    3. Hi All, I'm forwarding a message from Robin Butler Daviet, a new subscriber to Degruy-L. On behalf of everyone at Degruy-L, welcome, Robin! Renee -------- Original Message -------- Subject: Le Raconteur announces the DeGruy list. Thank you for being here. Date: Sat, 18 Dec 2004 17:08:27 -0700 From: Robindaviet@cs.com To: DEGRUY-L-request@rootsweb.com Dear Renee and all other DeGruy family participants, Hello. My name is Robin BUTLER Daviet. I am the wife of Leslie Louis DAVIET II. I learned about your Family Name List from my December issue of Le Ranconteur. I have been a member of Le Comite des Archives de la Louisiane for several years now. Judy Riffel is a true gift to the genealogy community, expecially those of us researching in Louisiana. I live in Arizona. Thank heavens I have the internet to supplement my searches. We live in a terrific age. Thank you Renee for taking on the awesome task of administering this Family list forum. It is quite a task. I know because I help with another one that is a surname from my side of the family tree. My husband is a direct descendant of Jean Baptiste Antoine Valentin, Ecuyer, DEGRUY VERLOIN, Lord Dumenil Fouchard, Duke of France, Ecuyer, del la Folie (as noted from your list discussions) and his wife Marie Therese AUFRERE. His lineage, beginning with his paternal grandmother is as follows: Alice Valerie GUIDROZ b. 15 Sep 1884, McCloud, Lafourche Parish, LA [birth located in Lockport Church records Vol. 2 pg 108]; d. 20 May 1966, Raceland, Lafourche Parish, LA; m. 14 February 1909, LA to Louie Etienne DAVIET. Alice was the daughter and eldest child of Joseph Saulet GUIDROZ and Adelle Louisa CHAUVIN. Joseph Saulet GUIDROZ b. 23 May 1856 (have second date, 20) Lafourche Parish, LA [birth located in Lockport Church records Vol. 1 #201]; d. 14 April 1931 of throat cancer; m. 29 January 1883 in Lafourche, Louisiana [located in Thibodaux Court House Marriage Records Vol. 24 #16] to Adelle Louisa CHAUVIN. Adelle was the daughter of Emile Louis CHAUVIN and Marie Josephine PART. Adelle and Joseph were 3rd cousins once removed, connected through the FALGOUT family. Joseph's parents were Athenore/Athinore (other variations are found) GUIDROZ and Charlotte Celima/Celina VERLION DEGRUISE. Charlotte Celima/Celina VERLION DEGRUISE was born 30 July 1829 in Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish, LA; m. 13 February 1847 (have second date, 12) in Thibodaux, Lafourche Parish, LA [information found at Thibodaux Court House, Marriage Records, Vol. 5 #2 and in Thibodaux Church Records Vol. 3 pg 7] to Athenore/Athinor(e) GUIDROZ. Charlotte Celima/Celina's parents were Joseph Damien VERLION DEGRUISE and Charlotte FALGOUT. Joseph Damien VERLION DEGRUISE (also appears in records as Duminic Joseph/ Dominque/ Dumeni/ Dumenil) b. 1 September 1785, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, LA; d. by 2 April 1853 [noted in son Joseph's marriage record listed in SLR Vol. 3 pg 170]; m. 13 July 1812, Assumption Church, Plattenville, Assumption Parish, LA to Charlotte FLAGOUT, daughter of George Beaumont (Antoine) FLAGOUT and Marguerite Marie CHAUVIN. [The mutual FLAGOUT ancestors of Adelle Louisa CHAUVIN and Joseph Saulet GUIDROZ are George's parents, Louis Marcel FALGOUT dit Beaumont and Marie Jeanne CASTAN.] Joseph Damien's parents were Joseph VERLOIN DEGRUIS(E)/DEGRUY and Marianne/Marie COU(R)TURIER. Joseph VERLOIN DEGRUIS(E)/DEGRUY b. 8 March 1752, New Orleans, Orleans Parish, LA; m. before 1771 to Marianne/Marie COU(R)TURIER, daughter of Pierre COUTURIER and Marie Francois LEKINTREK dit Dupont. Joseph's parents were Jean Baptiste Antoine Valentin, Ecuyer, DEGRUY VERLOIN, Lord Dumenil Fouchard, Duke of France, Ecuyer, del la Folie and Marie Therese AUFRERE. The information I have on Joseph and his father Antoine and mother Marie are from internet postings and various books, all secondary sources. I have no primary sources for these two couples. If you have any questions or wish more data, please contact me. Sincerely, Robin Butler Daviet

