The reasons are only important to you all in that it helps to pick the list up from time to time from a slump and will hopefully help you all to find a brick wall that someone else hadn't posted. Another reason is only purely administrative and not something you all need concern yourself with. You can participate or not as you like, but I hope you will so I can try to get to know a little something about where and what time frame you might be searching in. The virtual dinner party is something that has been somewhat successfull in the past on various others of my lists. For this, you pick a Decker ancestor or maybe 2, that you were it possible, you would love to sit down and spend the evening with, asking questions, having a conversation with about their day to day life, etc. Send the name to the list along with a few of the probing questions that you would like the answers to. The menu for this party is bring your own dish...if you have an old family recipe (preferably a Decker one, but not necessary for the cause) you can also share that recipe if you would like. Please be sure to change the subject line to reflect what is in the email...you can shorten Virtual Dinner Party to VDP so that we know the origin and still get a subject line in. What a fun and lovely idea! Thank you for the invitation. :-) My dinner companion would be Johan Peter Decker from Snyder County, PA. He was born 2 Oct 1788 (possibly 1784). He had three wives that I know of, (Maria) Magdalena Schwartz, Catherine Felty, and another Catherine. My question to him would be about the mystery concerning his daughter, Amelia Decker who married Daniel Kuhns. And it would be: "Is Amelia your natural born daughter with a Native American mother, or is it one of her grandparents who was 1/2 Native American? Or was she adopted into the family and there's no Native American blood in your own line? My covered dish: Mom's Oatmeal Cake 1 1/2 cups boiling water 1 cup oatmeal 1 1/2 cups flour 1/2 tsp salt 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup oil 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp soda 2 eggs 1 cup sugar Pour boiling water over oats. Let stand and prepare the following: Mix flour, cinnamon, soda, and salt. Add to the mixture of sugar, brown sugar, eggs, and oil, then add oatmeal mixture. Mix well. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes to an hour (keep checking) until done. Topping: 1 stick butter 1 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup milk 1 tsp vanilla Crushed walnuts Can of coconut (about 5-6 oz or less) Dissolve sugar in milk. Add butter and cook. Stir until it boils and thickens, then remove it from the heat. Add coconuts, walnuts, and vanilla. Pour over cake while warm. Return to oven and broil for 3-5 minutes. ===========================
Although Virtual dinner parties, cook books, and sharing fantasies may have a place on the internet, I see no place for it at a site that is supposed be dedicated to genealogy. If you want to share your recipes and daydreams why not do it on a site that was made for that purpose and not clutter up all of our mail boxes with information that has no relevance to serious genealogy.
