    1. RE: Francois Verloin DeGruy information withdrawn from web site - Update
    2. slideaus
    3. Regarding the two different Francis/Francois DeGruys: The New Orleans Times-Democrat of October 28, 1901 has the following obituary: DE GRUY – On Sunday, Oct. 27, 1901, at 8:20 o’clock p.m., FRANCOIS VERLOIN DE GRUY, aged sixty-two years, son of Theophile Verloin DeGruy and Felicite Anais Foucher. The friends and families of De Gruy, Marmillion and Rigob are respectfully invited to his funeral, which will start from the residence of his brother-in-law, 1129 Baronne Street, between Calliope and Clio streets, at 3 o’clock this (Monday) afternoon. The death certificate reflects similar information except it does not specify his parents nor that the address at which he died was his brother-in-law’s house, not his. The New Orleans Daily Picayune of August 16, 1900 has the following obituary: De GRUY – On Wednesday, August 15, 1900, at 5:30 o’clock p.m., FRANCIS V. De GRUY, aged 46 years, a native of New Orleans, La. The relatives, friends and acquaintances of the family are respectfully invited to attend the funeral which will take place This (Thursday) afternoon at 4 o’clock p.m. from the late residence of the deceased, No. 4853 Magazine street, near Upperline. This Francis V. DeGruy appear to be the son of Francis Joseph Verloin DeGruy and Felicite Felice Foucher. Note: the death certificate lists his age as 48 years, and noted that he was a broker who resided at 4853 Magazine Street. The two are first cousins through their maternal relationship. Both are grandsons of Antoine Foucher and Marie Melicente Saulet. -----Original Message----- From: cmj@acsalaska.net [mailto:cmj@acsalaska.net] Sent: Thursday, July 28, 2005 12:50 AM To: DEGRUY-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: Francois Verloin DeGruy information withdrawn from web site I just posted a photo of the Famille Francois deGruy tomb to the website. 3. Based on the dates on the two death certificates, I will check the obituaries in the microfilms of the Times-Picayune on and shortly after those dates. That may clarify which Francois Verloin DeGruy died in 1900 and which one in 1901. I am out of town on a business trip for the next few days, but I will try to get this done in the next week to 10 days. I have attended several reunions in the past and made one large descendant chart for the occasion. Kinkos can print them out from a PDF file generated by Family Tree Maker. I would be happy to do this. I also know of some other de Gruy descendants here from other reunions, such as the Duplantier reunion. We had a Destrehan reunion at Destrehan Plantation, and the Duplantier reunion at Magnolia Mound Plantation. I would have to think about where a de Gruy reunion could be held..... Jerry Freyder

    3. HOW YOU KNOW YOU'RE AN ADDICTED GENEALOGIST You're addicted... * ...when you brake for libraries; * ...if you get locked in a library overnight and you never even notice; * ...when you hyperventilate at the sight of an old cemetery; * ...if you'd rather browse in a cemetery than a shopping mall; * ...when you think every home should have a microfilm reader; * ...if you'd rather read census schedules than a good book; * ...when you know every town clerk in your state by name; * ...if town clerks lock the doors when they see you coming; * ...when you're more interested in what happened in 1697 than 1997; * ...if you store your clothes under the bed and your closet is carefully stacked with notebooks and journals; * ...if you can pinpoint Harrietsham, Hawkhurst and Kent on a map of England, but can't locate Topeka, Kansas; * ...when all your correspondence begins, "Dear Cousin"; * ...if you've traced every one of your ancestral lines back to Adam and Eve, have it all fully documented, and still don't want to quit.