    3. For anyone interested, here are DeGruy entries in the Orleans Parish Poll Tax Rolls 1869-1870 I'm not sure what we can glean from this other than the person listed was still living during these years and we can find out what ward they are in. Evidently the second number refers to a page number... and on the page would tell us whether or not they paid their poll tax.... so limited information... but, here it is for what it's worth: Degruy, Charles 7-19 DeGruy, Charles 5-26 Degruy, Edouard 5-73 DeGruy. F. 5-26 DeGruy, Francis 6-20 Degruy, H. 7-19 Degruy, J.V. 5-21 DeGruy, Joseph 5-73 DeGruy, Louis 5-25 DeGruy, O. V. 6-19 Degruy, P.O. 7-21 no Dufouchars or Verloins listed First Ward: From Felicity to Thalia Second Ward: From Thalia to Julia Third Ward: From Julia to Canal Fourth Ward: From Canal to St. Louis Fifth Ward: From St. Louis to St. P:hilip Sixth Ward: From St. Philip to Esplanade Seventh Ward: From Esplanade to Elysian Fields Eighth Ward: From Elysian Fields to Lafayette Ninth Ward: From Lafayette to lower limits of city Tenth Ward: From Felicity to First Eleventh Ward; From First to Toledano, upper limits of city "By 1870, the city of New Orleans and Orleans Parish annexed the City of Jefferson, which had been part of Jefferson Parish. This area became the Twelfth, Thirteenth, and Fourteenth Wards of New Orleans. [There are a couple of wards which will be published at a later date] The poll tax was, in 1868, a requisite to voting.... It was leveled on all male inhabitants of the State over the age of 21. It was not to exceed $1.50 a year. Proceeds were earmarked for school and charitable purposes. It was finally abolished in 1934. Addresses were omitted in this book but can be found on the original microfilm.

    2. Degruy List Admin
    3. From Renee in St. Louis: To: Members of Degruy-L and other Genealogy Email Pals: If you are seriously interested in family history research, you might want to read this email posted to LAORLEAN by Margaret Miesterfield. I did what she suggested just now ... and contacted our Missouri senators and asked them to insert the line described below.... You might want to also: Today I received this information from our local genealogical society in Michigan. Thought everyone should be aware. Margaret Miesterfeld HR10, which was mentioned in the 13 October issue of RootsWeb Review, has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The amendments suggested by David Rencher in his letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, were NOT incorporated into this legislation. Thus, the terms of HR10 will now be considered by the Senate, as part of S.2845. If S.2845 becomes law, as now written, family historians will face some real challenges in attempts to obtain birth records, even on long- deceased individuals. Specifically, what genealogists need to do is suggest to their lawmakers the addition of Sec. 3061(b)(1)(A)(iii) that would read: "who is alive on the date that access to their birth certificate is requested." This addition would clarify that the legislation (soon to be law) applies ONLY to birth certificates of CURRENTLY LIVING PERSONS. If you do not know your U.S. Senator's e-mail address, you can find it at <http://www.senate.gov/> http://www.senate.gov/ This bill can be found online at <http://thomas.loc.gov/> http://thomas.loc.gov/ Put in S.2845 (in the bill number window) and then select item No. 3; and go to Subtitle B--Identity Management Security; Chapter 2--Improved Security for Birth Certificates. Previously published in RootsWeb Review: 8 December 2004, Vol. 7, No. 49.

