Jim, did you have a chance to review any of the census returns for Orange county around that time? Carpenter was and is a big name for that area still today. Carpenter and Smith were partners in a mill in Monroe, Orange County. Decker was a very commen name for Warwick and surrounding Towns. I checked my database but did not find any Margarets, sorry. Let me know if you need more info about the area, as that is where I am from. Kim Kim
I am researching my Carpenter line. My gggrandfather Levi V. Carpenter's (b. 1832 Deerpark Orange County New York) parents were Benjamin D. and Elizabeth Canfield Carpenter. I have not been able to confirm the identify of Benjamin's parents. In my research, I have read about a Benjamin and Margaret Decker Carpenter who lived in Orange County New York. Benjamin died in 1821. In his will, a son named Benjamin was mentioned. I believe that this son might be the father of my Levi Carpenter. Benjamin's will was probated in Orange Co., NY; Liber F p. 415. Abstract shows wife Margaret. Sons; John, Solomon, Benjamin. (seven children including above 3 sons) Executors; Margaret Carpenter, James Swartwout, Levi Van Etten, Jr. Witnesses; Sanford Clark, David Glimpse, James Westfall. I am told that another link could possibly be that my Levi V. Carpenter was named after the Levi Van Etten Jr. mentioned in the will. Levi Van Etten Jr. married Benjamin and Margaret's daughter Eleanor. So I am hoping that someone on the Decker list might have a connection to Margaret Decker Carpenter and will be able to help me confirm whether or not she is in my Levi V. Carpenter line. Any information will be appreciated. Thanks, Jim in Ohio

In March I shared the Abijah Decker family and that I am seeking to learn more and connect with others researching this family. I have located additional information on several of his children and therefore, I am reposting my original querry with the updates. Thus far, no one on the Decker list has come forward as being a descendant or researcher of this family. Abijah Decker was born in NY or NJ about 1787. Abijah was a private in Capt. Aber Bunnell's Co NY Militia in the War of 1812. He enlisted first in Dec 1813 at Penn Yan, Ontario County,(now in Yates County) NY and was discharged in 1814 for which he later received a 40acre land warrant in Jasper County, Illinois (although I have found no indication he ever entered on that land). He served again "[A]s a substitute for a drafted man" and received an additional 120acre land warrant (place unknown). Abijah married Tina/Tiny/Tyne Jacobus (we speculate she was Martynje d/o Hendrick Jacobus) in Ontario County, New York 3 Jul 1814. The couple removed to Hamilton County Ohio by 1818, then to (neighboring) Dearborn County, Indiana by 1850, then to a land patent purchase in Le Sueur County Minnesota by 1860. Abijah and Tina removed to Wapello County Iowa by 1869 where Abijah died in Polk Twp on 28 Jan 1869. Tina died in Jefferson, Greene County, Iowa 8 May 1879. They had (known) issue: 1)Hannah b. ca1817 NY married Joseph Hayes Guard ca1839 Indiana had issue. 2)James Decker (speculation) b. ca1818 OH married by 1850 to Elizabeth. Lose track of this couple after 1850 Dearborn Co IN census. 3)Sarah b.ca1823 Ohio married Thomas Hyatt bef 1865. They were living in Greene County Iowa as of the 1880 census. 4)John Henry b.16 Dec 1829 Hamilton County, Ohio. He was a Civil War veteran. He married Lucy Gates in Dearborn County, IN on 6 Apr 1858. They had issue, he died in Polk County, Iowa on 24 Jul 1923. 5)Mary A. Decker b. ca 1830 OH married a Mr. Marsh (who/when/where?). 6)Aaron Decker b.1835 Hamilton County, Ohio. He was a Civil War soldier and died from his wounds at the home of his sister Mary Marsh in Vevay, Switzerland County, Indiana on 30 Jun 1865. He married Lydia H. Miner (1840-1921) in Cleveland, Le Sueur County, Minnesota on 16 Aug 1860. They had issue. 7)Margaret b. ca1836 OH. She was enumerated with her parents in the 1850 census of Dearborn, IN; UPDATE: She married Richard Bowton in Dearborn County, IN on Sep 19, 1855. He was s/o Mark Bowton b. England and Mary Nash. Richard and Margaret had issue. Richard died in 1902 and margaret after January 1903 and probably in Dearborn County. 8)Frances (Fanny) Decker b.1839 Ohio. She was enumerated with her parents in the 1850 census of Dearborn, IN; UPDATE: She married William H. Gipson in Dearborn County on Jun 22, 1858. They had issue. Who were Abijah's parents and siblings? Who were the parents/family of his wife Tina? Seeking more information on the children of Abijah and to connect with any descendants/researchers of these Deckers. Thank you. Vicky.
Bugwood Cemetery has many Decker graves. There is also a Decker Cemetery in the same vicinity with more. I have been to Bugwood but didn't know about the other at the time. dekinman@cs.com wrote:This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I am really not sure if your John Decker is the same as mine. I have very little information on him that my Grandmother Decker provided me. In her paper work she has written that my Great Great Great Grandfather was John Decker; she doesn't have a wife listed. However, James Gabriel Decker, my Great Great Grandfather had a brother named John and his father was John also. According to the 1870 United States Federal Census there was a John Decker married to a Margaret; their children were William, John, James and Ella (in the state of Illinois). In everything that I have been able to piece together, this James is my Great Great Grandfather that ended up in Parnell, Wayne County, Kentucky in the 1920 and 1930 United States Federal Census. I am going to ask my father more about Bugwood. He and I are going to be going to Monticello and Cooper this spring. We are going to visit the Decker Cemetary. I am not sure if we are talking about the same cemetary or not, but if my memory serves me right, it very well maybe the same. ============================== Gain access to over two billion names including the new Immigration Collection with an Ancestry.com free trial. I would invite my great grand father Isaiah (Issaac?) Decker to the gathering. I would want to know where he and his family have been hiding all these years. So many stones unturned only to find bugs but no related Deckers. Family stories have it that they were a "well to do" family living on Long Island, NY. He married my ggrandmother (Lockwood) and had a girl they named James (why?). My ggrandmother said they treated her like a servant that only purpose was to clean and bear children for them, so she left. Somewhere they found out that Issiah lived into the 1930s but I can not find anything on him or any of his family. Merry
If I could talk to an ancestor, it would be Nicholas DECKER/Susanna WEBER, my great-grandparents whom came to the USA from Luxembourg in the 1870`s. I would ask them why they decided to venture here, what the journey was like on the seas and once they arrived here, how they decided to end up in Minnesota, what that was like. Also I would ask about their home country of Luxembourg. My, the conversation I would have with them!!!!! Barb in Minnesota
