Do you know anything about this Richard other than the listing on the Roster of Patriots at Moore's Creek Bridge? I have a Richard Dean who showed up in Laurens Co. GA sometime before 1784. According to family tradition he was a veteran of the Revolutionary War, but so far we have not identified him. Our line bought and sold land in GA before eventually moving to Dale Co. AL. Any connections? Margaret Lindsey Smith, mlsmith67@earthlink.net

    1. DEANS OF EARLY SC and their possible connections.
    2. Lee and Billie Jones
    3. I am working on the family of William Dean of Edgefield Co, Sc. There seems to be two of them in the early census data. One with a wife Ruth and one with a wife Nancy according to deeds. I believe that the William who m Nancy was first married to Rebecca Harley Withers per information in Roster of SC Patriots in the American Revolution by Bobby Gilmer Moss, (Limestone College, Baltimore Genealogical Publishing co, Inc, 1983), p. 245. I am interested in finding out the death date of Rebecca Withers Dean and the marriage date to Nancy (possibly Stephens first married to a Bryan or Bryant). From other researchers I have quite a lot of information on the Deans who came to SC and some of the ancestors of the line that contains William m Ruth back to a Richard Dean 26422 [1698](b. England, m. Sarah 26423 (d. 1751 Henrico VA), d. 1748 Henrico VA) and his son Edward Dean 26420 (b. 1718 Henrico VA, m. Rebecca Abney 26421 (b. 1720 Henrico VA)[d/o Unity & George Abney], d. 1761 Halifax VA)) I have no proof that William is connected to this line, or to an early Samuel Dean m Dunkin who had a son William. I would love to correspond with anyone working on these lines. Below are some notes that I have gather on early Deans from internet and library sources. hope this helps someone. Looking forward to hearing from fellow Dean researcher who connect to the SC folks. Billie Jones Colonial Fam. of America, Vol 2 (Ancestry.com) found the following reference: A Wm. Roberts of "Deans Adventure" and "Roberts Range", planter if Kent Co., Md. - will probated 1/27/1772 m Elizabeth Dean d 12/16/1731. Buried at St. Pauls Church,Kent Co., Md. She was the d/o William and Elizabeth Dean of Kent Co., Md. I have no proof of any earlier relationship to William Dean, although I have information on Deans from several sources. Excerpt from Early New England People, 1882 "The name of Den. of Dene, which is the ancient way of spelling what is now written Deane, makes its appearance in England soon after the introduction of surnames. It was apparently derived from the Saxon word den, or dene, a valley. In the reign of Elizabeth I, the letter "a" was introduced into the name Denne, which becomes Deane. There are in England four distinct families of Deanes, from which all others are offshoots. The first person of record was Robert de Den,or de Dene, who was butler or server of Edward the Confessor. He held estates in England and Normandy." DRaffe3066@aol.com (DAVE) My information is that some researchers start the US line with a William Henry Dean and wife Elizabeth Dampier of Dorset , England, but it is not definite. I have a print out of many Dorset Deans of the period, sent by a British list source, but don't locate these people. There is also a previous generation in England mentioned as a possiblitiy, William Gilbert Dean and Alice Talbot. Henry Dean was the son of William Dean, d. 1699 Dorchester Co, MD, a shipbuilder supposedly out of Dorset, England. m. Elizabeth (Meredith?). Their children were : Elizabeth, William, Richard, John, Henry, Sarah and Mary. Thomas Dean was the son of Henry Dean, d. 1746. Dorchester Cty, Maryland, a blacksmith; m. Elizabeth Summers, d/o Thomas and Elizabeth Summers, d.1763. Dorchester, cty. MD. Children: John, Henry, Thomas, Mary. Henry Dean , Sr. was the son of Thomas Dean, b. ca. 1730, Dorchester Co, MD; d.1812, Mercer Co.Ky.; m. cir. 1753, in MD,Elizabeth Shenton, dau of Raymond and Mary (Critchett?) Shenton, Parents of : Raymond, Henry, Thomas, Sophia, Leven, Nathan, Summers, Mary, and Elizabeth "Betsy". Thomas then married Dianna (possibly Reeder) and had children: John, Keziah, Job, Ann, Milly, and Rebecca. There was a long court battle between the two descendant families after the deaths of the parents. The other Deans I know about were Descended from Henry, Jr , mentioned above, who was an early settler of Breckinridge Co., KY. There is another prominent Dean family that settled in Taunton, Mass, I believe, from Taunton, Eng and was active on the list sometime ago. There are a couple of references "Genealogy of the Dean family" Indianapolis, published by John Candee