I want to thank all who responded to my query regarding Luther Dean and Margaret Strawbridge - alas - alas it aint my line. Too bad becuase Margaret Strawbridge had some FANTASTIC Scottish heritage going back to the Stewarts/Campbells. anyway !! I am looking for Harriet Dana - who might be a Deane say but for a flourish of the clerks hand. who knows. She married John Gilbert of Walpole and Sharon in 1816 at Walpole. Harriet b. 1796/7 was of Foxboro,Mass. where strangely offspring of Luther Dean resided. There was a Rev. Francis Dane who was a minister alos floating about - he would have been a contemporary of Harriet.
I am seeking information on Daniel DEAN, b. June 28, 1739, place unknown. He married Elizabeth PEASE, dau. of Daniel Pease and Hannah JONES on April 15, 1768 at Galway, Saratoga Co., NY. This was probably Albany Co. in 1768 as Saratoga Co. wasn't organized until later. Daniel and Elizabeth lived in Galway until about 1804 when they moved to Onondaga Co. where he died Sept. 5, 1821 and she died March 25, 1825. All of their children were born at Galway: Betsy, Ellis, Daniel, William, William M., Josiah, Chloe, Jirah, Polly, Thomas, and Samuel H. After moving to Onondaga Co., William M. and Thomas eventually lived in Chautauqua Co. Please e-mail responses to BDean70020@aol.com

Hi, John-- I'm interested in DEANs in Taunton, too. I've never been able to discover the parents of my Nathaniel Dean, born 4-29-1754, died 12-19-1822 in Taunton. He married Elizabeth COBB and raised several children in the area. I don't suppose you know the names of your Luther's siblings? I think these might be the children of your Luther and wife Margaret Strawbridge, from the Taunton VRs, Births: "David, ch. Luther and Peggy, June 25, 1787" (p. 124) "Luther, ch. Looking for parentage of my ggg grandfather Horace Deane shown below. HORACE R., son of ?, b. 1802 (acc. to death record) or 1811 at VT; m. to Carrie Scribner (NH Vital Records)or to Clarissa Mason (Ellen's obit.). His parentage is at present. A Horace C. Dean is shown in the 1850 Census for Winnhall, Bennington Co., VT, but because of his age cannot be Horace R.'s father. Horace reappears in Walpole in the 1840 Census and then in the 1860 Census in Charlestown, NH. Another man, a Horace Deen (alias Horace C. Dean) is listed in 1850 in Claremont, but he is older with a different wife and children. Ellen's father, Horace R. Deane died at Claremont on 10 DEC 1884 at age 82, a farmer, of prostration. The 1850 Census shows his wife as Clarissa, b. about 1811 in NH. In the original proprietor's records of Claremont, a reference is made to posting a notice for a meeting of the town proprietors. The records mention posting a copy of this notice at the tavern of Horace Dean, in Claremont, on 15 NOV 1845. The other Horace Dean had a prominent farm in town, so that it is possible that the tavern belonged to my Horace. Children Ellen Maria, b. 1842 at Walpole, NH, m. John7 Eugene Lovejoy on 5 SEP 1857 at Claremont, NH; d. 30 SEP 1914 of cerebral hemorrhage at Claremont; buried at Pleasant Street Cemtery, Claremont with husband. Claremont Vital Records show that Ellen died at Claremont, a prior resident of Walpole, at age 75, and that she was bom in Walpole. She was a resident of Claremont at the time of her death, a widow and retired. She was buried on 4 OCT 1914. An ad appears in the 1896-97 City Directory for Claremont , showing her ownership of a boarding house in West Claremont. TheNational Eagle of Claremont printed the following obituary for Ellen on 2 OCT 1914. John, b. 1849 at Walpole, NH. George, b. between 1849-50 at Charlestown, NH. (The 1850 Census includes the following people living with Horace and his family) George Howard, b. 1823 in NH, famer. Harriet Howard, b. 1831 in NH, famer, perhaps a daughter of Horace. Martha J. Howard, b. in Hubbard, Vt. Any assistance will be appreciated. Jerry Lovejoy bennabre@ici.net http://home.ici.net/~bennabre/bennabre.html
Hi Debby, My DEAN ancestors were in Ontario, Canada in the 1820 time frame. When I was trying to sort my DEAN ancestors from all the other DEAN families of that time and place, I collected some information on the Rev. Horace Dean. For a while I thought there was a possibility that he was among my ancestors, but it turned out that he definitely was not. At the Kitchener Public Library (Waterloo County, Ontario) last summer I found a few pages of genealogy on the Rev. Horace Dean. They show his parents as Perez Dean and ??? Stafford, daughter of Abel Stafford. Perez and his wife moved from New York State in 1799. In 1821 Perez was in Clinton Twp., Lincoln County, Ontario. According to this sheet "they had at least three sons and one daughter: Horace b. 6 Jan 1799 at Owego, NY (USA), d. 11 Nov 1866 Thornhill, Ontario Amanda b. 1806 Lincoln Co., Ontario, d. 1889 Grimsby, Ontario Miel b. 1809 Lincoln Co., Ontario, d. 1887 Simcoe (Co./town?), Ontario Stafford b. 1811 Lincoln Co., Ontario, d. ?? There is some more information on the marriages and descendants of these four children on this sheet. In this file in the Kitchener Library was also a five-generation pedigree chart for Ephraim William DEAN, son of the Rev. Horace DEAN. According to that chart, Horace's father was Perez III, HIS father was Perez, Jr., and HIS father was (naturally) Perez. This chart gives Stamford, VT as the birthplace of Perez III. It gives the names of both Perez III's parents and all four of his grandparents. The Rev. Horace Dean married Ruth Tisdale. There is a lot of information on her family and a little on the Rev. Horace in two books on the Tisdale family: 1) "The Descendants of John Tisdale (1614-1675) of Colonial Massachusetts" and 2) "Meet the Tisdales." Both of these books are in the Salt Lake