The wars in that area led to a large number of immigrants to this country, for example, French folks who did not want to be German when the Germans took over, and vice versa. 3. Alsace and Lorraine are regions of northeast France. As border regions, Alsace and Lorraine have been fought over for centuries by France and Germany, their beleaguered past recalled by many a military stronghold and cemetery. Today the region presents a more peaceful landscape of pastel-painted villages, fortified towns and sleepy vineyards. At the northeast frontier of France, bordered by the Rhine, Alsace forms a fertile watershed between the mountains of the Vosges and the Black Forest of Germany. Lorraine, with its gently rolling landscape on the other side of the mountains, is the poorer cousin but appears more overtly French in character. Caught in the wars between France and Germany, Alsace and Lorraine have changed nationality four times since 1871. ----- Original Message ----- From: EJ000 <EJ000@webtv.net> To: <DECKER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, October 23, 2002 9:08 AM Subject: Re: [DECKER-L] Deckers from Alsace Lorraine to Lewis Co. 2. Barb Decker
    3. New to this list. Looking for Nicholas, Peter, John, and Michael Decker who came to Lewis Co. NY. in the 1880's from Alsace Lorriane. Nicholas married Lousia Bintz and moved to Ia. One of the other brothers might have also married a Bintz. Have family photo of Michael's family taken in Watertown, Ny around late 20's. Has anyone come across any of these Deckers? Robbie Decker

    3. The following was also found in today's Rootsweb EZine, Missing Links. Even though my Deckers are in Muskingum Co., Ohio, they are not so far connected to those in Holmes Co. Would hate to see this not go to a deserving relative. The Goodwill link did not seem to work for me but they could be having temporary problems. o SHOEMAKER-DECKER Family Record, Photos; Item ID # 410447 Auction ends: 11 October 2002 6:30:28 AM PT Seller: Goodwill Industries of Wayne and Holmes Counties, Inc., Ohio, USA Family record in picture frame under glass. There are six real photographs mounted in the frame -– two adults and four children (probably the mother and father and their children/child). In the background of the pictures of the man and woman you can see a giant sign for Coca Cola painted on the side of a large brick building. [Editor's Note: The man, who might have a light moustache, is seated outside, wearing a suit, white shirt, string tie, light hat with dark band; pretty woman with short dark hair and small dark hat is standing outside and wearing a dark dress with elbow length sleeves; photo taken in front of porch steps of light-haired boy perhaps age 7-10, wearing long dark trousers and open necked, long-sleeved, white shirt, a girl with dark hair who is much younger than the boy, and a small white dog; lighter-haired boy wearing dark knickers and long sleeved white shirt, clutching to his shoulders a black and white cat in one arm and either another cat or maybe a rabbit in the other arm; photo taken in a field with what appear to be farm buildings in distant background; dark-haired young baby in what might be a christening gown, apparently taken on an inside porch or sun room.] There are sections for Marriages, Births, and Deaths on the matting, with the names Cha. SHOEMAKER and Arilla R. DECKER written in the Marriage section, the names and birth dates of Rosezilla ? SHOEMAKER and Arilla SHOEMAKER on June 27, 1926 written in the Births section, and the name Arilla and the date of June 27, 1926 written in the Deaths section. There are two other names and dates in the Births section but I can't make them out. The wood frame is very heavy and solid, with a paneled wood backing through which you can see an old newspaper that was used for padding. The frame measures about 21" x 18" and it weighs about 5.5 lbs. by itself. http://www.shopgoodwill.com/viewItem.asp?ItemID=410447 Denny Shirer - drdx@neo.rr.com - Canton, OH Shirer Family Genealogy - http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~mysong Muskingum County, OHGenWeb - http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohmuskin/

    2. Does anyone with a Maine connection possibly have knowledge of the following Decker family? I have a birth certificate for WILLIAM DECKER, born Aug 21, 1897 in Rumford, Maine. Parents' names are William Henry Decker , paper maker, born in Lee MA, and Estelle Elizabeth Johnston, born in Brownville, NY. I believe that William Decker went by the name of Carleton Decker throughout his life, but I have no idea why. Annie San Jose, CA << One note the other researcher was Caroline Rhuda, who has done extensive research on the Decker family, along with Helene Decker, who has also done extensive research on the Decker family. Helene llives still in Maine! Near to Kennebunk if memory serves correct. I think Caroline also lives in Maine as well. Adam >>
