    3. David, The last post (for 1840) WAS your Decker! I looked at the next census (1850), which happens to be the first one where all family members living at home are enumerated, and they were all there! Here's the info: Federal Census, 1950, State of Indiana, County of Harrison, Precinct 45 Franklin Decker, Head, age 35, Farmer, value of farm=200 Julia A. Decker, Wife, age 34 Mary Decker, daughter, age 12 Perlina Decker, daughter, age 11 James Decker, son, age 5 Thomas Decker, son, age 2 John Decker, son, age 8/12ths Abraham is not listed here because he was born two years later. 3. Hi, Here's a list of all the Decker Heads-of-household in the Federal Census for the entire state of KY (1920). Your Benjamin Decker would probably be in one of these households as a 3 or 4 year-old. Unfortunately, the censuses that early only list the head and not the rest of the family, but it's a good place to look for other records (city and county in some cases are given). Best digging! I first learned of him from a biography on my grandfather published in Idaho in 1902. Frank J. Decker was born in Jefferson county, Indiana on February 4, 1849. His father, George, was a machinist, born in France and at nineteen years of age he was head of a large shop. He patented the first shoe pegging machine and was also the patentee of several other valuable inventions. He married Judith, daughter of John and Eleanor Hall. She was born in Kentucky. The father died in 1839 and the mother in 1899. In the 1880 census, his father was born in France and his mother in Indiana. In the 1900 census, his father was born in France and his mother in Kentucky. The 1920 census reported his father born in France and speaking French and his mother from Kentucky. This is why I am searching as this is really all I have.

    1. [DECKER] VDP
    2. Marvin Decker
    3. This VDP is an excellent idea. My desire for an ancestral dinner party would be invite my paternal grandfather, John Frank Decker, and see for myself if he is the rascal that his history makes him out to be. I would ask him who were his parents and siblings and where did he come from. Since he passed away before I was born, all I know of him is from his photos and what dad had told me, which unfortunately was not much. He was born in Madison, IN February 4th, 1848 from his own word although I cannot find any trace of him in Madison. He went to live with his grandmother (who?) in 1862 then in 1865 took up the harness making trade. Dad said that he lived for awhile in Kansas City then went to Stark County, IL to work in the coal mines. He joined the US 2rd Calvary, Company G in 1865 at age 17 and traveled with his unit which guarded the laying of tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad from Omaha to Laramie, WY. Dad said that John Frank was present at the driving of the golden spike when the two railroads met, completing the East to West railroad. He finished his tour and was released at Ft Ellis, Montana. In 1870, he lived in Helena, MT and by 1876 he took up farming at the same time doing freight hauling from Fort Benton to Deer Lodge and other points. In August of 1877 he married Eva Wickman at Helena, MT. April 1878, his first daughter Emma A Decker was born then in 1880, Elle E Decker was born, both in Helena. (Elle married Edward Cole). This is the family that is listed in the 1880 Lewis & Clark Co, MT Census and the first time that I could find him in any census. August 1883, Elizabeth Decker was born. In the Fall of 1884, John divorced Eva and in February 1885, Susie Decker was born. She died of the flu in December of 1918. Around this time, John homesteaded 160 acres located on the Nez Perce Indian Reservation in Idaho and still hauled freight. September of 1897, John married Ida Anna Boysen, age 17, and the following February, 1898, John's first son was born, Clarence Decker. December, 1899, Frederick Frank Decker was born and this was the family listed in the 1900 Idaho Census. January 1902, Elmer Edwin Decker was born. This was my dad. John sold the homestead and bought property in Lewiston, ID which he sold in 1906. He 1907, he moved to Baker, OR and bought a home there. July 1909 he separated from Ida, sold the house in Baker and took his boys and belongings and traveled by covered wagon to Irish Bend, OR which is near the coast and probably does not exist today except in name. July 1909 Edwin Decker was born and in July 1910, Ida divorced Frank, which was the name he had used in Idaho. Frank J Decker died at Salem, OR January 1, 1925 and is buried there. So you see, I have loads of questions to ask besides his ancestry. Ida Ann Boysen was listed as Brown in a short biography in 1902 but mom insists her name was Kooken. Boysen was listed on her marriage license. I have no idea where his daughters went except for the information on his pension application. He pension was denied as they could not find his records.