Dean, 1918, and pamphlet, "Brief Memoirs of John and Walter Dean", Coolidge and Wiley, Boston, 1849. Early SC Deans were found in the Index to Commissioners of Locations , Plat Books A & B (1784-1788), Lower Part of Old 96th Dist (which included the Edgefield Co area), compiled by R. 3. Greetings Dean Listers, This isn't my maiden post for this web; may it serve as a reacquaintencing.... so HELLO! I am probably one of your typical American Scottish descendants of grievously mixed ancestry, a veritable mutt with family ties to Deans, Duffs, Brands, Morrises, Jacksons, Barrows, Johnsons, and Newells amongst others... so... Davidsons, McDuffs, Camerons, Gordons, Buchannans, et al... I therefore: CLAIM YOU ALL!!! For I am the MC-SCOT!!!!! (thousands have served in my creation)... ok ok...I ramble, what would you expect from one who has chosen a Draconic chat handle. like LeDragon ... who fancies his alter ego as that of a titanic mythical creature of imposing presence and above average prescience... one whose stature rivals legend... whose powerful countenance is evidenced by his mighty span of wings, his awesome crown of horns, razor sharp claws that rival the dentia of his magnificent smile, which is, all too often, overshadowed by his fiery nature and disposition. Whose Imperious Stature is second to his infinitive ego..... ah well I digress... on to what we came here for.... ............................................................................ ...... I am seeking the roots of my ggrandfather... Rev. John Duff Dean b. May 5, 1851 in Monfieth, Angus, Scotland. the son of George Dean of Dundee (no other information is known) JDD migrated to America in 1867, at the age of 16, in the company of his uncle, John Duff, a Queensware merchant, with whom he worked with for a time before attending Cumberland University from which he graduated in 1877 and hence entered the ministry of the Presbyterian Church. Serving for a time in the Nashville area until he was called to serve three churches in the Aliceville, Alabama area, where he died on Feb 15, 1905. unfortunately the only tangible accounting we have is above, excerpted from the Memorial of his Death and Funeral. He married twice and sired nine children ... his first wife and three of their children died in an epidemic in 1882 and another child by his second wife, died within three months of his birth. my grandfather and his 4 sisters lived long lives with the last sister passing in 1980. sooooooooo... if any out there have even the slightest knowledge of this lineage, or such guidance as you might offer, KNOW THAT, the sharing of it is greatly appreciated in advance... Sincerely, dave morris, sr (your friendly neighborhood Heinz 57 Scottish Dragon....)

    1. DEAN
    2. Brian Dean
    3. I have just subscribed to this list and hope that other DEAN's can help me get through a brick wall. My grandfather birth was registered in Thame, Brill, in the county of Oxford, on 23rd. July 1852 and his father was Stephen Shirley DEAN and his mother was Susan, formerly RADBONE and they were living in Ichfield at the time of the birth registration, none of which makes too much sense to me. I have looked everywhere for information on their marriage and family but to no avail. Hope someone can help me. I have some information on DEAN's in the London area and will be pleased to share with anyone. Brian Dean, Sorrento,BC. 1. The Dean Picnic - 1880- Xenia, Ohio- Greene County
    2. THE XENIA GAZETTE FRIDAY - AUGUST 20, 1880 XENIA, OHIO GREENE COUNTY SURNAMES: DEAN, STEELE, MOORE, CAMPBELL, BICKETT, PERRY, HOPPING THE DEAN PICNIC The DEAN picnic held on Friday last in the beautiful grove of Mr. D.S. DEAN, adjoining the DEAN Cemetery, was a splendid affair. The weather was highly favorable and a goodly number of the DEAN connection with their friends were present to enjoy the occasion. This connection has now become quite numerous, though the older members of the family have all passed away with a solitary exception: Mr. Joseph DEAN alone remains. Though now well in his seventy-sixth year, possesses much of the uprishliness of youth. He and his wife have already pursued lifes journey together for nearly 54 years, and are seemenly good for many years to come. Daniel DEAN, the great proginta of the DEAN family was a native of Ireland, and emigrated to this country about the year 1748 when about 19 years of age. He found his way to Bath County, Ky., and soon established himself in business, being engaged in farming and milling. Having become well established in business he wooed and won Miss Jennet STEELE, with whom he was united in marriage about the year 1790. In 