Did you try the library? There are also some libraries that keep indexes of deaths in the area (there's a name for it but I'm not sure what it is). --- Maggie Toussaint <maggietoussaint@adelphia.net> wrote: > I looked all through the Richmond newspapers for her > obituary.
I looked all through the Richmond newspapers for her obituary. Believe me, I wanted to find it for the reasons you mentioned. I'll try the death certificate route next. Thanks for all you help. Arrgh! You are right. 1890. So Bertha is his older sister by 8 years. That makes more sense because her children were so much older than Mama and her brother. Thank you Crystal. I keep hoping the math gene will kick in one day, but for now, I'm stuck with this stupid math-deficient brain. Eleanor, My great-grandfather was Henry Decker from Cincinnati Ohio. His mother was Elizabeth Seig b. Hamburg Germany 1818;m. Henry Singledecker 1844 in Germany; came to USA 1847. Henry died circa 1854 probably in Ripley co of cholera. Elizabeth married Henry Miller probably in Cincinnati 1856. Lived Dearborn co IN 1860, Decatur Co. 1870 &1880 Moved to Adams co. IN early 1880s. My great-grandfather used the name Shingledecker when he married but dropped the Shingle in the early 1900s This information comes from census records, county histories, obituaries, family legend and first hand account by elderly ancestors, but a large amount of it remains undocumented. Your family events seem similar, have you tried the name change? Shingledecker also has many spellings. I am always happy to share information as well as receive new leads. Jackie
Hi Crystal, Thanks for inquiring about my Decker ancestors. Here's the info I have on Glen Decker (b 1880) and his sister Bertha (b1882). Bertha Virginia Decker married Frank Davis Taylor and lived in Richmond, VA. Bertha's life span was 1882-1956, and she is buried in Richmond at Hollywood Cemetery. She had two children, Anne Decker Taylor (1911-1990) who never married and Edna Virginia Taylor (1907-1966) who married Warner Moore but had no children. In the 1930 census Bertha, Frank, Anne, and Edna all lived in Richmond (county = Richmond City), and Bertha's birthplace (and that of her parents) is listed as Iowa. We searched backwards from Bertha because our original inquiries to find Glen were fruitless. Mama (Glen's daughter Vivian) remembers staying with Bertha in Richmond, VA when she was very small. Fairly soon after that, Mama's parents divorced and she lost touch with her father. We've searched lots of records for Glen, and found lots of other Glen Deckers, but not our Glen Earl Decker. He's listed as 30 yrs old on Mama's birth certificate in 1926, so that puts his birth at 1880. So, Glen Earl Decker, b 1880 d??, married Flossie Carver of Wellburn, FL on June 13, 1925. (we have a copy of their marriage license). They had two children, Vivian (b 1926) and Glen Earl Decker, Jr (b 1928, d 1962). Glen and Flossie divorced 26 September 1932 in St. Augustine, FL. We have a copy of the divorce decree, but after that the trail goes cold. He served in WWI in the Army Transportation Dept., so we've searched military records, draft records, etc from Florida, Virginia, New York, Michigan, and Indiana. Nothing that fits what we know about him. We've been to VA hospitals in FL. No luck there. Also, Mama thought he was a fire fighter in Volusia Co FL but there are no records there supporting that. The Iowa lead is fairly new to our research. I put the notice on the loop because I was hoping someone might see the name and be an online shortcut to the information we seek. I'd like to find out what happened to Glen, and to find out if he had any other siblings. Also, we are interested in the family medical history to see what sorts of things "run" in the family. Any suggestions you might have will be welcomed.
