    3. Bob, a further experiment with using a "bold" line in red to outline the plot _was successful_. So this method did accomplish the purpose of drawing attention to the image against the black and white map lines. Marilyn

    3. Bob, it is definitely the colored plot image that is flashing by. But, I agree that Steve's maps are the preferred maps. I have appreciated them immensely. This attempt was made because I have only one file of interest and had a county map on hand and so tried to place it. I am glad to have learned about its limitations. 3. Thank you Bob. The odd part about the color fill is that the colored plot "flashes" by but does not stick. The "map" is a jpg image. I guess I will need to get a good old DeedMapper map, as Steve calls them. 3. I am sure that the answer is that your "map" is treated as an image and the only controls you have are those under View>Options>Images. The maps that Direct Line sells are different than scanned images of maps that you can create. They are vector line maps giving you the ability to change background color and line color for the different types of maps. The deed plotting works the same with either or both. I have not tried a scanned image myself so someone that has will probably confirm this. The file types for scanned images are bmp, jpg, and tif. The maps that Direct Line sells are bmf. 3. Barry, You might check to see if for your default settings on your printer you have "fit to page" set. I have sometimes found that that can cause your problem to happen. When you go to print from Deedmapper, if you can get to the Properties before it actually prints (I forget whether you can or not) to turn that off, it may help. Turning it off inside an application should not change the default settings for other apps. -Nancy Upshaw -----Original Message----- From: dadster3@juno.com [mailto:dadster3@juno.com] Sent: Tuesday, August 19, 2003 8:30 PM To: DEED-MAPPER-USERS-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [DMU] Re: DEED-MAPPER-USERS-D Digest V03 #47 Mr. Wilson, Thanks for the reply regarding the problem with DeedMapper pagination. I've had this printer for several years and have never had a problem like this. It prints everything from e-mail to a DOS version of Quicken flawlessly. There is nothing to adjust in DeedMapper, as far as I know, but I do think it is a software issue, not hardware. You didn't say what you were printing as a test. I was trying to print the line editor deed descriptions, not the plots. Haven't gotten to that yet. Anyway, I've worked around it by send 5 or so deeds to the printer individually. They que up and print just fine. I find that I prefer printing in small batches anyway. If there is a paper jamb or something it's easier to stop the print job and less wasteful. Thanks, Barry Clark Fredericksburg, VA ______________________________

I do not think this is a hardware problem at all. I am not sure what it is but it sounds like it is behaving like an improper printer driver. The only time I have seen that is when multiple printers are available. I have also seen improper printing happen when a parallel printer cable is too long. Whatever causes it, I am glad you have found an acceptable work around. Bob

Joining maps is a tedious process. I assume you already have a DeedMapper map in a project and you wish to join a new map to the existing map. Locate the position of the maps on your screen by placing the mouse crusor on one of the corners of the map and left click the mouse. This should highlight the map and at the top of the screen the map number will be displayed. The map can then be moved by holding down the left mouse key. Then drag the map to the proper position on the adjoining map. The map may be locked. You can unlock the map by clicking edit and click lock. I suggest after you have positioned the maps in their proper location, lock all maps. Dale

    1. [DMU] LUFKIN TX 7/24/03 ALL-DAY DEEDMAPPER WORKSHOP - Michael John Neill/POWELL DNA C. 1715 VA
    2. Vivian Cates
    3. Jim, Glad for the reminder for me to post back to the DEED-USERS-GROUP about next week's workshop. In real life Michael John Neill is a mathematics instructor at Carl Sandburg College (a two-year community college) in Galesburg, Illinois. He is developing a mid-west to national reputation as a genealogy and technology speaker. During his college's spring break, he conducts genealogy programs/classes at the college sometimes in March of every year. He has his own web page, root dig something. You can find it by doing a web search under his name. It gives his list of topics and more about him and his own genealogy research. So far as the DEEDMAPPER workshop and the genealogy conference are concerned, the DEEDMAPPER class may have one or two seats left in it. If your are interested call the college first thing Monday morning. As of Wednesday the 16th there were 18 registered with two seats left. I had one e-mail this morning from an interested party. Not sure if anyone else had registered on Thursday for these seats are not. Lunch is included in the price. Not sure what will be for lunch yet, but the college food service manager assures me that it will be something from the college food service line and not just a salad sandwich and a bag of chips. Think he mentioned maybe catfish. He can also fix a veggies plate, etc for those on a special diet or if you don't eat meat. But we need to know ahead of time, at least early that morning for any special requests. There are plenty of seats left for the regular conference where Mr. Neill will be giving four additional sessions, Immigrants from Europe to the Midwest, WAR I and II Draft Records, and two on internet site use, the last one including all kinds of maps on and off line. We had 40 registered on Wednesday for the regular conference. Hopefully we will be getting more people this next week. It is a more than excellent conference for the price even if I did organize it myself along with another adjunct instructor at the college. College food service manager has promised some really excellent food this year, not the usual box lunch with soggy sandwich, chips, etc. type lunch that you get at a lot of conferences/seminars. Friday night will be extra nice with buffet and real cloth napkins and tablecloths in red, white and blue. Really a bargin for the regular conference of $120.00 and the computer software workshop of $55.00. If anyone is interested I can e-mail you a registration form in MSWORD. Would also like to have more information on the POWELL DNA Group mention in Jim's signature line. I am interested a William Powell and his wife, Amey _?_ you have a child death recorded in the St. Paul's Parish Register of Stafford County, Virginia, c. 1715. My Powell line daughters out when their daughter married Anthony Buckner Thomas as recorded in the same published register in 1755. The son-in-law dies as Anthony Buckner in Halifax County, Virginia, with a will in 1780 where he leaves his daughter Winney Edmunds a number of pounds of goose feathers. Winney Buckner had married John Edmunds/Edmonds/Edmons before 1776 when my ancestor, James, was born. The whole tribe of Edmonds, from Francis Edmunds and his wife, Rachel_?_, had all migrated to Wilkes County, Georgia, c. 1786. The LDS information on this William Powell and Amy _?_ has to be wrong or else William was a bigamist with a wife and family in two states at the same time. 3. I've just finished reading "Measuring America", by Andro Linklater, recently published by Walker Books. Anyone who likes history and who is interested in how the U.S. came to be surveyed will find this to be a great read, well researched, and very informative. Linklater, who turns out to be a Englishman who has spent a lot of time in the U.S., was fascinated by the regularity of the public land one mile grid that he saw while flying cross country, and wondered how it came to be. The book spends a lot of time on the history of measurements and surveying, the English transition from the feudal system to private land ownership, the difficulties faced by surveyors in the wilds of America, and more. An interesting note for Virginia researchers: in some areas of Virginia the surveys were "large", as if the surveyor used a longer chain than normal. According to the book an early American surveying manual said the chain should be 22 yards (the standard length) for open land, 24 yards for woodland, and up to 32 yards in forest. It sounds strange to us today, but a strongly entrenched idea of those times was that an acre's size (and sizes of many other things) depended on how useful the land (or thing) was. Steve Broyles
