TRAFFIC CRASHES BLAMED FOR MORE FATALITIES Young Man Dies After Auto Collides With Fire Engine Samuel Anthony DeGruy, 27 years old, 1825 North Robertson street, was injured fatally Friday morning when an automobile he was driving at Burgundy and Clouet streets collided with a fire engine which was en route to a barge fire at the Clouet street warf. The death of DeGruy, which Dr. C. Grenes Coles, coroner, said resulted from hemorrhage and shock following a skull fracture. A filling station operator and his assistant were booked with issusing a brake tag to a car in an improper condition at 3 p.m. Friday, as a result of the accident; it was announced by Henry Werner, city brake inspector. Werner and Patrolman Thomas O'Sullivan booked Charles Zimmerman, 39, 803 Taft Place, proprietor of a service station at 1800 North Claiborne avenue, and his assistant Haney Jame, Negro 31, 9034 Palm street, at the Fifth Precinct. Werner said that inspection of the brakes on DeGruy's car showed they were "in very bad shape and there were no brake bands at all, although a brake tag had ben issued recently for the machine. Police said Pumper No. 10 of the city fire department was responding to the riverfront fire at 5 a.m. when the fire apparatus, which was in charge of Chauffeur Albert Frere, 40, of 2605 Frenchmen street collided with DeGruy's car. DeGruy, according to police, tried to swerve his machine to avoid the crash. New Orleans Public Library Times Picayune Newspaper March 15, 1941, p1, c5 & p2, c5 Helen Kendrick
