Diane and all: I was just reading my mail, and came across an Edward NAGLE obit on the Sussex Co. Rootsweb listserv. It mentions a Mrs. Samuel DECKER of Newton, Sussex Co, NJ. Sussex county borders Orange Co. on the south. Orange Co. is where I said my DECKER'S came from. The message is from Catherine DiPietro, and dated Tue, 16 Mar 1999. Hope this helps...-Judy Fudala Clauss

Hi, I'm looking for pieces of my family tree but the problem I'm having is that they keep changing the name...here's an example but they have also changed to other names... If anyone out there with a Decker surname that has changed from one of these please let me know (I already have 2) Michelle Also DeCares |Jean Dicaire/Dicker | SEX: M | M: to Sarah Teckel | (1: fisherman) | | | |Jean-Louis Dicaire/Dicker/Digaire | | SEX: M | | B: 1694 @ Hauzerburg, Newfoundland | | M: 08 Jan 1720 to Marie-Suzanne Lorain/Lorrain | | @ Riviere-des-Prairies | | (1: ct. 02 Pierre Raimbault) | | (2: Bapt. 24-04-1706, Mtl.) | | (3: Captured by Indians,) | | (4: autumn 1705. Ransomed by) | | (5: Louis-Thomas de JONCAIRE) | | (6: farmer of the Sieur Guay.) It is in the baptismal record of the parish registry of Notre- Dame-de-Montr‚al that we learn that he is 12 years old, that he is the son of Jean Dicaire/Diker/Dikker ...that he comes from Hauzerburg, New Found Land....and that he is English. ----------------------------------------------------------- Contact the Memorial University of Newfoundland, St.John's, NF, A1C 5S7 and ask *THEM* what they did with Hauzerburg !! ( I swear to you ....I didn't take it !! ) <grin> ----------------------------------------------------------- Documents pertaining to him are rare...but as best as we can figure...Louis-Thomas de Joncaire saw that a young white boy of about 11 years old was a prisoner of the Indians and ransomed him. Chances are pretty good that his parents had been killed or captured-and-eaten by these same Indians. So what do you do with an orphaned 11 year old ? ... especially when travelling to his place of origin is a major project that might take years to prepare. So he was adopted. ----------------------------------------------------------- "ct." here means that Jean-Louis and Suzanne Lorain drew up a marriage contract ...which still exists....on the 2nd of January 1720... (six days before their wedding) in front of notary Pierre Raimbault.

"I WANT" I want ancestors with names like Rudimentary Montagnard or Melchizenick Von Steubenhoffmannschild or Spetznatz Giafortoni, not William Brown or John Hunter or Mary Abbott. I want ancestors who could read and write, had their children baptized in recognized houses of worship, went to school, purchased land, left detailed wills (naming a huge extended family as legatees) had their photographs taken once a year -- subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate isinglass frames annotated with calligraphic inscriptions, and carved voluble and informative inscriptions in their headstones. I want relatives who managed to bury their predecessors in established, still-extant (and indexed) cemeteries. I want family members who wrote memoirs, who enlisted in the military as officers and who served in strategically important (and well documented) skirmishes. I want relatives who served as councilmen, schoolteachers, county clerks and town historians. I want relatives who `religiously' wrote in the family Bible, journaling every little event and detailing the familial relationship of every visitor. In the case of immigrant progenitors, I want them to have arrived only in those years wherein passenger lists were indexed by National Archives, and I want them to have applied for citizenship, and to have done so only in those jurisdictions which have since established indices. I want relatives who were patriotic and clubby, who joined every patrimonial society they could find, who kept diaries, and listed all their addresses, who had paintings made of their houses, and who dated every piece of paper they touched. I want forebears who were wealthy enough to afford, and to keep for generations, the tribal homestead, and who left all the aforementioned pictures and diaries and journals intact in the library. But most of all, I want relatives I can FIND!!!
With all the information posted on this list along with the queries it would be good if some of our ancestors were posted as the GenExchange. Something that dosen't look like it would help now could be a great help to others in the future. In their marriage index the database has a memo field wheir you could list their parents or your questions about their parents. If several on the list do this they may find an ancestor in the birth index, listing the parents. The URL for the Genexchange is: http://www.genexchange.com/us.cfm If you have some good stories about your ancestors each State has a space for Bio's, which could be of interest to other Decker Researchers, includeing those on the list. Will try and have my wife write one up on her GGrandfather John L. Decker Born in Kingston, NY 1828. That is as far back as we can get on her family (Decker Side). The Email for my wife Karen Decker Brown is [email protected] Cheers Ray Brown

I am searching the family of JOHN DECKER, who was born 9 January 1818 at Yates County, New York according to some old family records. The 1880 census shows that his parents were both born in New Jersey, but I have been unable to find anything relating to his parents. Does anyone have any DECKER'S from Yates County, New York? There was a listing for a JOHN DECKER, born 7 January 1819, son of Solomon DECKER and Paulina NIVER at the Reformed Dutch Church, Shawanguink?, Ulster County, New York. This date looks awfully close to my John DECKER. Does anyone have anything on this Solomon DECKER and Paulina NIVER? I will gladly share what I have on the descendants of John DECKER. Any help anyone can give would be greatly appreciated, as I am at a dead end. Thanks, Brent

DECKER list-ners - Sorry to reply to list, but couldn't find the sender's email address. Hi Diane (Eaton-Hacker), This is the most "encouraging" news I've received about this gent (my great great grandfather). Prior to 1855 - when he married at age 22, I have nothing. I'm waiting for pension papers to come - but am having problems with NARA over his file. Anyway, (my) Horace Decker, at 22 yrs was living in Hillsdale Co. MI when he married Lucretia Bailey in Oct 1855. From early census -- 1860 -- he indicated he was born in NY. Where were your Absalom and Sarah DECKER living when their children where born? Most anxious to hear back from you. Please email me privately so we can move the conversation from the list. Dear Diane, I have a Horace P Decker in my data base, but I have no information on him. He is the son of Absalom and Sarah [Rees] Decker...he is their fourth child as far as I can tell. I do not even have a birth date for him. He was born between Naomi Ellen, 1850 and Elmer Wellington, 1853. Diane Eaton Hacker
Scott, Apparently he had no middle name. Where is your James Decker from, maybe I can help?