    1. death certificate from Celine
    2. Degruy List Admin
    3. Good Morning, I'm very appreciative this morning. When I awoke I had waiting for me on my computer an email from Celine who has emailed me a copy of Emil Verloin DeGruy's death certificate. This was in response to a previous email, that you may remember my having sent, which mentioned that I would begin to collect in a binder for now primary data and then eventually post to a web site. What I hope to do soon is to list the certificates I already have and then see how many we can fill in. I also have Judy Riffel at the La Archives starting to do work in this area.... copying certificates and sending them to me. Soon I will send a list of those records which I already have so we don't have to worry about those. It would save a lot of money and time for others to follow Celine's example; however, I do understand that this is the busiest time of year. Now here's a "methodology" question for you and I invite your opinions and comments...... What about "secondary" sources....? like the fat Albert Robichaux book with Birth, Marriage, Death records....? There are, for example, 5 or 6 records in there for Steven Degruy and his family.... The records seem to give every bit of data.... witnesses, grandparents, etc. Should we let these "count" for now and work on the records that don't appear in such data sources as Robichaux and ANOSR [Archdiocese of New Orleans Sacramental Records]......? That would save $. Or should I bite the dust and order even these documents? Isabel? Celine? Bonnie? .... all you "hard core" researchers... what do you think... Ok... gotta go get my car fixed. Renee

    3. I got a kick out of this quote from one of the two web sites I notified you of in a previous email: ------------------------------------------------------------------------ It is surmised that Latil must have sold the portion of the rear of the Brazillier plantation south of Bayou Road which he owned, a triangle in shape, to Pierre Couturier. Couturier had been the surgeon for the Fourth Company of the Swiss Regiment of Karrer, the only permanent military company stationed in New Orleans during the French regime. Many of its officers founded Louisiana families, notably Gregoire Volant, whose daughter married Francois Pascalis de La Barre and whose son was executed by O'Reilly for instigating the revolt against Spanish authority in 1768. When he wasn't practicing surgery, Couturier imported furs and deer skins from western Louisiana and exported them to France. Couturier married Marie Francoise le Kintrek, the daughter of Jean Joseph Le Kintrek (called Dupont) and of Anne Marie Pose of New Orleans. Marie Le Kintrek must have soon died, permitting Couturier to marry into the Chevalier family for Couturier's brother-in-law after 1751 was Chevalier, storekeeper for the King in Illinois. Couturier's widow, Jeanne Chevalier, remarried Santiago Lamothe. After his death, she sold the property to Gabriel Peyroux in 1778. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This reminded me of Antoine Valentin... who, although he was stationed in the military at Fort Chartres and doing whatever was involved in his military service was also on the side wheeling and dealing in real estate and running his lead mine operations..... They were great multi-taskers, weren't they! ;-) Renee

This list, prepared at the height of the French and Indian War, shows all officers serving detached infantry duty under the Naval Ministry, except for the 4th company of the Swiss Regiment of Hallwyl that, at this time was the responsibility of the War Ministry....This list represents the high water mark of French troops in Louisiana as the rosters show diminished troop concentrations after 1758. Within five years of the writing of this roster, there would be only four companies of French troops in the province. 1. Entries from the parish registers of churches near Ft. Chartres and Kaskaskia
    2. Degruy List Admin
    3. For your information, I now have copies made from the microfilmed records of several churches in the Illinois area around Fort de Chartres and Kaskaskia. I'm not going to try to transcribe the French... again handwriting which is a bit difficult to read... Here's what I have: From Immaculate Conception of Our Lady in Kaskaskia, Il. Abbreviated entry in English says: De LaCroix, Dussault s/Dussault de la Croix - chevalier of the order of St. Louis, Mayor of the town of Gap in Dauphine - & Dame Marie Francoise Borel to Marie Theres Aufrere, Widow of Antoine de Gruys, lieutenant of the troops of the marine. 