    1. Re: [DECKER] Virtual Dinner Party
    2. Personally, I like the idea of trying the VDT for those who want to participate. It certainly has brought new life to the Decker e-list. The person I would like to spend a few minutes with is WILLIAM HENRY DECKER, the grandfather I never knew. He disappeared in 1927, and even though the rivers were dragged, his body was never found. Things I would like to ask him: Where did you go? Did you create a new life for yourself? A new name? You were a very successful engineer in the paper-making industry, with several patents. Were you able to use that background, or did you start over in something completely different? New family? Do I have unknown relatives? William Henry Decker, b 5/22/1868 in Lee, MA. Married 11/17/1872 to Estella Elizabeth Johnston in Brownville, NY. His disappearance in, I believe 1927, when he was age 49, must have made the newspapers. Since I don't have an exact date, I haven't been able to track them down. He would have been living in Syracuse or Skaneateles at that time, or possibly around Watertown, and probably working at St. Regis Paper Co. Any help with this would be most appreciated. Annie

    1. [DECKER] VDP John Groscost Decker
    2. Judy Baker
    3. What a great idea! After a homestyle Pennsylvania Dutch dinner (chicken bot boi), I would ask my second great grandfather, John Decker (1833 -1896) these questions: 1. Why and when did you leave Adams County and move to Lancaster County? (John is found in 1850 residing with his parents, John and Sophia Groscost Decker in Oxford Twp. , Adams County, but by 1860, he's living in Manheim Twp., Lancaster County and working as a miller.) 2. What can you tell me about your Decker grandparents, uncles and aunts? Is it true that your aunt, Christiana Decker, was the second wife of your Groscost grandfather, Daniel? 3. How and when did you meet your wife, Emma Erisman? Did you know each other before you enlisted with the 77th Pennsylvania Infantry in the fall of 1861? (John and Emma married on 23 February 1864 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania during his reenlistment furlough.) 4. Were you able to spend time with brother, Levi, at Murfreesboro while the 77th and 79th were encamped there? Were you in the battles of Shiloh and Chickamauga? When did you find out that Levi was captured during the latter conflict and imprisoned at Danville? What were your experiences as a wagoner during the siege at Chattanooga and later campaigns of the 77th? In addition I'd ask many questions about Emma and the children and their everyday life in Lancaster County during the latter half of the 19th century. Judy Baker

    2. I am seeking the family and ancestry of Abijah Decker. He was born in NY or NJ about 1787. Abijah was a private in Capt. Aber Bunnell's Co NY Militia in the War of 1812. He enlisted first in Dec 1813 at Penn Yan, Ontario County,(now in Yates County) NY and was discharged in 1814 for which he later received a 40acre land warrant in Jasper County, Illinois (although I have found no indication he ever entered on that land). He served again "[A]s a substitute for a drafted man" and received an additional 120acre land warrant (place unknown). Abijah married Tina/Tiny/Tyne Jacobus (we speculate she was Martynje d/o Hendrick Jacobus) in Ontario County, New York 3 Jul 1814. The couple removed to Hamilton County Ohio by 1818, then to (neighboring) Dearborn County, Indiana by 1850, then to a land patent purchase in Le Sueur County Minnesota by 1860. Abijah and Tina removed to Wapello County Iowa by 1869 where Abijah died in Polk Twp on 28 Jan 1869. Tina died in Jefferson, Greene County, Iowa 8 May 1879. They had (known) issue: 1)Hannah b. ca1817 NY married Joseph Hayes Guard ca1839 Indiana had issue. 2)James Decker (speculation) b. ca1818 OH married by 1850 to Elizabeth. Lose track of this couple after 1850 Dearborn Co IN census. 3)Sarah b.ca1823 Ohio married Thomas Hyatt bef 1865. They were living in Greene County Iowa as of the 1880 census. 4)John Henry b.16 Dec 1829 Hamilton County, Ohio. He was a Civil War veteran. He married Lucy Gates in Dearborn County, IN on 6 Apr 1858. They had issue, he died in Polk County, Iowa on 24 Jul 1923. 5)Mary A. Decker b. ca 1830 OH married a Mr. Marsh (who/when/where?). 6)Aaron Decker b.1835 Hamilton County, Ohio. He was a Civil War soldier and died from his wounds at the home of his sister Mary Marsh in Vevay, Switzerland County, Indiana on 30 Jun 1865. He married Lydia H. Miner (1840-1921) in Cleveland, Le Sueur County, Minnesota on 16 Aug 1860. They had issue. 7)Margaret b. ca1836 OH. She was enumerated with her parents in the 1850 census of Dearborn, IN; nothing more is known about her. 8)Frances Decker b.1839 Ohio. She was enumerated with her parents in the 1850 census of Dearborn, IN; nothing more is known about her. Who were Abijah's parents and siblings? Who were the parents/family of his wife Tina? Seeking more information on the children of Abijah and to connect with any descendants/researchers of these Deckers. Thank you. Vicky.
