The flames started at 7 o'clock in the cottage of Mrs C.A. KING which was quickly destroyed as Rehoboth has no adequate means for fighting fires. All of Rehoboths hundreds of buildiings are built of wood and of the most inflammable material and the King cottage was soon ashes. The TOWNSEND HOTEL, the BRAYTON HOTEL and the cottage of DR. THOMPSON of Lewes who is mayor of the city by the sea were soon in flames. The bucket brigade fought valiantly but soon realized the hopelessnes of the contest and appealed to Wilmington, Georgetown and Lewes for help. The fire spread from the King cottage to the BALTIMORE HOTEL on Railroad Avenue and from this structure to the large cottage of D. C. TOWNSEND. The fine large cottage belonging to DALLAS MARVEL of Laurel, Del., which stands alongside of Townsend cottage a! lso caught fire and was partially destroyed. A special train with engines and fire fighters was run from Georgetown and Lewes and the call to Wilmington for help was withdrawn. Fortunately, the wind shifted, blowing the flames toward the ocean which probably saved the southern and western parts of the city from destruction.
