Does anyone have a Merrrick Dean on their line? I have 3, Merrick Benton Dean was my great grandfather, his father was Merrick Benton S. Dean who was the son of Merrick S. P. Dean. I have info on all of them that I'll gladly share.

I just joined the Dean list, and want to ask if anyone has any information about John S. Dean, born abt 1860 in Red House, Putnam County, West Virginia. He is my great-grandfather. I know very little about him. In 1891 he married Eliza Jarrett and they had ten children before his death on June 28th, 1904 in a coal mining accident in Red Ash Mine, Fayette County, West Virginia. Other than that, the only trace of him I've been able to find is his listing on the 1900 census in Fayette County, West Virginia. If anyone knows anything about him, please contact me. I am hoping to find someone researching this Dean family that help lead to locating John's parents. According to the 1850 Indiana Jefferson County (Smyrna Twp) records, John is listed as follows: Dean, John 70 Farmer NY Mary 57 England A.C. 28 Farmer NY Mary A. 15 Ohio Argus Shipley 33 NY Alice 10 NY? Camelia ? 3 IN John died 31 Aug 1865 and is buried in the Smyrna Church Cemetery. His wife Mary Ann was born 6 Jun 1793 in England and died 5 Jan 1865 and is buried same place as her husband John. The Argus Shipley is shown in several 1850 Census indexes are Argirs? Now, also buried in Smyrna Cemetery is an Agnes Dean Shipley, w/o J.W., b. NY d. 23 Feb. 1848 age 72 years. I wonder if she was John's sister? The son A.C. Dean could be Archibald C. Dean, b. 4 Dec. 1822 and died 1 Apr. 1891. The daughter Mary A. Dean, married John Ritchie and they are shown on the 1860 Census in Smyrna . John and wife Mary died in 1865; however, I have been unable to locate them on the 1865 Census. They must have been on their way to Indiana and Mary was pregnant with daughter Mary and gave birth in OH. I'm just guessing. Seems to be a large age gap between A.C. and Mary. I suppose there were other children that were grown with their own families in 1850 and I guess haven't made the connection yet. Has anyone out there heard of this Dean family? I have a Jessie Claud Moore b. November 10, 1879, living with Nancy Ann (Slavens) and James Thomas Dean according to my great-grandmother's family Bible, (Carrie Ellen b. July 29, 1873., Indiana, d. Oct. 28, 1935, Iowa). Does anyone know of a connection with them? They would have been living in Viola Center Township (Audubon Co.) Iowa, which is south west of Coon Rapids (Carroll Co.) Iowa when Carrie Ellen wrote her family in her Bible. James Thomas Dean was born in Kentucky and Nancy Ann Slavens was born in North Salem, Hendricks Co., Indiana. Some time ago pneumonia developed which greately weakened his condition. The deceased came from one of the pioneer families of the county. Mr. Dean was married to Miss Mary Spencer in 1858, only last August celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. She with eight sons survive, this being the first death in the family. The sons are James Riley Dean of Springfield, H.C., John W., Thomas A., Attorney Frank H. Dean, Walter L. Dean, and Joseph A. Dean, of the firm Johnson & Dean of this city. Mr. Dean himself was the last of his parents family. His two brothers John and David having preceded him in death many years. When 18 years of age, Mr. Dean united with the Associate Reformed, now The First United Presbyterian congregation in Xenia. The funeral was held Tuesday from the late home.
