Article Text: Seaford, Del., Aug. 27.--A race war, threatened here as the result of negroes mortally wounding a county. Constable Curtis STEEN, while attempting to round up a gang of negro "craps" shooters, was shot by two of the negroes. He cannot recover, physicians say. STEEN was appointed constable recently by Sussex County Court, and this was his first attempt at making an arrest. A gang of seven negroes started a dice game near the Standard Oil Company's tanks. Several of the negroes who live in the grove went to Constable STEEN's home, and informed him of the game. The constable went to the tanks, but before he could arrest the men, two negroes, Henry PETITT and Arch MILLS, drew their revolvers and shot the constable. After shooting him, they jumped on him, stamped him and beat him unmercifully with steel knuckles. One bullet entered STEEN's lung, while two others pierced his thigh. The negroes made their escape down the Cambridge & Seaford Railroad toward the Maryland line. The news of the shooting soon spread over the town, and a posse of 200 armed men were soon on their trail. Chief of Police MARTIN and others routed one of the negroes from a clump of trees. Chief MARTIN fired his double-barreled gun at the fleeing negro but he missed him and the negro escaped. State Detectives HAWKINS and GILLS joined in the hunt. The citizens have threatened to burn out the negro colony, and scores of them are leaving town. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
