Dean, Benjamin He enlisted on 28 October 1775 in the Volunteer Company of Dragoons of Prince William's Parish (The Swift and Bold) under Captain Charles Browne. He enlisted in the Fifth Regiment on 2 October 1776 and was a corporal on 3 November 1776. On 1 December 1776, he was a private and on 23 February 1777, he was a corporal. S.C.H.&G., III, 83; N.A.855. Dean, Elias He enlisted in the Second Regiment on 4 November 1775 under Capt. Bernard Elliott. On 24 July 1776, he enlisted in the Third Regiment as a sergeant. C.He was in a North Carolina unit under Col.Caswell and was in the battle at Moore's Creek. After moving to Darlington District, he enlisted on 14June 1778 (28 December 1778) in the Fifth Regiment under Capt. James Conyers. He was at the siege of Savannah. When the Fifth Regiment was reformed during 1780 into the First and Second Regiments, Dean became a member of the Second Regiment under Capt. Dunbar and Col. Marion. He was taken prisoner at the fall of Charleston. In a group of about thirty men, he waded and swam to freedom. About 1 June 1781, he entered a North Carolina unit under Capt. John Bryant.
