    3. Dear Bill, I read with interest your message to Linda Laminack <gabby@etinternet.com> You stated: "I think I have found my Shadrick. In a round about way, I have recently been in contact with a person in Monks Courner, SC who's father gave her a book on the history of her Dean family and they go back to the same Shadrick or Shadrack ( wish people could spell the same way all the time) Deen and a Mourning." Patriot Index Supplement; Audited Accounts in SC ARchives 1865; Stub# S439; U301 Also found information in "Roster of SC Patriots in the American Revolution" by Gilmer Moss, pg. 245 listing wife as Rebecca Hartley Withers. Rebecca is first wife and mother of all of the children. According to the names listed in his will, his sons Thomas and Bryan signed their names Deen. Have seen the spelling both ways, sometimes in the same document as in this will. 1779 Ninety Six Dsitrict Census US Genweb compiled by Paul Sarrett, Jr <prsjr@aol.com> Does not list a William Dean. Where were he and Rebecca at this time?? Their first son was born October 10, 1789. Of the Deans listed, was one of them his father? George Dean; Thomas Dean; Richard Dean; Thomas Dean?? 1820 Edgefield Co Census gives two William Deans, both with men over 45. p. 104 1 male 18-26; 1 m 45+; 1 f 16-26. (Possible Wm., Sr. and other family) p. 126 1 m 18-26; 1 m 45+; 1 f < 10; 1 f 16-26; 1 f 45+ (possible Wm. Jr.) Since Rebecca Withers might already have died and he did not remarry until 1828, he could be the older male in the household with a son or daughter on page 104. Dau Margaret would fit this female; as would several sons. Or he and Rebecca might be head of HH in p. 126. However with the female under 10 it is more likely that this hh is the hh of William Jr. as their daughter Emily was born in 1917. Next child born in 1820 not recorded. Notes on Rebecca Hartley Withers: "Roster of SC Patriots in the American Revolution" by Bobby Gilmer Ross lists Rebecca Hartley Withers as Williams wife. She was the mother of all the children, as he married Sarah Adams ca 1828 at age 62. On May 20, 1999, I found the Ancestral file of Rebecca Withers family on the LDS online site. I entered data as submitted. I have not researched this line myself. The submitter listed as the source of the information given was: Don H. Downey 245 N. Vine St. #704 Salt Lake City, UT 84103. [AF92-100074] Letter written to this person and address came back unknown.

Glad you finally found her. I think I have found my Shadrick. In a round about way, I have recently been in contact with a person in Monks Courner, SC whos father gave her a book on the history of her Dean family and they go back to the same Shadrick or Shadrack ( wish people could spell the same way all the time) Deen and a Mourning. According to what they have Shadrack and family was attacked by Indians and left for dead and thrown in a ditch. Another party came by and nursed him back to health. He was taken back to Ireland, married, and returned to the United States and spent the rest of his life in America. Anyway he settled in Jackson Co. GA were I found him. He owned land in three counties. The placed where he lived, I believe is in now Gwinnett County and the property he owned in Elbert is now a part of Madison County. They trace their family through his son Shadrack, Jr to a James Deen (3 wives and 20 children) He was born in! KY and his decendants moved across the river in IN and IL. and changed the spelling to Dean. Their dates are a little to early for me.... We'll have to see..... Is there a chance our famillies could now connect with the new people you found? I have collected over the years 20+ family trees files on the Deen/Dean connections and many are on computer files. There is a good chance I can now connect you with someone who is working on the same family. If you like, I would be glad to swap files with you. My file currently has 3,400 names connected. I have Deen/Deans in GA, AL,MS, TN, KY, IN,IL, and TX. I can send and receive a GEDCOM file. My Family Tree Maker file is tooooo large to send by E-Mail. If you want to swap, send me your file and I send mine. I can also look through the other files I have. (trying to put them is some sence of order). Good to hear from you again......... 3. The White Rose Cemetery has not always been known by "White Rose". Since it had its beginning in the days when what we now know as Wills Point, was in fact considered a part of the Canton area. Inhabitants of the Wills Point area were listed on the 1860 census with a Canton Post Office. Families were few and far between during those days. William Wills and his family left Tennessee in 1849 and settled in Kaufman County. They were listed on the 1850 Census in Kaufman County. Shortly after 1850, they purchased a log cabin from Mr. Sullivan and settled in Van Zandt County on the "Old Dallas-Shreveport Road." The log cabin was the home of the Wills family for the first few years they lived in Van Zandt County. The log cabin has been moved to 335 E. N. Commerce and is kept in repair by the Business and Professiona (sic) Women's Club of Wills Point. According to folklore, the Wills family bought and sold supplies to travelers, and because of the family name and shape of the land where the cabin was located, their place became known as Wills' Point or Wills' Stand. This was a short distance east of what was later to become the town of Wills Point. On September 28, 1864, the elder William Wills died and was laid to rest on the Wills' land a short distance from the homeplace. Mr. Wills was 60 years one month and 18 days old at the time of his death. Mary ann Phillips Wills, widow of William Wills, never remarried. She remained on the homeplace and apparently was very active up to the time of her death just two days before her 82nd birthday. She was laid to rest beside her husband on June 6, 1892 - nearly 28 years after his death. Eight acres of the Wills' land had been set aside for a Graveyard. Mrs. Wills laid out the land by blocks and lots. The family lots were laid out with enough space for twelve burials. They are approximately 20 x 25 feet per lot. She left space for a walkway between each lot. The number of lots per block varies. Roadways divide the blocks. In the old part of the cemetery any lot can be reached without crossing over another person's gravesite. Mrs. Wills evidently put much thought and consideration into her planning. The eight acres that was referred to as the "First Cemetery" had a wide fifty foot roadway crossing near the center. The entrance to the first cemetery was on the west side between what we know now as blocks 8 and 9. The Wills' Burying Place consists of fourt family lots and is enclosed with an iron fence. It is on the south side of Block 1. After Mrs. Wills laid out the cemetery, she began selling lots to others in need of a burying place. This was continued until 1886. On March 27, 1886, this "First Cemetery" was deeded to trustees for the "The Wills Point Cemetery." The Wills' Burying Place and all lots theretofore sold, were excluded from this dale; therefore, any lot with a burial prior to March 1886 has never been a part of "The Wills Point Cemetery" or the White Rose Cemetery" as it was later called. (Transcriber's note: Our sincere appreciation is extended to Ruth McGee and Lavona Blackwell for permission to transcribe Van Zandt County Texas Cemeteries Books 3 and 4. This includes White Rose Cemetery as well as many more. Without the use of these books this work could not have been accomplished within this time frame. 1. DEAN & JERRAULD?? early 1800s, SC? GA?
    2. Yesterday I sent a message to the list regarding my SALINA ROXANNA DEAN b.1819 SC? GA?, who married JAMES CARTER 1836, Hardeman Co. TN. I should have mentioned that there is possibly a connection to the surname JERRAULD (spelling?), perhaps even Salina's mother's maiden name. This name JERRAULD appears on a handwritten family tree chart from about the 1930s. It does not give the names of Salina's parents, but rather indicates that her father was _______ DEAN, and then a line is drawn from that which says "JERRAULD." Would love to hear from anyone about a possible DEAN--JERRAULD connection. S.M. Hitt hitt@flash.net or nannyhitt@yahoo.com
