These deaths are of special interest since they occurred during the period of Union occupation of New Orleans following the city's fall in April 1862. The data in the notebook were transcribed by members of NOVA (the New Orleans Volunteer Association) and made available to New Orleans Public Library for inclusion on its web site. I sent the following on the 20th... but because our little list is so "inactive" ... that is, no one is sending any messages or asking any questions, the digests are not going out.... So I'm sending this again in the hopes that it will spawn a digest. Those of you who are subscribed in the list format have already received this, so pardon the repetition and just delete. 2. Dear Rene and Celine: Today at the Jefferson Parish Library I found a book by Charles R. Maduell, Jr. entitled "New Orleans Marriage Contracts 1804-1820 Abstracted from the Notarial Archives of New Orleans" This wonderful tome give the name of the bride and groom. In addition it gives the names of their mothers and fathers, the birthplace of bride, groom, and both sets of mama and daddys. In addition it tells if the bride or groom is a widow(er) and the name of the deceased spouse. It also has the date of the contract and the volume and page number where the document is located and the name of the Notary. I found a contract between Joseph Zenn Toudeau and Celeste Clely Saint Pre(sic). Her mother and father are Pierre St. Pre(sic) and Ortense(sic) Verloin Degruy. I also found a contract between Jean Baptiste Degruy and Melanie Godin. Jean Baptiste's first wife was Elisabeth Monbereau and he is the son of Jean Baptiste Leploin(sic) Degruy (deceased) and Marie Offrer (deceased) I copied the inside cover of the book to give you the title, author and publisher. I did not think to bring the call letters but may be able to locate them next time I go there. Rene: I also copied the obits on the list you sent a while ago. Those obits in the Daily Crescent & Times Democrat will have to come from NOPL next time I go as Jeff Parish doesn't have that film. I will put the obits and the marriage contract info in the mail tomorrow to Rene. I believe that there may be another book covering the years after 1820 by this same author. I will look for it when I go to the library next trip. Carolyn Tregre

    3. Wow, Carolyn, we all owe you a great debt. Thanks for all your wonderful help! You are "An Official Genealogy Angel" ! I just checked the online catalog of our county library and came up with this: R 976.335 M183N New Orleans Marriage Contracts, 1804-1820 : Abstracted From The Notarial Archives Of New Orleans / by Charles R. Maduell, Jr. <http://199.181.178.210/search/aMaduell/amaduell/1%2C1%2C11%2CB/frameset&FF=amaduell+charles+r&9%2C%2C11> Maduell, Charles R. New Orleans : Polyanthos, 1977. 137 p. ; 23 cm. So I know I can take a look at this the next time I'm at the library..... which won't be until the ice they are predicting for tonight melts enough to make driving possible!!! 2. I know you thought I had forgotten you but I haven't. I copied the Marriage Contract between Pierre St. Pe and Hortense Degruys. I am mailing it tomorrow. These documents are VERY hard to read as the document on the back of the page bleeds through and copies on the front. As nearly as I can see, you need to read every other line to know what the first page says and do the same with the second page. I didn't have the info with me to copy the other two docs. but am putting it in my car so I can get those in the next few days and send them. Please feel free to do as I told Rene. Typewrite the document in French here and put a ___________ where you cannot read the words. I can go back and try to fill in the blanks for you. Note on the index sheet her name is spelled Ortancer (the H is dropped as an British person would speak). The Clerk's office now has customers leave requests for copies and no longer allows customers to make copies for themselves. Pages 96 and 97 seem ok. Page 98 seems to have the top cut off. Read what you can and I will get that recopied. I am not certain that page 99 is part of your documents. But I cannot read enough of the French to tell (mostly I can recognize proper names). So if that has nothing to do with your docs. please ignore. Carolyn Tregre

    1. Marie Aufrere's Inventory
    2. I am mailing tomorrow copies of what I hope is the inventory of Joseph Dussault. Note that in the index, the name Dassault is spelled Dusseau. These old records are hard to read but I think you can make them out. If you cannot make out all the words, typewrite here the French and I will run back to the courthouse and see if I can fill in the blanks for you. Leave an underscore________ where you cannot read so I know where to look. I cannot understand French but I can look at the written words and just copy what is missing. Actually, I find that I can read A LITTLE of the French just by knowing a few French words and knowing what a succession usually says. There are 5 pages. The pages with the inventory were smaller than the regular pages in the bound book so the third, fourth anf fifth pages have writing at the bottom that belongs to a different record in the book The parts with the bright white background are the pages that pertain to the inventory. If , after you interpret this, is isn't the document you are seeking, please let me know and I can search further. Carolyn Tregre

