Years ago when William Penn owned a considerable part of this end of Delaware, Cape Henlopen was covered with a big pine forest, and it was this timber that Willaim Penn deeded to the town of Lewes, for the poor families, such deed is recorded at Georgetown. Since then all who needed wood were privileged to gather the dead wood and falled trees until the last few years when the privilege has been much abused. This week attention has been called to the fact that trees were being cut and the big saw logs were being carted away for for personal profit and William J. Hickman was arrested for the work. although the case was not proven against him at yesterdays hearing, the fact remains that someone has been cutting the trees all throught the section and with the case of Ernest Lynch, another Lewes man who recently paid a fine for the same abuse of privilege, City Council today concluded to stop all cutting and trespassing on the land until further notice. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