1812 having purchased a tract of 1800 acres of land on the waters of Caesars Creek, he emigrated to Greene County. He subsequently added to his former purchase so that he was able to settle his family around him. At this time, or shortly afterwards, his family consisted of himself, wife, mother, and 11 children from whence has sprung the numerous DEAN connection. In memory the writer of this is carried back some 40 years when his numerous family were comfortably settled around the old homestead occupying farms of their own. Of the DEANS there were Robert, William, James, Daniel, and Joseph. Of the daughters; Mrs. James MOORE, Mrs. Hugh CAMPBELL, Mrs. James CAMPBELL, Mrs. John BICKETT, Mrs. Walter PERRY, and Mrs. James HOPPING. Mr. DEAN at the time alluded to is remembered as a sprightly old man; and rather communicative, many personal reminiscences might be related. I will only mention one for the benefit of that much abused class of persons, mothers-in-law. Mr. DEANS mother and sister soon followed him to this country, and became his house keepers. As a good condition to the agreement of his marriage, his father-in-law required him to build a separate house for his mother and sister, which condition was completed with, but the house was never occupied. His mother, whose maided name was Mary CAMPBELL, was born about the year 1740, and continued to dwell under his roof till the day of her death in August 1826. Much has been said in praise of this mother and it cannot be doubted that much of Mr. DEANS success in life was due to his mother. She now sleeps in DEAN Cemetery and it was proposed to erect over her remains on the occassion of the late picnic, a fine granite monument to her memory. Unfortunately the necessary arrangements could not be made in time, but will be sometime in the near future. The DEAN Cemetery occupies an elevated piece of ground and contains three-fourths of an acre of land. It is surrounded by a heavy stone wall laid in mortar and apparentaly of a durability to last hundreds of years. There is but a single entrance through an iron gate. May the DEAN picnic be continued. Debbie(I have no connection with the family) I found this article and thought it might help someone on the list ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! 1. Joseph DEAN & Sophie FAY 1800 OH>MI
    2. Jim Shreve Sr.
    3. Morning all, As part of my project to find all the descendents of Benejah FAY, I'm looking for descendents of the couple above. Unfortunately I know very little of the couple, and very little is verified. I would appreciate any help you could offer. Here is what I know. Sophie FAY was born on May 17, 1800, in New York. Some sources give her state of birth as Massachusetts, but all evidence I have seen points to New York. In 1816, she and her family was the first settlers in what would be known as Parma, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. She married Joseph DEAN on March 18, 1818 in Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Her marriage was confirmed by a look at the marriage index here in Cuyahoga County. Apparently the couple removed to Michigan, I suspect following other family members who removed there. From an email I received from another FAY cousin, Sophie FAY DEAN died and was buried in Michigan, but she did not know or have a date or location for her. I've not been able to find the Michigan census here locally as of yet, so I do not have any birthdates or birth place for Joseph DEAN. At the moment I also do not know when the couple removed to Michigan. As I mentioned already some of Sophie FAY DEAN's siblings also removed to Michigan. One of her sisters is buried in Troy, Michigan. If you can tie into this couple, I do have the lines of her parents back to the immigrants, which i can freely share. Thanx in advance, Jim SHREVE Sr.

    1. John Dean b. Feb 23, 1781
    2. Just thought I'd post again just incase there are any new "listers" who might offer a CLUE! Looking for the birthplace (town) and parents of the following: John Dean, b. Feb. 23, 1781 in NY (according to census records). John died in 1865 in Jefferson County, IN. John married Mary Ann. Last name unknown. She was born in England. The only children I know about are: A(rchibald) C. Dean born Dec. 4, 1822 in NY Mary A. Dean born Feb. 23, 1835 in Ohio. Mary married John Ritchie, b. in OH; they married in Jefferson County, IN. It would seem there are quite a few years in between these children, so there must have been others. I would guess that John and Mary Ann married somewhere in NY. Any help with this Dean family would be greatly appreciated! Karen Florida (Getting Hot!) Karen
