Hi Annette and Listers, I have found that the appearance of the plot is often a perfect match, or at least mighty close, to the outlines of one parcel or a cluster of parcels on a modern tax plat map. I've done this for 2 counties in Pennsylvania. I would imagine that it wouldn't work in one of the states with Range, Section, and Quarter layout. I find that Penn State's library (near my home) has the plat books for most counties in PA. You might find a similar collection in other large university or state libraries. Once you can correlate the old plot to a modern one, you can follow up via the tax office for owner, or other similar sources, and then find that person's street address...... This also will allow you to place the plot on a standard modern map such as a contour map. The 2 counties where I found this true were: Centre Co, Penna; and Washington Co, Penna. When I did those counties, I was using Black Oak Mapper, which is no longer available. It's a very streamlined package that is similar to DeedMapper and was designed for DOS use. It would not allow you to place several plots on one screen page or hard copy page. However, you could save as a graphic file and then import into another piece of software and put several together. That was the dark ages of land plotting, and DeedMapper is the present day! Ellen, What parts of WashingtonCo have you been working in? And how far back have you gone? I'm interested in the beginning (1782) as my ancestor, John Robb, was one of the first settlers, and have a copy of the original patent map for his township which I hope to fill in some time working forward from the earliest deed books.