18 Feb 1760 The French is a lot longer. If I ever get a full translation, I'll post it. A birth record for a Pierre Joseph who was born to Marie Therese Aufrere's second husband Abbreviated entry in English says: Dussault de la Croix, Joseph and Marie Therese Dufresne dit Michel [Aufrere?] Pierre Joseph 17 Nov 1760 born; 22 Jan 1761 baptism [Note that Marie Therese is referred to by her maiden name and not by DeGruy; however, the marraine is listed as Hyacinthe De Gruys I also have some entries for La Lande but haven't figured out if these are "our" La Landes. Keep in mind that Marie Therese Aufrere's parents were Antoine Aufrere and Marie Mathurine Guillmot dit La Lande... and Marie Maturine's parents were [I believe] : Jacques Francois Lalande Guilmot [Guillemet] and Madeline Dupont. Now there is a Jean Baptist La Lande dit Guillemot and Charlotte Marchand listed in the records of Sainte Anne Mission and Church of Fort Chartres, Illinois and they had a child named Louis born 25 Feb 1744, but I'm not sure these are definite relatives of ours... so I made the copy and will tuck it away until things become clearer Now, do any of you know exactly when Marie Therese Aufrere and her second husband [Joseph Dussault [Dusiau] de la Croix] moved back to New Orleans? When do they show up there? Also, I have as a siblings to Marie Therese Aufrere the following: Antoine Alexandre, Francois, Paul Antoine..... does anyone have anything different than this? I have as Marie Therese and Joseph Dussault De La Croix's children: Pierre Joseph, Adelaide, Balthasar. This would be in contrast to the children of Marie Therese and Antoine Valentin: Marie Francois Hyacinte, Jean Baptiste Valentin, Joseph Verloin, Antoine Dufouchard, Pierre Dumini, Marie Therese and Hortense.... This suggests that Marie Therese Aufrere had a combined total of 10 children from her two marriages. Again, does anyone have anything different? ok.. 'nuff for now. Renee

    3. Hi, I've been talking with Judy Riffel in Baton Rouge and we are working out an arrangement where she will do look ups for me at the Archives. Here's my thought: I want to start a Degruy binder which will simply list alphabetically, all Degruys.... and include only primary data: Birth, Marriage, and Death records. If I can ever get this web site going, we can eventually list them there. In the mean time we will be collecting the beginnings of a Degruy database... which will include factual information. I invite you to participate, if you are so inclined. You can send me photocopies of any B, M, D records which you may have in your collections. I will post these to the list as I receive them. This way, there won't be any need to duplicate someone else's efforts. As soon as I have time I will give you a list of the BMD records I already have so you won't have to duplicate these. I will also let Judy know so that she won't duplicate any records. This will greatly save time and $$$. Send a message to degruylist@earthlink.net and I'll send you my snail mail address. Prefer to do this in a less public way than an internet mailing list. Again, we will start to publish these when we have a vehicle to do so. I will be much more comfortable with all the Degruy data once we have some primary records to back up all the material that is floating around out there in the ethers.... won't you? If you think there is anything to discuss about this, just let me know. Renee in St. Louis ps Right now I have 8 people listed as receiving the list messages and 11 as receiving digests of Degruy-L. However, I don't know how often Rootsweb updates this information, so these numbers may be incorrect. I know that a couple of folks have signed off as they go on vacation and will resubscribe when they return. The point is that I've been sending messages to Degruy-L and copying some other Degruy researchers. If you are getting our messages twice, let me know and I'll send only to the list. If you are not getting the list messages and want to, please subscribe. If you can't figure out how, let me know and I'll subscribe you myself. It would be easier on me to be able to send to just the list.

    1. trip to Kaskaskia, Fort de Chartres and Randolph County Courthouse
    2. Degruy List Admin
    3. Hi All, Had a trip that was both great and miserable today. Great because I got to see places I'd been reading about for so long. Miserable because it alternated between pouring and heavy rain the entire driving trip. Also, all places except the Courthouse turned out to be closed [Closed Monday and Tuesday[, so I did not get to go through the Pierre Menard home... or the artifact museums.... Made $26 worth of copies at the courthouse!!!! I was very disappointed because the Clerk of Courts people led me to believe I'd find BMD records there and I didn't. Our people lived in Illinois earlier than anything they had, including successions and land grants. The earliest land records were from 1795, or so. What I did do was copy tons of material from the Kaskaskia Manuscripts [English translation] Most interesting items I'll list below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ 59:3:8-2 {take this to be March 8, 1759} "Sale at public auction of an old house and lot at Kaskaskia, belonging to the late De Gruy Verloin and his wife Marie Therese Aufrere. Bids also taken on April 1 and April 8, 1759, when property is sold to Joseph Chauvin Charleville for 2910 livres. III, 29/H326 [Don't know what those last citations refer to as there is no explanatory material on the