Aged Negro's Widow is Astonished at the Claim of Another Woman. Article Text: New Castle, Del., Jan. 23.--The body of Reuben ROY, an aged and highly respected colored citizen, whose death occurred several days ago, was claimed by another wife, in addition to the one to whom he was legally married in this city about twelve years ago. The people of the community were astounded to learn that the man had another wife and a daughter, nearing the age of twenty years. They reside at Kirkwood, about twelve miles distant, but had never been heard of by the widow in this city or by any of the most intimate friends of the deceased. The latter, who was a trustee of the Union American Methodist Episcopal Church, had the confidence and esteem of all the people. He was also an honored member of Levi Anderson Lodge, Colored Masons, of this city. When the stranger came here, with her daughter, they went to the home of the deceased and laid claim to the body, and the legal widow sat and listened to the explanation and then quietly asked that the first Mrs. ROY produce her marriage certificate. This she could not do and the local Mrs. ROY produced her certificate of marriage and informed the stranger that she would herself look after all arrangements and collect the insurance money, which she did, and gave to Reuben a respectable funeral. Both women and the daughter followed the body to the grave, but there was no scene as was anticipated at the Union Cemetery. The visitor remained at the ROY home until morning, when they left for their home. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
