Article Text: Lewes, Del., Aug 28, 1911: The Mayor and Common Council pushed the authority of their office to the limit when a MR. MURDEN, who owns a houseboat which lies on Lewes Beach, refused to clear the beach. Council, by order had it pushed off the beach into the Delaware Bay, where it sank in several feet of water. Mr & Mrs Murden, who were on board the houseboat when the order was carried in effect had to be taken off in a naphtha launch. In June of 1910, Murden was given permission by council to draw his houseboat on the beach for two weeks in order to paint it. Following the loss of their boat, Mr & Mrs Murden spent most of the night under the transportation pier, surrounded by sympathetic people who were attracted to the beach by the unusual proceedings. Later, the houseboat was raised and towed to the life saving station. Counsel has been retained to bring suit against the town, Murden claiming that as Town Council accepted his corporation tax payments he was entitled to remain on the beach. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ DE-Old-News ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NewspaperAbstracts.com - Finding our ancestors in the news!