City Family History Library. Hope this helps. Larry Dean Vancouver, WA, USA LOIS CONN wrote: > Sarah Dean Married Levi Warren about 1820 in Canada. First please let me apologize for the length of this article. BUT I think it will help everyone who is looking for lost Kansas Relatives. >From the Salina Journal, Salina, KS HISTORICAL RECORDS Acquisition furthers archives mission. State historical society/s holdings include records dating from 1850 to 1996. By DAVID CLOUSTON A new acquisition of microfilm of Kansas governmental records from courthouses across the state, including central and western Kansas counties, is expected to be a trove of information for genealogists. The records from marriages licenses and cemetery records, to drivers licenses and naturalization records, acquired by the Kansas State Historical Society research center in Topeka span the preterritorial period from 1850 all the way to 1996. The microfilm is available for use at the society' research center or may be borrowed via inter-library loan through libraries in Kansas and nationwide. The purchase of the records was funded by a $33,053 grant from the Kansas Library Network Board. The grant paid for the records to be copied so that a duplicate exists if the original document ever is destroyed accidentally or deteriorates, said Christine Desmuke, government documents librarian at the societys research center. Each year the society collects several hundred rolls of microfilm of government records. We have also received records for when county courthouses, for one reason or another, don t want their records anymore, Desmuke said. We also have a local records program to assist county officers in deciding which records to keep and the best way to keep them. The Society has been collection genealogical research materials since the 1870s and today possesses more that 5,000 family histories, 3,750 volumes of printed genealogical records, more than 3,000 rolls of Kansas local government records microfilm and countless other sources. The well-thumbed records maintained by the society are used widely. During the last fiscal year, some 5,000 researchers visited the societys research center on the west edge of Topeka. Center officials also answered questions posed by between 7,000 and 8,000 letters, e-mails and phone calls. The society constantly is looking to add to its research holdings. The center soon will acquire a microfilmed set of business records of the early fur trade in Kansas, from the St. Louis Historical Society. Several years ago it received a microfilmed collection of books and pamphlets about the Civil War. The center also maintains a thorough microfilm archive of newspapers dating back to 1854. NEW RECORDS AVAILABLE FOR GENEALOGISTS AT THE KANSAS STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY RESEARCH CENTER ARE: Council Grove: cemetery records (1850-1996) Decatur County: motor vehicle licenses (1925 1929) Ford County: probate, marriages and naturalization records (1872 1900) Johnson County: index to marriages (1857 1989), school truancy records (1904 1928), poor house records (1885 1901 & 1910 1946) and probate records (1857 1989) Logan County: marriage records (1887 1889), probate records (1887 1951), and naturalization records (1887 1950) McPherson County: school census and other school records (1870 1954) Miami County: marriage records (1857 1867 & 1911 1945) Republic County: birth, death and marriage records (1894 1911) Saline County: marriage records (1870 1992) Sedgwick County: marriage records (1870 1984) Washington County: naturalization records (1879 1941), record of wills (1883 1920), and probate records (1888 1930 & 1939 1950). For information about these or other materials in the historical society collections, call (785) 272-8681, ext. 117. Or write the reference section, Kansas State Historical Society, 6425 S. W. Hi all, I am new to this list having just joined today. My name is Rich Dean of Butler NJ where our family has lived since 1910. Prior to that they were in Boonton NJ after coming to America from Ireland during the potato famine and then they were in Montville NJ for a short time. We really don't know much about our Dean heritage. My great-grandfather, William Dean Sr., died in 1926 but my grandfather, William Dean Jr., lived to age 87 in 1982. The family had cousins in either Rhode Island or Massachusetts by the name of Dean but there has not be any contact in at least 50 years. I have not been actively involved in geanology, but I do have a growing interest. Several weeks ago I found a web site by a lady in Kansas tracing her roots to our great-great-grandfathers who were born 5 miles from my home and to one ancestor who arrived in Boston in the late 1620's from England; that family name is Holloway. On my mother's side, another ancestor (Matthews) received a large land grant of quite a few thousand acres from one of the King George's in present day Monmouth County NJ. I am working on the DEANs in Floyd Co. Kentucky 1820 census... Thanks, Patty
I'm researching William Bradford DEAN (b. 1-14-1820 Frankfurt, Waldo Co. ME) who went to Prince Edward Island, Canada, by 1850, and served as US Consul. He married a local girl, Mary Ann LORD (b. 11-22-1830, PEI), and raised a family there. He eventually returned to the U.S., lived in Massachusetts and finally the Los Angeles area of California. Their daughter Annie Lydia Dean is my great-grandmother. This DEAN line originated in Taunton/Dighton in Massachusetts, with Nathaniel Dean born 4-29-1754 and wife Elizabeth Cobb. I have not been able to discover the ancestors of Nathaniel Dean. I'd be interested in hearing from others working on this family. Andrea Crowell ACrowell@email.msn.com also: 75330.517@compuserve.com