microfilm] Comments: This indicates that Antoine has died by March 1759. This is much earlier than the July-Sept 1759 found in other records. He does appear in some records from 1758.... However 1758 is not nearly as "active" as previous years. David Perrin thinks he was killed in the French/Indian war.... so maybe he was on assignment out of town during that "inactive" period. The last "living" entry is from January 12, 1758. So from January 12, 1758 till he has become the "late Degruy" a year and a couple of months are silent so far as entries in the records. There are at least 68 references citing Valentine and a couple for Marie Therese. Also mentioned is Marie Maturine Guillemot dit La Lande [Marie Therese Aufrere's mother], Antoine Aufrere, Jacques La Lande [Marie Therese's grandfather]. There is a reference to a De La Houssaye [Housset] (this pertinent to you, Jerry?), a Joseph De Guire, a Marie Rose Deguire, and a Pauline Deguire La Rose.... Not sure about whether those last 3 or 4 are pertinent to our family. There are a ton of references to a Jean Baptiste Deguire... not sure about him either. Just got a phone call from David and he has a documentation for another record saying Antoine died between July and September 1759.... So... I don't know how to reconcile these two differnet and yet documented dates... but, there they are.... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Now here's another interesting one because it mentions the minors of widow Marie Therese Aufrere DeGruy.... but doesn't list them.... 62:6:17:1 [so June 17, 1762] "Sale of a stone house, outbuildings and lot at Kaskaskia and also a house, shed and equipment for working salt at La Saline, by Joseph Du Sceau and his wife Marie Therese Aufrere, acting for themselves and as guardians of the minor children of Marie Aufrere and her first husband, the late De Gruys Verloins, to Cadet Daniel Fagot La Garceniere, of Kaskaskia, for 38,500 livres. Richard [minors]; Chenie [minors]; Widow Chesnier; Girardeau; La Chance; Danneville; Jean Lagrange; Lagbuxiere. 3 PP See: 63:12:12:1 H449 Comments: I don't recognize those minors... Where are Marie Therese and Antoine's children??????? ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Note that in all the records pertaining to Antoine, he is Never named Jean Baptiste Antoine....Here is how he is named [each taken from a separate record]: Degruyverloins Degruise [De Gruy], ensign in the garrison of Fort de Chartres De Gruy Antoine Valentin Degruy Dumenil Fouchard De la Folie, of Fort de Chartres Degruy Verloins De Gruy Verloins [this page has an interesting reference to a Pierre Louviere Damour Dechofour, of Kasaskia....(wondered if that was a spelling of Dufouchar)] Degruy Verloins, Degruy Verloin, Antoine Valentin De Gruy Verloins Dumenil Fouchard De La Folie De Gruy Antoine Valentin de Gruy Verloins Dumenil Fouchard De La Folie, of Fort Chartres Antoine Valentin de Gruy Verloins Dumenil Fouchard De la Folie Antoine Valentin De Gruy Verloins Dumenil Fouchard De La Folie, of Fort Chartres De Gruy, De Gruy, Degruy Verloins, [Here's one with Jean Baptiste Deguire in the same record as Degruy Verloins] Antoine Valentin De Gruy Verloins Dumenil Fouchard De La Folie at Kaskaskia.... and then another sentence saying "Verloins will supply all the materials....." 1. The 1762 Pay Book tells us that there are more than just 1 Degruis in Illinois in the 1700's!
    2. Degruy List Admin
    3. Greetings: One of the items I researched while in Urbana, with a follow up in our local St. Louis County library, is a very interesting article in the Illinois State Genealogical Society Quarterly, Vol. 31 #4 Winter 1999. It is written by Robert de Berardinis, OMPL, who lives in Houston. This pay book is very interesting because it lists two other Degruis in the service three years after Antoine's death. On page 236 of the Illinois journal article it lists: In the Company of de Noyon: Pierre degruis [Riflemen] who received 12.15 [livres] in July, August, September October and November for a total of 63.15 livres. Keep in mind that this is 1762. Then on page 240 of the article, it lists in the Company of Belnos: Jean Valentin degruis Cadet.... who received 4.10 livres in July.... but nothing in Aug, Sep, Oct, Nov, for a total of 4.10 livres.... [We might ask... why just one month? Did he die? Was he sent elsewhere?] So...... we know that Antoine was not the only Degruis in the area. Keep in mind that Marie Therese Aufrere remarried Joseph Dussault De La Croix in 1760. How long did they remain in Illinois before returning to New Orleans???? Also: David Perrin insists that Antoine Valentine is buried between July and September of 1759 at Fort De Chartres [Not in New Orleans]. Some have him buried in St. Louis Cemetery #1, but as that cemetery didn't open until 1789, this cannot be correct. St. Louis Cemetery #2 opened in 1823. Note that Melanie Gaudin [JB's second wife] is buried in St. Louis Cemetery #1 in Jean Baptist's [son of Antoine Valentine] tomb. Thought you might find this all very interesting..... Renee
