    3. A helpful book on this subject is Pett-Conklin, Linda Marie, Cadastral Suveying in Colonial South Carolina: A Historical Georgraphy. Louisiana State University, PHD 1986. Ann Arbor, MI: University Microfilms International, c 1987. I obtained a copy through interlibrary loan. There is a discussion of compass orientations on plats. She says there were no official policies in SC - so the surveyor had great control. There is a section on compass orientations used by the surveyors. She says that in the earliest settlement, land was laid out within the spatial framework of the counties and afterward, the townships. Marilyn
