    1. [DMU] In a straight line?
    2. Hi I see many patents with no direction except a meander but they give a distance "in a straight line" or "in a right line". Is the distance they give: 1) some sort of summation of the "legs" of the meander if made into a straight line? or 2) a guess at the straight line distance from the beginning point of the meander to the end point? When deedmapper computes one leg of a patent is there any way to tell what the direction & distance computed were? I don't find myself very good at pointing and moving the crosshair and getting an accurate distance. Since the program "knows" the direction & distance precisely, it would help to just get those numbers. Having lots of fun with DeedMapper - working in Louisa and parts of Hanover, Albemarle, Fluvanna & Goochland. Jerry Sullivan

    3. I found this in the archives of the newsgroup: "I solved the problem - I use the 5000 ft/inch and 150 with many images and it has always worked fine. What was causing the problem was that my files were in the root directory, as soon as I moved the .jpg, .dat, .mbl, .mbk files into their own folder everything worked just fine." ----- Original Message ----- From: "Steve Nevin" <snevin@worldnet.att.net> To: <DEED-MAPPER-USERS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, June 28, 2003 10:07 AM Subject: [DMU] Scanned Image Error > I just captured an image of a Topographic map from Terraserver and tried to > use it to include in my Deedmapper map. 3. I just captured an image of a Topographic map from Terraserver and tried to use it to include in my Deedmapper map. I have done this before with maps I had scanned in myself and had no problem. On this one, after I enter values for feet/inch & dots/inch (2000 & 600) and hit OK, I get an error that reads "Please enter an integer between 1 and 2400". Can someone tell me what might be wrong. I would really appreciate it. Thanks, Steve Nevin Researching Brown County, OH and Jackson County, KY

    3. Tom, There seem to be two Reedy Creeks in Chesterfield County, one which runs into the James, and one which runs into Kingsland Creek, the latter being the one which is south of Falling Creek. I will let you know if I find surveys containing common lines. Tom Bannister wrote: > Marilyn, > > Thanks for responding. 3. Marilyn, Thanks for responding. I agree with you as to the plausibility of the Reedy Ck in question being that on the S side of the James between the falls and Powhite Creek. But like you, I cannot find adjacent surveys sharing common lines. Also, if this is the right Reedy Ck, the Easely survey it seems has to be placed within the lines of Byrds 1687 patent. 3. Tom, first I want to thank you for all the work you have contributed to the Deed Pool. It has contributed immeasurably to my understanding of the patents and grants received by my ancestors. I do not know exactly where on Reedy Creek the Easley patent lies, but the Reedy Creek of interest here I believe to be that one which is South of the James and now lies in Richmond City. Additional information comes from the Executive Journals, Council of Virginia, Oct 26, 1704: "Mr. Auditor Byrd represented as proceeding in laying out land appropriated by the Gen. Assembly for the use of the French Refugees settled at Manicantown and produced two Platts of the tracts of land now laid, wch, with what was laid out formerly for them amounts in all to ten thousand and thirty three acres lying contiguous upon James River...and having called for the patents wch were granted to several persons last April General Court for lands in Henrico Co. for the signing of them until the land for the refugees was laid out: Exec. did sign the same. Jermiah Benskin, 324 acres, Robt. Easeley 315 acres..." On May 11, 1706, Easley had again petitioned the Council for the rights, and the General Court ordered the Patent to be delivered to Easley. Also, from the Secret Diary of William Byrd of Westover 1709-1712, May 12, 1709: "When I came to Falling Creek I had some complaints against Robin Easely, which seemed to be the effect of quarreling..." So, in entering the patent into the genealogical software and Deed Mapper, I concluded that the Reedy Creek in the Easley patent was the Creek just north of Falling Creek. However, not having much talent for this exercise, I am unable to place the plot in the mosaic. 3. Changing 'poles' to p did not change the result. Omitting the 'x' also did not change the result. This patent uses the points of the compass, rather than degrees, as in the following: "North East & by North half East forty eight poles". The help file indicates this should be entered as: "Ln NExN.5pE; 48p;". Does the mistake indicator !! in the second Ln suggest that the error begins there? Marilyn

    1. Re: [DMU] NGS and Delorme TopoQuad maps Semi-Answer
    2. O Eugene Queen
    3. Thanks to someone on this list some months ago I was successful in saving a TOPO (I have the N. C. set on CD ROM from National Geographic, 2001) as a JPG graphic in my deed file. I then imported (or whatever) the graphic using the following Deedmapper settings under Images: 2012 ft/inch, 112 dots per inch. For my use the center lat. is 35.37 and the center long. is 81.52. It does help me at times, but because of the "clutter" I turn the feature off except for the times I really need it. (Simply click it off under Images). I also use the roads and streams maps from DeedMapper...keeping them active all the time. As I recall, the TOPO graphic came in first as a small blurp to the top left of my screen and, perhaps, even out of sight. I found it quite by accident, then by trial and error was able to position it correctly behind the plots. If there is an archive of this User List's mailings, there is some info there regarding this. I believe that it was Steve who gave the clues which worked for me. Good luck...it's worth the battle (to me) for those times when I really need to see the TOPO background. (My first approach to this need was with an acetate overlay as one writer has described. This, too, works well.)
