W. Beckett Article Text: Lewes, Del., Aug 22, 1908: Tardier recognition never came than in the case of Rev. William Beckett, who has waited nearly two hundred years before residents of this section placed a monument over his grave such as he deserved. It was through efforts of the Womens Club of Lewes that the monument was finally erected and placed over the grave today honoring this interpid explorer and missionary. Dr. Beckett was an Englishman who came to Lewes nearly two hundred years ago and established a church and devoted his life and energies as a missionary of the Christian religion. For weeks he would travel among the Indians in this section, preaching to them and bringing many into the church. It was owing to his teachings that the whites who settled at Lewes had very little trouble with the Indians. When Beckett died he was buried in the old St. Peters burying ground in Lewes, where his grave has been unmarked untl today. The inscription on the monument reads: " In grateful memory of Rev. William Beckett, M.A., son of John and Mary Beckett, born in Cheshire, England, April 25, 1697: Entered into rest August 20, 1743. Missionary to Lewes, 1721 to 1743.