    1. Francois Verloin DeGruy information withdrawn from web site
    2. R. Hotard, Degruy List Administrator [Please do not send me anonymous, forwarded, chain emails. Thank you.]
    3. Hi, Based on comments by Isabel I have removed the commentary I inserted on the Degruy web site under the Death Certificate for François Verloin DeGruy to read as follows: "This is the death certificate of François Verloin Degruy who died 2 October 1901 at the age of 62. It looks like he lived at 1129 Baronne [did I spell Baronne right? Can't read the handwriting on record] Street. Orleans Deaths Volume 125 Page 1138." The reason I have withdrawn that information is that we need to get some confusions straightened out before information is placed on web site. For example: ---------------------- Note on the web site that we have records for 2 different François Degruys, one dying in 1900 and one dying in 1901. We have to be sure we know who is who and which is which before we insert additional information. ........ Following is my transcription of some notes given to me by David..... These notes are typed in a script style and David's handwriting is superimposed over many of the names and dates in his effort to correct them. I am not sure where the typed version came from, but I will ask David next time I talk with him; however, a note on top says: "My Uncle wrote this. He has his father dead before He married his mother. I did it over. David".... now this may be David's "Uncle Frank," but I need to verify. Whoever he was this "Uncle" must have had something wrong with typewriter because every time he writes "children", it comes out "childred" Again, I am submitting this to Degruy-L..... for discussion or for you to check with your records, but not putting anything on the web site until it is supported by "records" Page begins: Verloin de Gruy (Francois Verloin deGruy -- down to six generations -- to April 1966) [Francois: crossed out and Joseph inserted to read: Joseph Verloin deGruy married Heloise Saulet. They had eleven [scratched out to read 12] childred. [sic] Their names were; Francois Verloin deGruy ["Jr" is scratched out] -- married Felice Foucher. Died August 15, 1900 Their names were; Alfred, James, George, Felicie, Julia and Francois III [David writes in margin: 2 died; another note says "Francois II died young."] Francois Verloin deGruy III married Alix Gaiennie [David inserts "his cousin... and April 22, 1892"..(for their marriage date), they had four children. [David's note: Frank died Aug. 15, 1900] Their names were: [David inserts "Marie"] Estelle Verloin deGruy [David inserts Born 1893...2/26/93] married to Eugene Johannan -- No childred [sic] [David inserts: Estelle died Sun. 1. Oct meeting
    2. Renee: I believe the branch libraries in Jefferson have meeting rooms you can use for no charge. There isn't the advantage of on-site food but at the Jefferson location, there are a number of restaurants within a 5 minute drive of the library. I am going to a meeting in Jefferson today and will pass by the branch and see how large the meeting room is. Post a note on the LAORLEAN site and ask someone on the list there who is in the JPGenie society to contact you off-list. You could then ask one of the repliers to get you in touch with the Society and ask them if they would sponsor your meeting. Also, some of the newer motel along Veterans Highway probably have suites where there is a bedroom on one side, a living room in the middle and a bedroom on the other side. You could rent one of those and two different attendees could use the bedrooms and share the cost. There is a motel, Quality Inn and Conference Center on I-10 and Causeway Blvd. This is a mid range place and the rooms are reasonably priced. They have a meeting room on the Mezz floor called the Parish Club. They may let you use it without charge if you have a group of attendees who book their rooms at the Quality. Our High School class has had a number of reunions there and they have let us use the Parish Club over a weekend for no charge. Again, there is a restaurant on premises and other eateries are within 5 minutes walking distance. There is also a Hampton Inn-Causeway. If you book your rooms there, they may let you have the meeting room at no charge. No restaurant on premises (I don't think) I willl get back to you on the room at the Jefferson Highway branch as to size and availability. Carolyn Tregre

    1. OCTOBER 15 Degruy Mini Reunion Meeting
    2. R. Hotard, Degruy List Administrator [Please do not send me anonymous, forwarded, chain emails. Thank you.]
    3. Hi, Well here is the update our our potential Degruy Family Mini Reunion Meeting..... I check several hotels and their prices range from $150 - $300 per meeting room... without any refreshments. Jefferson Parish Public Library is $50 an hour but you get the previous half hour and the subsequent half hour at no cost... so basically $50 for 2 hours. Also... you can carry in refreshments from the little cafe.... so that way folks could pay for their own food and bring it in and that would alleviate our worrying about collecting checks for menus... etc....of course there wouldn't be any wine.... And I would think that for fun we could bring in some "nostalgic" items.... like crackers with Gruyere cheese.... what would a Degruy Family mini reunion be without that.... Or... what about Couturier Goats Milk Cheese.... Anyone have any other ideas????? Let's get creative....... Also... I think we should open this to anyone interested or bearing the name... for example, can I tell my Hotard uncles about it? Another Big Thing.... if we can get some Genealogical Association to co-sponsor it....like the Jefferson Parish Genealogical Assn, we could have it for the whole day at no cost.... Does anyone have connections....she made it very clear that this was very possible... to get the room for nothing... maybe we could invite someone to do a little talk on searching for the Degruys..... Any of you in any associations out there? Anyway I'm going to hold the room because, as expensive as it may be, it doesn't compare with the hotels. We could try for a free room in a bank or something... but, as I am in St. Louis, this is Really Hard for me to do..... so, again, unless you have connections..... Once we are settled about the place we need to put our heads together about how/if we want to "organize" the meeting..... Like have some special presentations...... So.......how about some input from you all... Other than meeting in order to put faces together with email addresses and chat with long distant cousins.... what would you like to hear about?????? Some family stories? What props can we bring.... maps showing plantations????? Photos.... What can we share.. for others to take home? Our personal tree starting with ourselves and going back 2-5 generations..... only items we are pretty doggone sure about...? Maybe a photo of us with info about ourselves.... We'll need name tags.... We'll also need a head count.... Please let us know if you think you will be attending October 15...... time?????? 10 - 12????? 1:00-3:00 ?????? Have to decide that too in order to reserve room.... Looking forward to hearing from you.... ps Michelle Gonzales' email is bouncing back... anyone know how to reach her?
