    2. Tina Williams
    3. I'm looking for information on a William DECKER born about 1831 in NY. He married Nancy A. Dawson, date and place unknown and moved to OR at some point and probably died (date unknown) in OR. They had a daughter Ellenor (Nellie) Dawson Decker b 1857 in WI, married Daniel Livingston GORDON May 24, 1877 (in either CA or OR), died August 6, 1936 in Worden, Klamath, OR. I believe they also had a son Elmer DECKER born about 1863 in WI. I also believe they raised the Nellie's daughter (perhaps born out-of-wedlock?) Edna May DECKER born Jan 22, 1873 in Worden, Klamath, OR, married Frederick Thomas KINGERY Oct 7, 1888 in OR, died Oct 28, 1951 in OR. Any help would be greatly appreciated! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tina Williams, [email protected] Williams(on), Benefiel(d), Grow, Kerby, Kingery, Edmunson, Akers, Hicklin, Shrum, Kitterman, Chitwood

    1. RE: [DECKER-L] William DECKER in OR
    2. Tina Williams
    3. THANKS so much for the excellent history lesson on OR! I'm new to genealogy and (obviously!!) hadn't done my homework on this one. I got the info on his birth from LDS records and, in looking back, I see (now) that the info of his year of birth and place of birth was in < > meaning it wasn't known for certain. So, the guy could have been born anywhere!! The birth place of his daughter in 1857 was also in < >, however, her death place was Worden, Klamath, OR, so I'm guessing they knew pretty well she died there. So, to recap, I'm looking for William DECKER, b abt 1831, probably not in OR, m Nancy DAWSON b abt 1835, probably not in OR, who had a daughter named Ellenor Dawson DECKER b 1857 and d Aug 6, 1936 in Worden, Klamath, OR. I did go on-line and tried to find about Worden. All I could find is that it is a town today (got the zip code!). Don't know it's history at all. I will write the OR roots mailing list for info on the town and maybe these people. Thanks ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Tina Williams, [email protected] Williams(on), Benefiel(d), Grow, Kerby, Kingery, Edmunson, Akers, Hicklin, Shrum, Kitterman, Chitwood -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [SMTP:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, February 14, 1998 9:34 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [DECKER-L] William DECKER in OR I question the dates in the message from Tina Williams that there were English-speaking Decker ancestors in Oregon in 1831. Oregon became part of the United States in 1846, by treaty with Great Britain. Previously, the treaty of 1818 permitted "joint occupation" by USA and Britain of the Oregon territory. According to my Encyclopaedia Brittanica, before 1829 the Hudson's Bay Company built Fort Vancouver on the site of present Vancouver, Washington, on the Columbia River opposite the mouth of the Willamette River. IN 1829, the Company built another post at the falls of the Willamette on the site or the present Oregon City, OR. After this, American colonists came to the Willamette Valley, and retired employees of the Company, mostly French Canadians, were settled there by 1835. By 1840 there were 151 Americans in Oregon. The first immigrant train over the Oregon Trail came in 1842, and the "Great Migration" over the Oregon Trail began the following year. The people of Oregon voted for statehood in 1857 and it was granted by Congress in 1859. Tina Williams' message states that her ancestors were in "Worden, Klamath". I cannot find Worden in my atlas, but Klamath County, around the city of Klamath Falls, is on the California border in Southern Oregon. I have not researched this, but I recall reading that many settlers of Southern Oregon came north from California after the 1849 California Gold Rush. Klamath County is east of the Cascade Mountains, and is colder, higher in elevation, and less attractive for agriculture than is the Willamette Valley. My guess is that the William Decker mentioned by Tina Williams may have been born in 1831, but not in Oregon. He might have gone to California in 1849 (at age 18) and he and his wife may have moved to Oregon by 1857 when their daughter Ellenor was said to have been born. Or they might have migrated to Oregon over the Oregon Trail after the Willamette Valley had been settled by Americans, and then moved on to th Klamath area. I have no Decker ancestors or relatives in Oregon. My earliest known ancestor was Isaac Decker, born about 1785, probably in New Jersey or New York (perhaps in Sussex County, NJ), married Hannah McCollum (died 1820), moved to Island Creek Township, Jefferson County, Ohio about 1817, later married Jane Todd Wilgus, died about 1834, possibly in Meigs County, Ohio. I and others still seek information on the ancestors of this Isaac Decker and his two wives.

    3. Dear Researchers, Cornelia DECKER/DEKKER married Simeon DUTCHER on August 18, 1790. The marriage is recorded at two Reformed churches, those of Greenbush and Schodack Landing (only the latter entry confirms the bride's given name). There are promising clues as to the family of Cornelia. In the estate papers of Isaac DECKER deceased intestate in July 1804 in Schodack, NY, there is an affidavit from Simeon Dutcher stating that the decedent was his brother-in-law. Also mentioned in these papers are a brother Jacob DECKER, about whom nothing else is known. According to Simeon's Rev. War pension file, before coming to Schodack he had lived in Claverack in Columbia County, and the Claverack church records a child Ephraim, born 1786 by his first wife Margareta KUHN (prob. daughter of Adam KUHN and Margaretta VAN DER HOEF) Meanwhile, a Cornelia DECKER had been christened at Claverack in 20 April 1766, daughter of a Hendrick DECKER and Catherine (VAN) VREDENBURGH (ca. 1743- , daughter of Isaac VAN VREDENBURGH and Geesjen PIER). Catherine's father Isaac and stepmother Cornelia WHITBECK were sponsors. Hendrick and Catherine had five other children from various sources: i. Isaac DECKER was born about 1767 in Columbia Cty, NY. (m. Catharine BRISEE) ii. Geesje DECKER was born about 1772 in Columbia Cty, NY. iii. Hendrick DECKER was born on 26 MAY 1779 in Columbia Cty, NY. iv. Catrina DECKER was born on 27 DEC 1781 in Livingston, Columbia Cty, NY. v. Petrus DECKER was born about 1789 in Dutchess Cty, NY. These are in addition to the Cornelia b.c. 1766 and her possible brother Jacob. "Hendrick Dekker and Catlyntje Dekker" sponsored the baptism of one of Simeon and Cornelia's children at the Greenbush Church in 1791. What is desired is better confirmation that Simeon's wife Cornelia is the same as Hendrick and Catherine's daughter Cornelia, although it does seem quite probable already. And if they are indeed the same -- who are the parents of the elder Hendrick DECKER? David See (with help from a couple of cousins) [email protected] http://pages.preferred.com/~dsee/genie.html

