After forcing their way through the wire fence enclosing the hospital grounds and bruhing the outlying cordon of guards out of the way, the immigrants headed for the railroad station, three mile distant, and tried to buy tickets for Philadelphia but were refused by the agent who had barricaded himself and held them off with his pistol in his tiny office until assistance arrived from the quaramtine station. The immigrant were disappointed due to the failure of the Italian liner Taormina to be at the Breakwater this morning to carry them to Philadelphia to spend Easter Sunday with family and friends. Officers of the quarantine station had sent a wireless message the night before to the revenue cutter Onondaga, which has left Lewes yesterday afternoon , informing the commander that the immigrants were restless and in an excited state of mind and that he should better return. Upon the cutters return fifty marines with rifles and fixed bayonets turned the scale of the encounter and soon the 200 immigrants were sprinting back to their prison even fasted than they had left it. No one was hurt and the guards and marines kept tempers in check as the sight of the weapons proved effective. Later word was received that the Taormina was on its way this afternoon and be ready in the morning to take the immigrants to Philadelphia but they were still disappointed that they would not be back! in time to spend Easter Sunday with friends and relatives as they cannot possibly be landed in Philadelphi until late Sunday night or Monday morning. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
