The only way I have ever been able to locate property in metes & bounds states is to track the property from owner to owner. When I'm at the current owner I ask the Property Tax Assessors' office where the property is located on the present platt of the county. You can use the deed indexes to track owner to owner. As for the court records - if you mean the land records see above. If you mean other types of records it depends on what type of record you are interested in. Things like land records, marriages, wills, probate, etc., etc., usually have indexes and you should consult those first. This isn't Mike but I can answer the question. The MD Dept of Assessment & Taxation's web page is http://sdatcert3.resiusa.org/rp_rewrite/ You have to know something about the property (e.g., address or map & parcel) in addition to the county. Once you have the proper account on screen, the "VIEW MAP" option is in the upper right hand corner [red letters on yellow background]. Once the map is displayed, right-click with your mouse on the map and "Save Picture As" ... note the location on your hard drive or navigate to the location desired. If you use WINDOWS XP. it includes the tools to rotate JPG formatted files. Otherwise use a program like MS Picture It (usually free on the PC) or Adobe Photoshop Elements, et al. Hope that helps. Mike Pierce, Please say more about downloading Md tax maps. I've just googled "tax maps maryland". Among many pages of url's, I have not yet found one offering downloads of maps. Second question: how do you rotate the image? T.T. Bannister Dept. of Biology Univ. of Rochester Rochester, NY 14627-0211 Tel 585-275-8716 Fax 585-275-2070 =======================
Charlotte. In Mayland, one can download copies of the tax map, which shows all current property boundaries. These are available in every state, I'm sure, although sometimes only in paper copies at the Court House. Through some work, I've managed to scale and rotate them correctly and I use them as the image in DeedMapper. These are particularly useful, since many property lines have not changed since the 1600's. When I've mapped an old deed, I often find its location by fitting it into the current tax map, much like a child's puzzle where there are carved out shapes on a board. Please write me if you want to hear more about this, including some samples. Mike Pierce
Greetings, I'm looking for software to make plots from Deeds, Surveys, etc. I was glad to find a Users forum for DEED-MAPPER. Can anyone offer some words about their experiences or some direction to articles or reviews about DEED-MAPPER. I'm looking toward plots of multiple land-owners that can be saved in a format for eventual inclusion in "Word" documents. Many Thanks, Hank Stuebing
Hank, I really liked it for what little time I was able to use it. <G> I found it very useful for plotting out the deed and then saving that in my genealogy software (TMG). So yes, you could use it in Word. It is fairly easy to use, it just that I don't have a lot of time to do both data entry and cleanup and plot deeds right now. Someday I hope to do all the deeds I have entered so I can see what the land looked like and hope to be able to plot that on a map, but I haven't gotten into that much yet. Teresa Ghee Elliott Any information I give that you can't find in your version of TMG 5.1 is probably due to customization on my part. I will be giving a presentation on Deedmapper to a group of genealogists and was wondering if anyone has added in a map other then the ones available from deedmapper. I would like to know how you went about it and what were some of its good points and bad points. I have added in scanned maps but was wondering particularly about digital maps from topographic or the usgs. Also has anyone tried using 7.5 minute map images instead of the 15 minute available from deedmapper. Thank you for any assistance you can provide. Charlotte cain

I've been using DM since the early DOS days (early 1990s), and at one time Steve Broyles gave me a back door entry to patch the colors. I am running into a very frustrating problem with my Deedmapper program and was wondering if anyone on the list had any suggestions.... I've been happily using Deedmapper since 1999 through several computers and various operating systems. All was going well on my newest computer (using Windows 2000 Professional) until yesterday. My map annotations started showing up in an awful green color and nothing I have been able to try has returned them to a black print. I can still change road and stream colors as I wish but even when I set the annotation color to black on the Maps tab of the View Options screen, I still get green annotations. Suggestions anyone???? Thanks, Margaret

I'm doing a presentation on land records for a genealogy society and I'm in need of an image (graphic) to use on a PPS presentation as an example of how a piece of property would look as described by metes & bounds. If the deed itself does not close the plot will not either. When entering the calls if all of the descriptions are complete Deed mapper will plot it exactly as written. In some deeds the last call is "following the meanders of the river to the beginning". This is represented by lm ; ; meanders to beginning end and Deedmapper will close the plot. However, most deeds particularly before 1800 are rather loose in their directions. Compass directions may easily be a couple of degrees off and the pole calls do not account for any change in elevation. [200poles going up and down a hill covers less area then 200 poles on flat land] Then there is always the errors of the surveyor, the clerk transcribing, and the difficulty of measuring how far that river really meanders. If you are concerned, try plotting the deeds of the neighbors and seeing if there is a error noticable in the deed. After having plotted over 250 plats I can tell you that very few actually close perfectly, a gap of 80p in a 500 acre plot is not much. Charlotte Cain

When I was using the DOS version of this software, and had old 1800 information from KY, I found that many a plot was not as the software said it was supposed to be. Since many of the primitive plots found in the court house probably did not have the accuracy that we have today. Once I closed the plot, then did some creative ways with the rest of the lines, it was easier to figure out how the piece really looked, and exactly as they had diagramed it in the original court records. I left out the 'pt', that is 5 succesive "LN". I noticed on the plot that the later "PT" descriptions were on the wrong corners, that is, none in between were left blank, they pointed to the river bank.