    3. Dear Email Friends, I received this on my Schooley-L list and liked it so much, I asked Keith if I could forward it to you. He has given us his permission.... so feel free to send it on. Thank you, Keith. You've put into words just what I am feeling this Christmas Eve. Happy Holidays, Renée in St. Louis KeefusSue@aol.com wrote: Friends, family, fellow travelers...... With the hopes and wishes of the holiday season upon us I pause and reflect on the joys that our searches have brought upon us all. While some have had their heartstrings pulled with the closing of a chapter to our family trees, and others have had the joy of announcing a new chapter starting. We all find heartfelt joy in the myriad of ways that we support each other in our endeavors to fill in the blanks. With each page we turn we not only are reporting our info but remember to also glean anything else off the pages of history that will be a help. At times reading the lists I never see something about my branch then, in the words of Emeril "Bam!" a date, a place, a book appears. Thanks to all of you who enjoy the hunt and share with the rest of us. And know that as I continue to search I will do the same. May this time of spiritual renewal bring you the wishes you so richly deserve, May you find that missing picture with names and dates, may you find that long sought after document. May the politicians realize we are just trying to find our roots and not trying to steal identities. May that little bit of extra info be the piece that mends fences and that someone is there to enjoy and read your tome and go WOW we really were a cool family. So with what ever religion you follow or don't, may you find inner peace and joy in this time of reflection on the coming of the new year. Respectfully Keith W Brown

    2. Rene: I cannot read French but I am going to take a copy of your translation of the info in the Pierre Degruy will with me back to the source. Armed with what you have written in French, I MIGHT be able to read from the original microfilm the part you cannot read on your copies. I will write down what it looks like to me and then send it on to you and maybe you can use that to fill in the blanks. Carolyn

    1. Microsfot Office Word foreign language accent marks
    2. Dear Renee, Thank you for the assistance. I tried using your MAC tutorial, but it indeed did not work on my Windows based system. I use Microsoft Office's Word for my gathering and storing of information. You encouraged be to go ahead and research what I needed to, to learn how to create accents in that system. I still have not figured out how to do it in my e-mail system yet, however. I am going to have to work on that or write my e-mails in Word and paste them into my e-mail messages. Thanks for the encouragement and little nudge I needed to finally take care of this. I have been putting this off for a long time. Sincerely, Robin Butler Daviet

    2. Dear Renee, I know somewhere on my computer it must explain how I make accent marks, but I have never been able to figure it out. How do you make the marks you showed us? I would love to see a short tutorial about this on the site. By the way, I just reread my orginial message. Please forgive my typos. I was in a bigger hurry than I thought. FALGOUT is always spelled as shown here. Sorry about that. Sincerely, Robin Butler Daviet

    3. Hi, I have a two page document which Carolyn very kindly sent from the Orleans Parish Recorder of Wills, vol. 2 pg. 9-10. It's one of those oversized microfilm copies with streaks all over the page. It is written in a small French script. It is difficult to read. It is the will of Pierre Duminy Degruy. My French isn't all that good but I'm pretty sure that this line says that he had never been married. I'll also include the section where he identifies himself. "Je me nomme Pierre Duminy Degruy natif de la [illegible] age [hard to read: O? enverol? cinquante huit and ? Fils legiteme de ? Sieur Jean Baptiste Verloin [might be Duminy, hard to read] et dame Marie Therese Aufrère. Je déclare n'avoir jamais étè Marie." [note that I now know how to add the grave accent.... it's option then same key,, upper left as the cedilla and then the "e"\] Also have an obituary for Azelie St. Amant DeGruy, which reads: ST. AMANT - At half past 12 A. M. Wednesday, April 15 (1874) AZELIE ST. AMANT, widow of the late Pierre Verloin DeGruy aged 75 years. The friends of the family, and those of her sons, P. H. L.F. and J. C. DeGruy, and of her sons-in-law, Wm. Salomon and C. H. Forno are respectfully invited to attendher funeral from her late residence, 266? Melpomene street, on Thursday Evening, 16th ?? at 4 o'clock." Now this one is important to me personally because I believe her son, P. H. Degruy is my GGG Grandfather.... But I have so many different possibilities for names for him... and this is where I am so confused. Is P. H. for Pierre Huxelle? Is it for Pierre Henry? Is he Pierre Henry Huxelle? [remember that he appears on the birth record of one of his children as "Henry" And what about other references to him [using names like Pierre Dufouchard Verloin... David Perrin has him listed as Pierre Verloin Degruy]. How can I be sure he really is the same man as my GGG Grandfather? Anyone have any ideas. His siblings are: Lucien Florestan and Joseph Camille... Marie Zelina Verloin is married to Charles Henry Forno. Where is Solomon coming from? I have Adelaide Verloin married to Alphose Desforges, Luisa Verloin married to ??? Nicaud. Somebody must have gotten remarried, but who? and François Verloin married to ???? Brown. Where are these folks and who is married to Salomon? If anyone has information, please let me know. R.
