    1. William Dean of SC
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. Dear Bill, I read with interest your message to Linda Laminack <gabby@etinternet.com> You stated: "I think I have found my Shadrick. In a round about way, I have recently been in contact with a person in Monks Courner, SC who's father gave her a book on the history of her Dean family and they go back to the same Shadrick or Shadrack ( wish people could spell the same way all the time) Deen and a Mourning." I have prove back to a William Dean (b. 11/2/1765 Edgefield SC, m.1. Rebecca Withers b. 1760 Charleston SC d/o William Withers and Rebecca Hartley of Charleston, SC, 2. Sarah (Sallie) Adams (d. 1829)[Fam ?], 9/12/1828, d. 7/14/1830 Edgefield SC) [Dean Cem Edgefield SC, Edge Note, AWEC,p. 321) I have wondered if William also came from the low country area and met Rebecca Withers there, or just as a result of serving in the Battle of Charleston. Below is a brief outline of my first Dean and his children plus the notes I have on him. Does any of this seem to fit into your line? Looking forward to hearing from you and others who are SC Deans. Notes on William Dean: Marriages and Deaths - Edgefield Advertiser - pg 136 "William Dean Sr died , 7/14/1830 in his 64th year (conclusion b+ ca 1766), Abstract Wills of Edgefield Co, KC Archives - pg 321 - William Dean , Sr, probated 9/13/1830 - wife Sally (2nd wife and not the mother of the children] , sons - Robinson, Thomas, William, Brian, Simeon, Daughters - Margaret Holloway, G-son Robert M. Smith Found a William Dean b 1766, SC d 7/14/1830 SC m Sally [REV-Pvt., SC] Vol 1 p. 801-804 [DAR Patriot Index] He served in the militia after the fall of Charleston. Patriot Index Supplement; Audited Accounts in SC ARchives 1865; Stub# S439; U301 Also found information in "Roster of SC Patriots in the American Revolution" by Gilmer Moss, pg. 245 listing wife as Rebecca Hartley Withers. Rebecca is first wife and mother of all of the children. According to the names listed in his will, his sons Thomas and Bryan signed their names Deen. Have seen the spelling both ways, sometimes in the same document as in this will. 1779 Ninety Six Dsitrict Census US Genweb compiled by Paul Sarrett, Jr <prsjr@aol.com> Does not list a William Dean. Where were he and Rebecca at this time?? Their first son was born October 10, 1789. Of the Deans listed, was one of them his father? George Dean; Thomas Dean; Richard Dean; Thomas Dean?? 1820 Edgefield Co Census gives two William Deans, both with men over 45. p. 104 1 male 18-26; 1 m 45+; 1 f 16-26. (Possible Wm., Sr. and other family) p. 126 1 m 18-26; 1 m 45+; 1 f < 10; 1 f 16-26; 1 f 45+ (possible Wm. Jr.) Since Rebecca Withers might already have died and he did not remarry until 1828, he could be the older male in the household with a son or daughter on page 104. Dau Margaret would fit this female; as would several sons. Or he and Rebecca might be head of HH in p. 126. However with the female under 10 it is more likely that this hh is the hh of William Jr. as their daughter Emily was born in 1917. Next child born in 1820 not recorded. Notes on Rebecca Hartley Withers: "Roster of SC Patriots in the American Revolution" by Bobby Gilmer Ross lists Rebecca Hartley Withers as Williams wife. She was the mother of all the children, as he married Sarah Adams ca 1828 at age 62. On May 20, 1999, I found the Ancestral file of Rebecca Withers family on the LDS online site. I entered data as submitted. I have not researched this line myself. The submitter listed as the source of the information given was: Don H. Downey 245 N. Vine St. #704 Salt Lake City, UT 84103. [AF92-100074] Letter written to this person and address came back unknown.
