M. At the Ellendale station there is an interlocking signal tower because of the intersection of the Queen Annes Railroad near that point. When one train is approaching on the D.M.& V. and has the rightaway the Queen Annes switches are opened by the automatic arrangement so that no train can pass through and telescope another, but will be derailed. This was the situation which confronted Engineer EWING and the passenger of the D. M. & V. train when they approached the Ellendale junction this morning. In the smoking car of the Lewes train were Secretary of State HUGHES, state Senator FRANKLIN C. MAULL, and Dr. HIRAM R. BURTON, who was today elected a delegate to the Republican National Convention. There were a number of others in this forward car and all saw their peril at o! nce, but almost immediately the train left the track and thundered along on the cross ties and stopped twenty feet from the Queen Annes tracks, just as the morning train on that road thundered by. The passengers were badly jolted but not seriously hurt. The fireman, thinking the trsin could not be stopped, jumped, and went over an embankment, breaking his ankle. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