    3. Jeri: I am fairly sure that your Luke Decker is the son of Jan (John) Decker Jr. b. 1719 and Dina Kuykendall b 1719. Here's what I know about him: ------------------ "The Decker Genealogy" by Adm. Benton Weaver Decker, 1980. Pages copied from the volume at the Library of Congress. KB & KM = Baptismal & Marriage Registers of the Old Dutch Curch of Kingston, NY by Roswell Randolph Hoes. (KB=baptism, KM=marriage) The Adm. used a numbering system based on the individual's sequence of birth in his family. Your Luke is, I fairly sure, number G-1-2-3-9. G Jan Gerretsen Decker b. bef 1640, d. 1717 Port Jervis [NJ?], immigrant from Heerden, Gelderland, Holland, m. 1664 in Esopus (KM13) to Grietjen Hendricks Westecamp, dau of Hendrick Janse & Femmetje Albertse. 6 children. First child was: G-1 Gerret Jansen Decker b 1665 (KB51) in Esopus m1 1685 Margaret (Greitje) Jans Decker b 1664 (KB43) dau of Lieut. Jans Broersen Decker & Heltje Jacobs. Ulster Militia 1715. m1 1711 Barbara DeWitt b 1692 (KB710) dau of Jan & Wyntje Kierstad. m2 Margaret Kline, wid of Benjamin Ackerli. 5 children of m1. Third child was: G-1-2-3 Jan Decker Jr. b 1719 (KB2670) d 1790 Knox Co., IN. m 1739 (M98) Dina Kuykendall b 1719 dau of Jacob & Sara Westfael d 1797. Rev. (Same Family as G-1-2-5-1-1-1) The very next listing is for G-1-2-3-10, Luke's brother John b. 1767. Probably all that is listed on page 21 is Luke's first child G-1-2-3-9-1 and that child's descendents, maybe only one generation. ------------------ I have run into Jan Jr. & his son Luke several times, because I thought that my John Decker moved to Knox Co., IN in 1784 with your family. Patriotic Service, VA. [This appears to be your Luke's father, G-1-2-3] [B] Decker, John: b 1750 d Dec 1817 m Hannah Kuykendall. Patriotic Service, VA. This man was the son of Luke Decker. [This may be my John G-1-2-5-1, son of Lucas, who m. Hannah Harness, despite the Kuykendall/Harness thing, because DAR originally had your Sarah's last name as Kuykendall, too.] [C] Decker, Luke: b ca. 1760 d. aft 1825 m1 Sarah Harness m2 Trenny Claypool. Ensign VA. [This seems to be your Luke, G-1-2-3-9] ------------------ "Pioneer Ancestors of the Members of the Society of Indiana Pioneers," compiled by Ruth Dorrel, published 1983 by Family History Section, Indiana Historical Society, 315 W. Ohio St., Indianapolis, IN 46202 lists five Deckers: Decker, John b 1750 VA, settled 1784 in Knox Co., IN [This is the one I used to think was my family. Don't know who he is. BW Decker shows G-1-2-3-10 John as b. 1767. But 1992 IGI shows John Decker, son of Jan Decker/Dina Kuykendall as b <1753>. So this could be brother to your Luke.] Decker, John b 1791 Knox Co., IN, was member of IN State Legislature, Knox Co. sheriff. [Is this a son of your Luke?] Decker, John (Garretson) b 1719 NY, settled 1784 Knox Co., IN, prev. lived PA, served in War of Revolution. [G-1-2-3, your Luke's father] Decker, Joseph b ca. 1750 VA, settled 1784 Knox Co., IN, prev. lived PA, served in War of Revolution. [per BW Decker, G-1-2-3-5 Joseph (brother of your Luke) was b. 1752. This is probably him] Decker, Luke b ca. 1760 VA, settled 1784 Knox Co., IN, prev. lived PA, served in War of Revolution & Battle of Tippecanoe. [G-1-2-3-9, your Luke] ------------------ This, then, is my interpretation of the Indiana Pioneers & DAR records, along with the BW Decker stuff. If you have records that are more clear on this, let me know. Rhonda Tomlinson [email protected]

    3. Hi ole friend Edward, It tis me ole MAL from the Whitney group. You contributed lots of good information to the Whitney group and I am sure you will add a lot to the Decker group. You say you have not had any messages yet, I have had quite a few messages lately, maybe yours are delayed or you are not formerly signed in yet. Did you get a message saying "you are subscribed to the list"? Well, you can find that out yourself I guess. Great to have you aboard. Will check out your Decker line but I think as I remember you are of the Other line than me. You do have my Decker line right? Ok, mate, Hope someone can help you, seems to be a lot from Johannes line on this list. Good luck. MAL
