruy and DeGruyther families are related. I guess that's not to say that somewhere along the line, the name was shortened, perhaps for easier pronounciation? Although I have found no link to date, there are many DeGruyther's lost out there somewhere. My family name- DeGruyther is Dutch. I have only been able to go back as far as the mid-late 1700's (off the top of my head) The spelling has changed and varies. We have been traced to Netherlands, India, Canada and Australia just to mention a few. If you think there could be a link somewhere, let me know, and I can give you some more information to go on. Hi Renee - I asked about the Fazendes. It was my great great grandmother who was Marie Alix Fazende. She was a direct descendant of Jacques Fazende. You also referred to three Conrad books, and I am embarrassed to say I'm not familiar with them. Please email the titles and I will get them immediately. Again, thank you for your wonderful guidance and hard work for all of us. FYI This data disk CD#525 includes the following sources of information: Introduction The Canary Islands Migration to Louisiana The Settlement of the German Coast Census Tables for Louisiana, 1699-1732 Louisiana Census Records 1810m 1820 Vols 1 and 11 Gulf Coast Colonials The New Orleans Fr3ench 1720-1733 Old Families of Louisiana Louisiana Troops 1720-1770 Louisiana Colonials: Soldiers and Vagabonds Louisiana Soldiers in the War of 1812 The other 2 cd's I've got are Heritage Quest 1870 and Louisiana Marriages 1718-1925 Heritage Quest is just an index [doesn't show the actual census pages] and I can't seem to be able to print from it.... no matter, it's very disappointing and I can get into HQ online for all the censuses [including census images] not just this one, so I'm sorry I bought it. If anyone who can't get online HQ wants to buy it, I'll sell it for $2. less than I paid. Have to be on PC to use it. I usually use Mac, but borrowing my husband's computer to use these Family Tree data cd's. I'm going to be out of St. Louis for a week starting tomorrow so won't be able to look up anything till I get back. Renee

I knew Thelma had written for NO Genesis...I was sad to hear that she had passed away, but comforted by David's comments that maybe as many as 4 people had copies of her work..... My question is... did she have any information in her vast research on the Degruys in particular....If so, is there any way that her heirs could submit this to NO Genesis for "posterity"? This is my concern.... folks like David and the DeGruy cousin David mentioned from where... Lafayette?.... have much information in their personal collections.... in varying stages of organization and disorganization. Is it possible to get all this miscellaneous information into a form acceptable to New Orleans Genesis and preserve it for posterity before it gets lost or thrown out by someone who may not care about genealogy? Your thoughts? Renee Isabel wrote: >Hi List, >In reference to Thelma Coignard James's books. Hi All, Had another long conversation with David today [not as long as the last one.] I just Have to start taping these... There is no way I can keep up with him.... just can't write that fast... and when I try, later I can't read what I've written! He talked about branches of the family... some taking the Dufouchar/d title, some the Verloin. He talked about the books of information Thelma Coignard [now deceased] had.... (I sure hope this information makes it way to New Orleans Genesis for the sake of posterity) He talked about the Marquis de Circé [in France, Cirre] [1585, title still held] and the relationship to the Fouchers... who had the plantation which is now Audubon Park [as Shelley just reported on] ... The Fouchers, he said, were first cousins of the Degruys... Basically when you think Foucher... think Foucher de Circé [if I understand him correctly] He talked about the relationship of the name De Gruy to Gruyn and deGuise He said he looked up the name Huxelle in some ancient book he owns and there is some relationship to a title... and a Nicholas du Blé, [consul and minister to the Cardinal de Fleuri, confessor to Louis XIV]... [ Remember I was wondering where that Pierre Huxelle was coming from.. that I couldn't find Huxelle anywhere else in the Degruy genealogy.... Anyway... this was all kind of general information and nothing in it has any "source" material for documentation. So I suppose we should have a file in which we put all our "Musings".... and let that hold undocumented data.... R.
Hi Shelley, Thanks so much. Great information. I'm not sure what was in your attachment. I couldn't open it. However, generally, we are not supposed to put attachments on our messages to the list. That is why I'm investigating having our list website... so we can send attachments to that. However my non-genealogy work ... which will last till early Nov. ... has precluded my doing anything with that. Will try as soon as I can. On another matter, I purchased a cd from Ancestry... La Marriages.... and for the next several entries, I will try to send some data from that. Some will mention Harangs and Fazendes.... if anyone has a specific interest in that, I can try to accommodate. I'll do this as I have time... Hope all is well after the hurricane, that - thank God - [and Our Lady of Prompt Succor - as an Ursuline alumnae I tend to send prayers in that direction as she is said to have saved NO on more than one occasion! :-) ] Renee
Note that one says "Widow, spouse #2". Often when a woman remarries the index carries both her surname by the first husband and by the second husband also. I am certain that is what this is. Carolyn
