At the usual hour the court adjourned for dinner shortly after which a heavy rain commenced, accompanied with thunder and lightning. A great number of people were attending upon business before the court and the suddenness with which the gust came on impelled every one to fly for shelter, and most of the persons not inhabitants of the town went into the court house and occupied the court room above. In a few minutes after, the summit of the Belfrey was struck with lightning which ran down its roof, thence was attracted by the iron of a window shutter belonging to the Balfrey, frmom thence it decended to the roof of the house and was led down a rafter fited with nails till it got within a foot of the eaves where it passed through the roof and took to one of the studs in the front of the house. As the main body decended the stud two other streams flew off to the iron hoops and hinges! of window shutters, then passed to the lower story to the iron in the door and windows, then so passed off to the earth. Unfortunately, it happened many people were sitting in the upper room against the front wall on a bench extending the whole length of the house. DR. WOLFE, of Lewes, who had brought a poor widow to Georgetown on business in the Orphans Court, was sitting directly in the course of the main stream, and was killed instantly. Two others, one on each side of him, were severely burned. Their watch cases were partly melted. Four more persons suffered greatly by the shock and several others, both above and below stairs were stunned and thrown to the floor. The roof, studs, rafters, windows, shutters and the whole broad side of the house were torn and shivered to pieces. Dr. Wolfe has left a widow and two small children. All the other sufferers are in a fair way of recovery. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
