    1. Re: [DMU] What do you do when the plat doesn't close correctly
    2. Jim Slade
    3. A land surveyor measures the distance horizontally using a plumb bob, not sloping like the hill side side. ALL of the older surveys had some inherent error of closure. The error of closure was often due to human error, unsteady plumb bob, faulty angular measurement, incorrect recording, etc, although it could also be caused by incorrect chain lengths or an out of adjustment transit. There are formulas for calculating the error of closure and correcting them. If the error was not within allowable limits the survey should be re-done. Often however, in actual practice, many of the early day surveyors recorded the measurements as they found them and did not take the trouble to calculate the closure [or did not know how] That is why most of the older surveys and plats do not close correctly. If you need more information, any text book on beginning surveying will explain the procedures for adjusting the error of closure. 2. So glad to be of help. Now if I could just get the hang of importing topographic maps, I'd be the happiest deedmapper around. I just haven't been able to do it, despite the tremendous information given in these posts. I'd also love to get the hang of downloading from the deed pool files. It just doesn't work for me on Windows ME. Or at leat I can't do it. Any guidance out there? Susan Manolakos

    1. Re: [DMU] Moving a plot
    2. If you have a tract highlighted, then, using the arrow keys, move to the general area where you want to relocate the tract, then a mouse click (I think left) in the new area, will "snap" that highlighted deed right to the new location. You can move multiple deeds that have already been joined up but may not be in the proper location, in the same way. First, you have to get the multiple deeds highlighted. You do this by highlighting one, then holding down the control key and clicking on other tracts, which will also become highlighted. When you have done this with several tracts, and they are all highlighted, you can move, using the arrow keys to the area where you want them to be, then left click with the mouse and they will all move together, preserving their original positions compared to each other. You can then move this collection of deeds around together, fitting them as you wish to the landscape or other properties. To undo the group, just click on one of them, or another deed. You can also change plat colors as a group in the same way. Highlight one deed, then hold down control and highlight additional deeds. Then go to plot view, and custom color. Changing the color will change the color of all of the highlighted deeds.

    3. Kathy I don't believe there is a way of snapping a tract into it's proper location. If you find a way to do this I would like to know. I have been plotting and placing tracts for several years and the big difficult job is finding the proper location for the tract of land. That feature would be a fabulous improvement to the software program. 3. There are a number. The correct volume (which I don't have at my finger tips) of the Va Genealogist will give a written description as will a couple of other books (at least one of which is available from Gen Pub. Co.) which I don't have with me at work. Eric Grundset has a set of maps which depict the lines for various sections of the state and there is another available from Iberian. Louisa was cut from Haonver on its current eastern line, its western line extended to the present end of Albemarle before it lost its western section to Albemarle. I don't remember any other boundary adjustments. The line with Orange was and is the current line. -----Original Message----- From: JGSull@aol.com [mailto:JGSull@aol.com] Sent: Saturday, June 28, 2003 7:37 PM To: DEED-MAPPER-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [DMU] Virginia County Lines Hi Is there any history or publication that describes the VA County lines and their changes over the years? 1. [DMU] What is the unit of measure?
    2. Jim Barrett
    3. I am working with some Plat Maps from South Carolina. When I enter the information for most of the maps the calculated area is close to the area shown on the plat. This is very hilly land so I don't expect the area to be exact. Most of the plats appear to use chains as the unit of measure. Two of the plats appear to use a measurement other than chains. When I enter the data for them the calculated area is very low. Here is an example: ! ! Abstracting info. Typ Plat Map Id Henry Prince - 2 Ref Greenvile Co., SC State Plats Vol. 7, Page 243 Dat 3 June 1784 Re 498 Acres - District of Ninetysix on the Wild Cat Branch waters of Tyger River ! ! This is about 1/25 the correct value (19.7 * 25 = 492.5). Is there a unit of measure that is equal to 5 chains? One of the lengths is given as 16 1-50- . There is a space between the 16 and the 1. 2. What you might try is scaling the lines off a paper map. Buy an Engineers scale or an Architects scale. Engineers scales are in 10ths. This is what I use because the plats I've seen in GA are scaled at 20 chains/inch so I can take a straight line measurement directly off the plat (has to be original size, of course, no enlargement or reduction) and then transfer that to a paper map. It isn't perfect but will get you in the neighborhood. Architect's scales are in 12ths and might be better if you scale is in feet. Barry Clark Fredericksburg, VA
